Oxidation on metal, dirt cloth, encrustation worn away in places, Dan Firewatch Mask Zakpai Ge Liberia Africa Additional Information: A beautiful and strong wooden face mask with gorgeous dark patina and decoration of cowrie shells. Brass bells and amulets with charms wrapped in cotton cloth. This is a Dan mask known as ‘Zakpai ge’(or Zakpei Ge) or Gunye Ge(gunyege) an active and aggressive mask that serves a number of functions. When performing as a ‘firewatch’ mask, Zakpai would insure proper use of cooking fires by women and will throw sticks and things about and knock over cook pots with their meals into the fires and may even beat the women if they were careless in their use of fire. In the past it also served as a war mask. This is a classic example of traditional old mask with delicate features, including a fine nose a prominent mouth and the typical Zakpai Ge round and open eyes with a dynamic profile of the face and caved in a very thin wood. This beautiful mask would be a good addition to a collection. It shows much handling and some age. Recommended Reading: Harley. G.W. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. A common form of mask among the Dan people. The"passport" mask, as it is referred to by western cultures, was often carried by those traveling away from their village, and they were said to offer protection during such times. The masks could also be used to bear as a witness during an initiation ceremony. Often carried on the small of the back, these masks rarely exceeded ten inches in length. This passport mask is a very common form, featuring the typical bulged forehead, narrowed eyes, pursed lips, and dark patina. Its exterior displays very few tooling marks, and the interior is, as is usually the case, more roughly rendered. It s

Lot of 3 African Dan Tribe Ceremonial Masks
The Dan mask was used during initiation ceremonies. These types of masks are made and worn exclusively. By male dancers. Dan masks are unique and only carved by initiated members of the male Poro society. The mask served to protect the young initiate against destructive or evil forces from the time of initiation. Till he one day enters the spirit realm. The Dan people classify surroundings into two realms- the village with all inhabitants(human realm) And the forest(bon) spirit realm) where the spirits reign, and wild animals roam freely. The forest is regarded as sacred. And crossing the boundary between the human realm, and the spirit realm, may only be done by saying a prayer and wearing materials from both worlds. This creates a link between the two realms. The mask depicted above is a perfect example of the materials. Once the male mask ... moredancer dons the mask. He is transformed into a spirit. The mask dancer goes into a deep trance during rituals and brings forth messages of wisdom from his forebears. The messages is inaudible and in uncontrollable utters, a wise man accompany the dancer during the ritual and translates the messages. The messages are often words of great wisdom, prescribing a way of life that will lead to longevity, health and prosperity. The cowry shells not only represent a decorative function. But also indicate that the sprits have blessed the young initiate with wealth. In the past cowry shells was used as money) The feathers signify beauty and the ability to take flight if danger arises. An important feature of initiation masks is that ears are not represented. There is one piece of wood chipped out of the inside of one mask can't see unless worn. Happy Bidding! Exceptional old Dan Runners Mask from West Africa African Masks from Liberia
A beautiful older(mid 20th Century. Perhaps earlier) Runner's Dan mask called a GUNYEGE MASK. ON AUCT ION Round eyed masks like this one are used in racing games and ceremonies in which the masked spirit must compete against unmasked runners. If the wearer loses the race. It means the spirit has deserted that person and the mask goes to the winner, as a trophy to wear in the next race. Its wearer is pursued by an unmasked runner or runners and, if caught, the unmasked runner wears the mask and is, in turn, pursued. Historically, these races trained men to fight and the winner gained social recognition. Nowadays, the races are more like a game. It has a beautiful use patina- inside(breath patina- if you've ever put on a Halloween mask you know it gets very hot and steamy/sweaty inside) This patina is very difficult to reproduce/fake) ... moreand outside(wear and patina/shine consistent with a mask used ethnographically with sacrificial offers(cola. Betel nuts) being made on the top of the mask. Very dense wood- consistent with masks crafted before 1950(most likely post 1940) Holes in back are square- one of the true signs of older masks that tyically date prior to 1950 and small- also consistent with non drilled holes that are burned out with a metal rod or porcupine quills(this strengthens holes) In my gallery I have a pricetage of $720.00 which is a fair price- masks of this quality sell for much higher at auctions and tribal art shows. Good luck with the auction! The materials include Wood. Metal(circular metal around each eye, covered with pitch, one(more recent but pre collection) nail in upper right of left eyehole through metal, into wood, natural bark fiber coiffure(hair) and natural human hair for the beard(yes, real human hair) and natural fibers to attach coiffure to mask.
