Info about Suku: Basuku) The 80.000 Suku people have lived in the southwestern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo since the 16th century. Their main economic resource is farming. Cultivation of yams, manioc, and groundnuts is done primarily by women. This is supplemented by the men hunting with dogs in the surrounding forest and by the women gathering wild berries, nuts, and roots. Occasional fishing in the Kwango River also provides some food. Although hunting rarely provides substantial quantities of meat to the Suku diet, it is considered an important part of male culture. Palm tree plantations provide the Suku with palm oil, an important commodity for local and international trade. The Suku have an initiation. The n-khanda. A special hut is built in the forest to give shelter to the postulants during their retreat; the event ends in circumcision, an occasion for great masked festivities including dances and song. They extensively use masks to promote success in hunting and to venerate ancestors. The helmet mask presented here, with its white face and blue vertical"scarification" marks, probably originates from the northern part of Suku territory, as the southern artists use quite different color schemes. Usually the Suku mask may be differentiated from other masks by the use of white paint for the face, as well as by the presence of blue pigments for the eyelids, and vertical scars beneath the eyes. Some, like the one illustrated, are carved with a raised hair crest, carefully worked with incised circles. The strongly carved face would have been painted white at some point in the past, with small vertical markings under the eye in blue or black. The detailing of the eyes and the line that separates the face and hair are evidence the work of a skilled carver. A larg

Type of Object, Figure, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola, People, Holo, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, second ... morehalf 20th century, Dimensions, Height: 8.5 Inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, old chip in foot to the back. cracks in places, Holo Male Figure Upraised Arms Rare DR Congo Africa Additional Information: This strangely carved figure with a hole carved in its chest to receive offerings or magical substances shares a number of possible stylistic sources with possible association to the Holo people. It must be also kept in mind that Holo sculpture takes much from its Yaka and Suku and Chokwe neighbors. This is seen in the details and style of carving as in this carved male figure with upraised arms. The stance and facial shaping argue a possible source among the Holo. The Holo are a smaller grouping of people numbering between 6-10.000 living in close proximity to the Yaka, Suku, Chokwe and Pende people. Coming from Angola sometime during the 16-17th centuries they are now settled along the banks of the Kwango River. What we know of their art often dates itself to a mid-1950's messianic cult rising during which much of their ritual sculpture was destroyed. Therefore objects either pre-date this event or were hidden during the destruction that took place. Holo had other works and objects such as slit drums, framed figures(nzambi) masks and ironwork that were related to royal elites. At best the character of the piece will stand as a challenge to place among a single people and yet it has it’s own simple sculptural charm as well as magical potential in the cavity to hold substances. Figures like this were used in the cult Mahamba associated with healing. Fertility, and protection. The hole in its chest served to receive magical substances that empowered the figure. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. PhD. 28341* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorit

Stunning Suku Helmet Mask - Congo / DRC
This is a beautiful antique Suku helmet mask from the Bandundu region in central DRC. The Suku is a medium tribe. Which presents similarities to the neighboring, larger, Yaka tribe. Their sculpture includes great variation in style, and is often characterized by highly expressionist anthropomorphic features. Masks were actually used both for initiation and amusement. The piece here shows an elongated face with curved nose, closed eyes and scarification motives on the cheeks. The face is covered in white kaolin pigments and also shows blue pigments. The upper part of the mask shows a round hat, with red pigments and two finely carved feathers-like attributes on the sides. This is a very finely carved mask, with a strong expressivity. Dimensions are 10x8x8.

TRIBAL AFRICAN SUKU YAKA MASK CONGO EX HANDLEY COLLECTION
Suku Initiation Mask- Democratic Republic of Congo Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Vegetal fibers, pigment, patina Height 34.2cm( 13.5in) without raffia collar Ex-Handley Collection. Los Altos Hills, CA Xanadu Gallery. San Francisco, CA Property from a Private Pennsylvania Collection Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes The Suku create complicated masks which are used by the initiation societies to mark the transition to adulthood. During this initiation period. Which may last a year or more, adolescent boys are separated from the village and made to undergo a series of ordeals, including circumcision, designed to measure their strength and courage. These tests often culminate in the boys' symbolic death as children and rebirth as men. Among Yaka and Suku peoples, ... morethe conclusion of mukanda-coming to manhood rites-is accompanied by performances of kholuka masks. The imagery that surmounts these masks translates into visual form the lyrics of songs that emphasize gender differences. Figural representations of humans and animals ridicule women and celebrate male virility. Contemporary works reinforce generational continuity and male solidarity by incorporating the ashes of masks danced on the occasion of preceding mukanda(Metropolitan Museum, 2011) Note this fine Suku helmet mask comes from the collection of Silicon Valley Pioneer Raymond G. Handley(1923- 2009) Handley developed the first solar powered building in Silicon Valley in the mid 1970's. After his brother. William Jules Handley, became the U.S. Ambassador to Mali, Africa in 1962, Raymond became interested in the country and wanted to make a difference in the lives of its people, drilling more than 50 water wells for Dogon villages through 300 feet of granite during the 1980's. A vibrant, adventurous and highly successful developer of Silicon Valley, Raymond became a keen collector of art and traveled extensively. His journeys took him from the highest mountains of Tibet t

