Which includes Gurensi, Kasena, Lyele, Nuna, Nunuma, Sisala, and Winiama. These ethnicities speak dialects of the Gur language, and it was the Mossi who gave the Gurunsi name to the tribes who live in the west and south of the Mossi plateau. Together they number about 200,000 people, the most numerous of which are the Nuna, estimated at 100,000. The Gurunsi live in a region where the tsetse fly, carrier of sleeping sickness fatal to domestic animals, is rampant. As farmers, the Gurunsi adopted the slash-and-burn system of cultivation. During the dry season they also organize large collective fishing expeditions and hunt. The people believe in a creator god, Yi, who withdrew from humankind after the Creation; in the center of the village a shrine is dedicated to him. Moreover, each clan shelters magic objects in a hut– these allow them to communicate with the vital forces of nature. The masks represent the spirits of the bush. They are made in the shape of poles or in the form of animals. They are colored red, black, and white. The eyes protrude, surrounded by concentric circles, with a rather short snout on the anim

Numerous subgroups go to form the vast Kongo cultural complex, among which are the Vili, the Woyo and the Yombe. These tribes produce a diversity of artistic styles, with Kongo art being one of the best known. The Kongo demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions, such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. The Kongo pantheon was small: one all-powerful god who gave healing powers to the king, to the Nganga, and to the heads of cults. Besides their textiles of great renown, the Kongo had a funerary art of decorated steles and funerary statues in stone, very often depicting the chief seated cross-legged in a posture of reflection. Some of these statues were placed on tombs to aid the spirits of the dead to join the world of the deceased. They produced wood sculptures representing royal wives, hunters, musicians, and healers. Along with Asante, comprise two of the largest and best known ethnic groups that make up the Akan. Akan is a generic term used to refer to a large number of linguistically related peoples who live in southern Ghana and southeastern Côte d'Ivoire. The rise of the early Akan centralized states can be traced to the 13th century and is related to the opening of trade routes established to move gold throughout the region. It was not until the end of the 17th century, however, that the grand Asante Kingdom emerged in the central forest region of Ghana, when several small states united under the Chief of Kumasi in a move to achieve political freedom from the Denkyira. The Asante confederacy was dissolved by the British in 1900 and colonized in 1901. Although there is no longer a centralized Akan confederacy, Akan peoples maintain a powerful political and economic presence. Woodcarving includes stools, which are recognized as"seats" of power, and wooden dolls(akua’ba) that are associated with fertility. There are also extensive traditions of pottery and weaving throughout Akan territory. Kente cloth, woven on behalf of royalty, has come to symbo

BACKGROUND The Punu reside on the left bank of the Upper Ngoume River(Gabon) and belong to the group of tribes known as Shira which were originally part of the Luango kingdom of Angola. With the Eshira. The Lumbo, the Vili, the Galoa, and the Vungu people, the Punu migrated northwards during the 18th century and settled in the area where they continue to inhabit to this day. They live in independent villages divided into clans and families, and social cohesion is ensured by a society known as moukouji. Its primary role is to regulate community life with regards to social and judicial matters, and mainly it applies itself to the neutralization of evil forces. To this end, officiates of moukoudji utilize a cult kit that includes statuettes, human relics and masks. Punu masks represent idealized female ancestors' faces. The white color of the mask is genderless; white is a symbol for peace, deities, spirits of the dead, and the afterlife. It is thus the predominating color in funeral celebrations and memorials. Therefore the masks were worn during funerals. They appeared also in the magical rites whose function was to unmask sorcerers. The masks have realistic, most

They survive economically from farming and occasionally, cattle rearing. Makonde carvers are prolific producers of masks, statues and decorative objects. The most famous are the Lipico masks, which are used to mark a boy’s initiation into adulthood. Lipico is the name that Makonde men give to the masker of their masquerading association, who is brought from the bush into the village for initiation celebrations. The dances are accompanied by an orchestra of drummers. These masks have realistic features and are often decorated with scarification marks. The accentuated vertical development of the mask is underlined by the long line of the nose. The calm expression of the Ngil, masks stands in striking contrast to the extremely frightening, threatening character of the masked performers who only performed at night in the light of torches. The Jo society has become a sort of framework for other initiation society. Until a few decades ago, initiation was obligatory for every young man. Jo initiations take place every seven years, after candidates receive six years of special training. During this time, the young men go through a ritual death and live one week in the bush before returning to the village. There they publicly perfo

