BACKGROUND The Yaka people live along the Wamba River. They migrated from Angola during the 16th century and settled under the control of the Kongo Kingdom. In the 18th century their lands were annexed by the Angola-based Lunda people. But by the 19th century the Yaka had regained their independence. Yaka society is tightly structure and headed by a chief of Lunda origin, the Kiamfu, who delegates responsibilities to ministers and lineage chiefs, Unkwagata. Young men are expected to pass through various initiation stages, including circumcision. The tribe lives principally from hunting, although subsidiary farming is undertaken by the women. Prestige objects such as zoomorphic and anthropomorphic neckrests, cups, adzes, combs and terracotta pipes were carved specifically for the chiefs and were kept by them. Slit drums ending in a carved human head were used by diviners. Many figures of various sizes were cherished for their magical abilities. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Belt, earrings, and 3 copper rings(SEE PICTURES) Tool marks can be seen throughout as well as inside and the carvings are very detailed. The carving is the work of a skilled artist! The mask features a woman perched atop a large face. Her arms she holds above her head as if in blessing or celebration. Note the amazing detail in the faces. Body, and adornments of the figures. Both figures feature very unusually shaped noses. In both cases the bridge of the nose resembles that of a bat(see pictures) The color is a rich brown with nice patina. There are various designs carved onto the face mimicking facial tattoos. The bead-work is limited to the various adornments on the figures. A natural handmade rope allows for the mask to be hung. 3 Copper rings are also present as earrings and a nose ring! A very unusual mask! The second picture was taken outdoors with me wearing the mask and the colors are most accurate in that picture! Condition: Good condition with what appears to be 3 missing fingers. This is a circumcision mask.  At the end of the circumcision and initiation rites of young boys, Nkhaanda, this Mbaala mask also known as kholuka, was worn by the elder among the young initiate to celebrate their new status. Mbaala mask is characterized by the superstructure ... moreon the top of the coiffure adorned with bright colors and surmounted by all human and animal figures as well as by scenes of a couple copulating. Mbaala masks depict sexual attributes and display sexual play and procreation. Sexuality and procreation are among the subjects taught to the initiate during their seclusion. Some Mbaala have been seen displaying a penis-like made of wood or other media emphasizing the virility of the new young initiates after their circumcision and meaning that these initiates are ready to get married and have children. They perform to entertain the crowd, but usually, when Mbaala performs everybody is embarrassed. That's one of the rare occasions where sexuality is publicly exposed. For sale is a very old carved and painted African DR Congo Yaka dance mask. It is likely from the late 1800s and has the patina and look of a very old mask. It is in the shape of an animal with an open mouth and pulled back ears. The mask has a handle under the chin which is where the dancer would have held the mask. The face is also characterized by the use of black color highlithing the eyebrows. The lines under the eyes, and the diamond around the mouth. There are two holes under the nose representing the nostrils. The mask has important frame covered with a cotton cloth and hebease of the mask is surrounded with fringes of raffia This mask comes from the Yaka and shows influence from the Suku and the Holo people. The Yaka originate from Angola and were conquered by the Lunda in the late 17th or early 18th century. Their political structure is strongly influenced by the Lunda from whom most of the chiefs Mwata Yaav of Kasongo-Lunda are affiliated. Their religion and culture are closely related to those of the peoples from the northeastern of Angola and the eastern Kongo. They have in common the practice of circumcision rites and initiation of young boys. Nkhaanda(nkhanda, Mukhanda, Mukanda) with these peoples. Their art is rich and well-known in Western because of the masks such as this and also their various figures. They are"avid decorators" as one can see it through this mask and in a wide range of items such as their combs, whistles, pipes, neckrests

Impressive African Yaka Mask - DR Congo- Ceremonial Mask
Impressive African Yaka Ceremonial Mask from DR Congo. These masks were generally used by an important chieftain for initiation or circumcision rites. The masks were typically zoomorphic in nature and were used only once. This is a rather good one with visible color. Cloth hat and raffia surround. The post in the back was used to hold the mask to the face as the chieftain danced around the initiate. Good condition. A slight tear in the top of the discus on the top of the hat but about one of the best I have seen. I will consider any reasonable offer.

Rare old Bena Lulua Mask with headdress. The Lulua(luluwa) people are in fact a collection of small groups whose home bordered by the larger Luba state and the related and. With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. BACKGROUND The Yaka people live along the Wamba River. They migrated from Angola during the 16th century and settled under the control of the Kongo Kingdom. In the 18th century their lands were annexed by the Angola-based Lunda people. But by the 19th century the Yaka had regained their independence. Yaka society is tightly structure and headed by a chief of Lunda origin, the Kiamfu, who delegates responsibilities to ministers and lineage chiefs, Unkwagata. Young men are expected to pass through various initiation stages, including circumcision. The tribe lives principally from hunting, although subsidiary farming is undertaken by the women. Prestige objects such as zoomorphic and anthropomorphic neckrests, cups, adzes, combs and terracotta pipes were carved specifically for the chiefs and were kept by them. Tribal used African Old mask from the Yaka. Congo. Hand carved from a single piece of colorful painted wood. With hangings from raffia fibres. Height: 70 cm including the raffia. The Kwango River area(southwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo) is the home of some 300.000 Yaka people. The men traditionally practiced hunting, while the women cultivated manioc, yams, peas, pineapples and peanuts. The arts of the Yaka are very much alive today. Ceremonial masks and figures are the work of a sculptor who carries out his art well away from the view of other villagers. The Yaka have an initiation, the n-khanda. This was field collected from a Yaka village whilst on a hunt for tribal art last year. This is a later 20th Century mask and in my opinion this mask has not seen a lot of tribal use. But a really stunning piece that looks fantastic on a stand within the home or galery. Yaka Bayaka by Zyama The masks are commonly used. The eastern Yaka mask is called kakunga(the chief” and is considered one of the important masks in the circumcision ceremony. Other Yaka masks are widely varied in style.