Suku Carved Double-mouthed Cup with Figural Handle DR Congo African
Title, Suku Carved Double-mouthed Cup with Figural Handle DR Congo, Type of Object, Artifact. Container, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Suku, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, second half 20 th century, Dimensions, 9.25 inches L. x 3.5 inches H. Overall Condition, Good     Damage/Repair, crack with repair to bowl. Chips, Additional Information: The double mouth in this wooden cup is separated by a bridge. One side of the cup is decorated with a carved horn and incised motifs; the other side has a carved face and incised patterns. The handle is ornamented with a carved human Head. Wooden double-mouthed cups like this are found among the Suku and the Yaka peoples of the Southwest region of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Kwango-Kwilu river basin. The Suku have been in this region since the ... more16th century. At that time they were part of the Kongo Kingdom. With the invasion of the region by the Lunda in the early 18th. The Suku, led by Menikongo, were forced to migrate to the East. The expansion of the Yaka in the 18th and 19th had as result the dispersion of the Suku among their neighbors Pindi, Holo, and Mbala. Today, in some areas Yaka and Suku as well as Holo and Suku live together. The Suku have been influenced in their art by their more populous and well-known neighbors the Yaka, Kongo, Holo and their neighbors of Kwilu region. The art of the Suku and Yaka often share similarities for as early as the Seventeenth century the Suku were already settled in the region with the Yaka, moving into the area slightly later. As a result, the sculptures of both Suku and Yaka are often cross-referenced as they share certain stylistic and cultural uses of their masks and figures. This is the case for this wooden double-mouthed cup, called Kopa. Among the Yaka and the Suku cups such as this were used by as regalia of the lineage chief or matrilineal headmen to drink palm-wine at special ceremonies. The double-mouthed cup was considered as a personal object. It was carefully p

Congo: Large Tribal used Very rare African Suku figure.
Large Old and Rare Tribal us. Large Tribal used Very rare African Suku figure. Congo. This is a very Rare Suku figure and handmade from wood. Height: 67 cm. ed African mask from Igbo. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These ... moresocieties exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. Damage/Repair, Cracks and chips in places. Stain to the back, Additional Information: Large masks such as this known as Kakungu were used by both the Yaka and the Suku worn ... moreby priests during circumcision ceremonies of young boys while they are in circumcision camps known as mukanda among the Yaka. The Suku are and have been heavily influenced by the Yaka carving masking traditions especially among the western Suku where they share many masking forms. Where the Yaka versions were brightly colored the Suku Kakungu masks are less colorful but sculpturally more dynamic. Worn as a helmet the priest/leader of the boys camp would wear this large mask and use the eye holes just below the eyes to look through. This mask does not have eye holes. This large mask. Over two feet tall has a large forehead, bulging eyes, great saggy cheeks, a great oversized nose and a small mouth carved in relief all nearly lost in the excessive features of the face. This really extraordinary Quaking mask was meant to impress the young boys undergoing circumcision with the power of the spirits and the authority of the priests. Raffia was attached in a kind of ruff of vegetation making the mask look all the unworldly. Large masks are not common in collections and this Kakunga would add a unique piece of Yaka/Suku art to a collection. I have examined this piece and agree with t

Raffia was attached in a kind of ruff of vegetation making the mask look all the unworldly. Large masks are not common in collections and this Kakunga would add a unique piece of Yaka/Suku art to a collection. I have examined this piece and agree with th

Info about Suku: Basuku) The 80.000 Suku people have lived in the southwestern part of the Democratic Republic of the ... moreCongo since the 16th century. BACKGROUND The Suku people have lived in the South-Western part of the Democratic Republic of Congo– Formerly Zaire– since the 16th century. With the arrival of the Yaka and the Lunda in their territory. They were split into two autonomous groups. Their main economic resource is farming, but occasionally communal hunts are organized. Stylistically, their sculptures are characterized by an enlarged head with an almond-shaped mouth, a triangular nose and coffee-bean eyes, all set under elaborate coiffure. The Suku carved figures which were used during fertility ceremonies. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Suku Double-mouthed Cup with Faces Congo Africa SALE WAS $69

Pigment, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 5 inches L. x 2.5 inches W. x 2.5 inches H. The cup is decorated with a carved face and diamond motifs on each side. Wooden double-mouthed cups like this are found among the Suku and the Yaka peoples of the Southwest region of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Kwango-Kwilu river basin. The Suku have been in this region since the 16th century. At that time they were part of the Kongo Kingdom. With the invasion of the region by the Lunda in the early 18th. The ... moreSuku, led by Menikongo, were forced to migrate to the East. It was carefully preserved. When the owner or a lineage chief died, the cup was passed down to his successor. Thus, a cup could survive from generation
