The Kota revere the relics of ancestors. Ancestor worship formed the core of the family group’s religious and social life. At the death of a chief. The ... moreinitiates would take from the body of the deceased various relics, which were then decorated with metal and rubbed with powders of multiple magical powers. The Kota have produced large quantity of statues of ancestors with the diamond-shaped lower part called mbulu-ngulu; these rather two-dimensional sculptures are in wood; symbolic metals were applied to the upper part in strips or sheets to add power. Copper in particular was identified with longevity and power. These statues stood guard in cylindrical bark boxes. On baskets or bundles called bwete that contained the skulls and bones of important ancestors. Bound into a packet and lashed to the base of a carved figure. The bones formed a stable base that allowed the image to stand more or less upright. Thanks to the diversity of the groups, scattered over a vast area, a great variety of different styles of figures has developed, some of them endogenous and some influenced by neighboring styles. Kota figures represent an extremely stylized human body. Reduced to shoulders and“arms, in emptied lozenge shape, surmounted by a large face framed by an ample coiffure with hanging tresses. The face, always oval, may be concave(female) convex(male) or concave-convex, with a forehead in quarter-sphere(also male) The reliquaries were kept outside the homes, in huts at the edge of the village. Only the initiates of the lineage had access to this sacred place. At the time of initiation in the reliquary cult, the clans would meet to perform communal rituals; each clan’s chief would dance holding the reliquary. Some reliquaries featured a large figure representing the lineage founder along with some smaller figures representing his successors. There are figures with two identical or different faces made on two opposite sides of the flat head. Secured on a wooden base. Measurements: 22" in height by 10 1/2" at width.

These rare and facinating reliquary figures are always in male/female pairs. This is the male; I am selling the female of the pair concurrently on eBay- ... moreplease check my other items. The Ambete are part of the same group as the Kota and Punu and share with them a cult surrounding ancestral bones. The reliquary figures are particularly interesting. They are usually quite large. Columnar in shape and have a hatch at the back. It is sometimes claimed that bones are kept in this compartment. In all the examples I have seen, the space available is much smaller than the reiquaries used by the Fank, Kota, etc. I am inclined to think, that apart from some fragments, this compartment was chiefly intended to receive Bilongo- magical substances to keep the guardian powerful- rather than human remains. The latter would have been stored in a more secure basket beside the guardian. Interestingly. The hatches of these two contain a large clam shell, fastened in place with a nail and set in a bed of raffia, apparently a fetish object, leaving little room for anything else. The figures are quite large at 29" tall and wear necklaces. The faces are extremely distictive. Lozenge-shaped, with a central brow beneath which are smallish features designed to scare away potential thieves of the precious bones. Rows of teeth give the mouth bite. This is a rare and powerful figure. Seldom offered for sale on eBay.

On the frontier with the Republic of Congo, the Kota People comprise a number of small tribes such as the Mahongwe, the Sango, the Obamba and the Shamaye, who all pratise similar ceremonies. It is thought they migrated southwards during the 18th century and settled in the upper valley of the Ogooue River, in a forest environment. Their main resources come mostly from hunting and agriculture. Historically, the Kota left their dead unburied in the forest, far from the village. Under the influence of neighboring tribes, they then began to bury their dead. Chiefs were always buried, but often their bones, especially their skull were later exhumed and placed with magical objects in a bark box or a basket called a Bwete, in which a carved figure was inserted. A custom base is included with this piece. It is important to properly exhibit a beautiful piece of art. The splendor of the piece cannot be fully revealed without a correct display. Custom bases can cost a minimum of thirty and up to several hundred dollars depending on its complexity and size. It is very difficult to locate a good stand

The sculpture communicates directly with the viewer and its overall impact that is greater than the sum of the parts. This is a wonderful. Old 19th Century sculpture.possibly Benin according to our local antique shop. It is a powerful piece. A great tribal primitive.I've posted many photos so you can examine it in detail. The patina is exquisite and shows oxydation and patination as you'd expect in such a piece. This piece would look perfect in any early or mid twentieth century environment as it has a space-age or eames era look. Even though it is an older sculpture. But still rather impressionist in mood. It is no wonder that the early modernist artists of the 19th and early 20th century(like Picasso. Miro, and Chagall for example) borrowed heavily from African art. You can actually feel the power and intensity of the sculpture. It conveys a fantastic sense of connection born out of its simplistic lines. Condition: This is an old piece with all the patina. Oxydation, etc you'd expect of an old African antiquity. On the frontier with the Republic of Congo, the Kota People comprise a number of small tribes such as the Mahongwe, the Sango, the Obamba and the Shamaye, who all pratise similar ceremonies. It is thought they migrated southwards during the 18th century and settled ... morein the upper valley of the Ogooue River, in a forest environment. MAHONGWE(HONGWE. HUNGWE, MAHONGOUE, MAHOUNGOUE, OSSYEBA) Gabon The Mahongwe constitute the northern branch of the Kota peoples. They live in the extreme northeast of Gabon near the Republic of the Congo border. Numbering between 3.000 and 5,000 individuals, they have long remained apart owing to their obstinate resistance to the penetration of French administration. The Mahongwe practice an ancestor cult(bwiti or bwete) that was at the center of a system of beliefs and rites and ancestor worship formed the core of the family group’s religious and social life. Lot 18, Fine Kota Mbulu-ngula Reliquary Figure Secured on Wooden Base, Gabon
The Kota revere the relics of ancestors. Ancestor worship formed the core of the family group’s religious and social life. At the death of a chief. The initiates would take from the body of the deceased various relics, which were then decorated with metal and rubbed with powders of multiple magical powers. The bones formed a ... morestable base that allowed the image to stand more or less upright. Measurements: 20" in height by 9" at width. From base 21" in height. Materials: wood. Brass sheeting, secrured on wooden base. INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING PRICES HAVE GREATLY I
