TRIBAL AFRICAN SUKU YAKA MASK CONGO EX HANDLEY COLLECTION
Suku Initiation Mask- Democratic Republic of Congo Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Vegetal fibers, pigment, patina Height 34.2cm( 13.5in) without raffia collar Ex-Handley Collection. Los Altos Hills, CA Xanadu Gallery. San Francisco, CA Property from a Private Pennsylvania Collection Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes The Suku create complicated masks which are used by the initiation societies to mark the transition to adulthood. During this initiation period. Which may last a year or more, adolescent boys are separated from the village and made to undergo a series of ordeals, including circumcision, designed to measure their strength and courage. These tests often culminate in the boys' symbolic death as children and rebirth as men. Among Yaka and Suku peoples, ... morethe conclusion of mukanda-coming to manhood rites-is accompanied by performances of kholuka masks. The imagery that surmounts these masks translates into visual form the lyrics of songs that emphasize gender differences. Figural representations of humans and animals ridicule women and celebrate male virility. Contemporary works reinforce generational continuity and male solidarity by incorporating the ashes of masks danced on the occasion of preceding mukanda(Metropolitan Museum, 2011) Note this fine Suku helmet mask comes from the collection of Silicon Valley Pioneer Raymond G. Handley(1923- 2009) Handley developed the first solar powered building in Silicon Valley in the mid 1970's. After his brother. William Jules Handley, became the U.S. Ambassador to Mali, Africa in 1962, Raymond became interested in the country and wanted to make a difference in the lives of its people, drilling more than 50 water wells for Dogon villages through 300 feet of granite during the 1980's. A vibrant, adventurous and highly successful developer of Silicon Valley, Raymond became a keen collector of art and traveled extensively. His journeys took him from the highest mountains of Tibet t

The post in the back was used to hold the mask to the face as the chieftain danced around the initiate. Good condition. A slight tear in the top of the discus on the top of the hat but about one of the best I have seen. I will consider any reasonable offer.

Old Bena Lulua Mask with Headdress. Songye Yoruba Luba Baule Dan Lega Yaka
Rare old Bena Lulua Mask with headdress. The Lulua(luluwa) people are in fact a collection of small groups whose home bordered by the larger Luba state and the related and. With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. Stand not included. Thanks for looking!

BACKGROUND The Yaka people live along the Wamba River. They migrated from Angola during the 16th century and settled under the control of the Kongo Kingdom. In the 18th century their lands were annexed by the Angola-based Lunda people. But by the 19th century the Yaka had regained their independence. Yaka society is tightly structure and headed by a chief of Lunda origin, the Kiamfu, who delegates responsibilities to ministers and lineage chiefs, Unkwagata. Young men are expected to pass through various initiation stages, including circumcision. The tribe lives principally from hunting, although subsidiary farming is undertaken by the women. Prestige objects such as zoomorphic and anthropomorphic neckrests, cups, adzes, combs and terracotta pipes were carved specifically for the chiefs and were kept by them. Slit drums ending in a carved human head were used by diviners. Many figures of various sizes were cherished for their magical abilities. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwar

Congo: Tribal Used Old African Yaka Kholuka Mask
Tribal used African Old mask from the Yaka. Congo. Hand carved from a single piece of colorful painted wood. With hangings from raffia fibres. Height: 70 cm including the raffia. The Kwango River area(southwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo) is the home of some 300.000 Yaka people. The men traditionally practiced hunting, while the women cultivated manioc, yams, peas, pineapples and peanuts. The arts of the Yaka are very much alive today. Ceremonial masks and figures are the work of a sculptor who carries out his art well away from the view of other villagers. The Yaka have an initiation, the n-khanda. A special hut is built in the forest to give shelter to the postulants during their retreat; the event ends in circumcision. An occasion for great masked festivities including dances and song. Exquisite African Art - Yaka Nkisyan / Kholuka Mask 0319
Exquisite African Art- Yaka Nkisyan/ Kholuka Mask 0319 Yaka Nkisyan/ Kholuka Mask Tribe: Yaka Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo Provenance: Field Collected Materials: Wood. Fibre cloth, plant fibre, basket weave Dimensions: 63cm Tall x 32cm Wide(not incuding raffia A lovely styled Nkisyan/ Kholuka mask by the Yaka people in the Congo. This was field collected from a Yaka village whilst on a hunt for tribal art last year. This is a later 20th Century mask and in my opinion this mask has not seen a lot of tribal use. But a really stunning piece that looks fantastic on a stand within the home or galery. Yaka Bayaka by Zyama The masks are commonly used. The eastern Yaka mask is called kakunga(the chief” and is considered one of the important masks in the circumcision ceremony. Other Yaka masks are widely varied in style. Although most of them ... moreare polychrome. The nkisi masks have a long, exaggerated upward-hooked nose, open mouth. Many masks and figures are remarkable by the turned-up nose. This is a strange but common detail, and there is no decisive explanation for this nose. One source supposes that it is an allusion to the elephant's trunk. A long handle under the chin was held by the dancer. The mask is generally surmounted by a richly ornamented, abstract construction– sometimes resembling a Thailand pagoda; sometimes in animal shapes, made of twigs, covered with fibre cloth, and finally painted. A variant is the broad-nosed polychrome mask, with round, protruding eyes and square, block-like ears. These two types of masks were used in initiation ceremonies of the mukanda or nkanda societies. At the conclusion of the initiation, the masks were held in front of the faces of the dancers. There are also animal masks. The masks fulfil several functions: some serve as protection against evil forces, others ensure the fertility of the young initiate. Their role consists in frightening the public, healing the sick, and casting spells. The kholuka mask dances alone at the end of celebrations. Very popular, f
