Pigment, Approximate Age, second ... morehalf 20th century, Dimensions, Height: 8.5 Inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, old chip in foot to the back. cracks in places, Holo Male Figure Upraised Arms Rare DR Congo Africa Additional Information: This strangely carved figure with a hole carved in its chest to receive offerings or magical substances shares a number of possible stylistic sources with possible association to the Holo people. It must be also kept in mind that Holo sculpture takes much from its Yaka and Suku and Chokwe neighbors. This is seen in the details and style of carving as in this carved male figure with upraised arms. The stance and facial shaping argue a possible source among the Holo. The Holo are a smaller grouping of people numbering between 6-10.000 living in close proximity to the Yaka, Suku, Chokwe and Pende people. Coming from Angola sometime during the 16-17th centuries they are now settled along the banks of the Kwango River. What we know of their art often dates itself to a mid-1950's messianic cult rising during which much of their ritual sculpture was destroyed. Therefore objects either pre-date this event or were hidden during the destruction that took place. Holo had other works and objects such as slit drums, framed figures(nzambi) masks and ironwork that were related to royal elites. At best the character of the piece will stand as a challenge to place among a single people and yet it has itâs own simple sculptural charm as well as magical potential in the cavity to hold substances. Figures like this were used in the cult Mahamba associated with healing. Fertility, and protection. The hole in its chest served to receive magical substances that empowered the figure. Stunning Suku Helmet Mask - Congo / DRC
This is a beautiful antique Suku helmet mask from the Bandundu region in central DRC. The Suku is a medium tribe. Which presents similarities to the neighboring, larger, Yaka tribe. Their sculpture includes great variation in style, and is often characterized by highly expressionist anthropomorphic features. Masks were actually used both for initiation and amusement. The piece here shows an elongated face with curved nose, closed eyes and scarification motives on the cheeks. The face is covered in white kaolin pigments and also shows blue pigments. The upper part of the mask shows a round hat, with red pigments and two finely carved feathers-like attributes on the sides. This is a very finely carved mask, with a strong expressivity. Dimensions are 10x8x8.

One side of the cup is decorated with a carved horn and incised motifs; the other side has a carved face and incised patterns. The handle is ornamented with a carved human Head. Wooden double-mouthed cups like this are found among the Suku and the Yaka peoples of the Southwest region of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Kwango-Kwilu river basin. The Suku have been in this region since the ... more16th century. At that time they were part of the Kongo Kingdom. With the invasion of the region by the Lunda in the early 18th. The Suku, led by Menikongo, were forced to migrate to the East. The expansion of the Yaka in the 18th and 19th had as result the dispersion of the Suku among their neighbors Pindi, Holo, and Mbala. Today, in some areas Yaka and Suku as well as Holo and Suku live together. The Suku have been influenced in their art by their more populous and well-known neighbors the Yaka, Kongo, Holo and their neighbors of Kwilu region. The art of the Suku and Yaka often share similarities for as early as the Seventeenth century the Suku were already settled in the region with the Yaka, moving into the area slightly later. As a result, the sculptures of both Suku and Yaka are often cross-referenced as they share certain stylistic and cultural uses of their masks and figures. This is the case for this wooden double-mouthed cup, called Kopa. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These ... moresocieties exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. BACKGROUND The Suku people have lived in the South-Western part of the Democratic Republic of Congo– Formerly Zaire– since the 16th century. With the arrival of the Yaka and the Lunda in their territory. They were split into two autonomous groups. Their main economic resource is farming, but occasionally communal hunts are organized. Stylistically, their sculptures are characterized by an enlarged head with an almond-shaped mouth, a triangular nose and coffee-bean eyes, all set under elaborate coiffure. The Suku carved figures which were used during fertility ceremonies. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. The cup is decorated with a carved face and diamond motifs on each side. Wooden double-mouthed cups like this are found among the Suku and the Yaka peoples of the Southwest region of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Kwango-Kwilu river basin. The Suku have been in this region since the 16th century. At that time they were part of the Kongo Kingdom. With the invasion of the region by the Lunda in the early 18th. The art of the Suku and Yaka often share similarities for as early as the Seventeenth century the Suku were already settled in the region with the Yaka, moving into the area slightly later. As a result, the sculptures of both Suku and Yaka are often cross-referenced as they share certain stylistic and cultural uses of their masks and figures. This is the case for this wooden double-mouthed cup, called Kopa. Among the Yaka and the Suku cups such as this were used by as regalia of the lineage chief or matrilineal headmen to drink palm-wine at special ceremonies.