BACKGROUND The Yoruba people live mainly in the southwest of Nigeria and the south of Benin. Moreover Yoruba traditions live on as far afield as Brazil. Cuba, Haiti and the Americas in the descendants of Yoruba slaves. The term"Yoruba" is said to derive from"Yarbanci, a nickname given by the Hausa or the Fulani to the inhabitants of the Oyo Kingdom. This name was in turn introduced by missionaries from the middle of the nineteenth century, who were the first to study the Yoruba language. Prior to that, the Yoruba-speaking peoples referred to itself by the names of their different sub-groups. Earlier the Yoruba organized themselves into a large number of city-states, traditionally administered by kings(oba) who held political as well as religious power Among the various autonomous city-states, the leading place was primarily occupied by Ileff and Old Oyo. BACKGROUND The Fang constitute a vast mosaic of village communities. Established in a large zone of Atlantic equatorial Africa comprising Cameroon, continental Equatorial Guinea and nearly the whole north of Gabon. Historically the Fang were itinerant, and it is relatively recently that they have settled into this broad area. The Ngil masks are tied to the association of Ngil, which played judiciary and political roles among the Fang, assuring peace and hunting witches. These masks had the task of punishing those guilty of vices and criminals. The characteristics of the face do not express a composed serenity, but the deformation of anatomic characteristics reveals its superhuman character. This character is also reasserted by the use of white; for the Fang it is the color of death and of spirits. The accentuated vertical development of the mask is underlined by the long line of the nose. The calm expression of the Ngil, masks stands in striking contrast to the extremely frightening, threatening character of the masked performers who only performed at night in the light of torches. Worn areas, age cracks, chips, overall condition good. Thank you and please view my other items. BACKGROUND Seventy-eight different types of mask have been identified by the French scholar Marcel Griaule. All of them have large geometric eyes and stylized features. Dogon masks evoke the form of animals associated with their mythology. Yet their significance is only understood by the highest ranking cult members whose role is to explain the meaning of each mask to a captivated audience. In the West, the most famous of these masks is certainly the Kanaga mask. Its stylized face is set beneath two pairs of geometric arms directed towards the sky and the earth. The crocodile mask, carved with a long jaw, is thought to protect the Dogon from the Nyagma or vital fluids which emanate from a slain crocodile. Bird masks, known as Dyodyomini, evoke the captured bird in Dogon mythology. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. BACKGROUND The Mumuye people live in northeastern Nigeria. On the left bank of the Benue River. They cultivate sorghum, millet, and yams. Due to the difficulty of access to their lands of rocky hills and savannas, the Mumuye remained in near total isolation until the end of 1950th. Few were known about them before the 1960s. Mumuye artists are famous for their unusual wooden statues discovered only in 1968. The wooden statues came to be known as Iagalagana. These figures vary from 30cm to 160cm in height and display elongated features and exaggerated ear lobes. Carved by blacksmiths or weavers, they are kept in a separate hut located on a family compound, and are entrusted to the family member who has magical powers. Even though the Mumuye show great respect for the ancestors, their statuary does not depict ancestors but rather incarnates tutelary spirits. These statues were used by both diviners and healers, whose professions included diagnosis and cure of ill health and other kinds of misfortune. The figures were used to greet rainmaker’s clients, guard the house, and as the owner’s confidant. They are also used in trials when men in dispute swear on the statue, which

BACKGROUND Dan people live in the western part of the West Coast and into Liberia where the land is forested in the south and bordered by savannah in the north. They make their living from framing cocoa. Rice and manioc. Before unifying secret societies were set up at the turn of the century, each Dan village was an autonomous socio-political unit governed by a chief elected on the base of his wealth and social position. Slaves were finally emancipated in the USA, after centuries of brutal oppression and exploitation. Some of these people came back to Africa and live in present day Liberia. Although they still practiced some of the traditions, they were a mixed group of people that practiced different customs. Neighboring tribes mainly from the West Coast influenced them and the dominant Dan tribe took root in Liberia. Today, the leopard society acts as a major regular of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest.
