Because of their resulting isolation, they have preserved many of their traditional art production methods, and are masters of producing artistic functional objects. Their art is highly versatile, and exhibits themes from their lifestyle, surroundings, and their cultural mythology. They produce a wide variety of masks and figures in addition to their famous doors, and their art has become quite popular amongst collectors. This beautiful stool is finely adorned and detailed. And was collected from the Mali region of the Dogon's native territory. The figures present on them are believed to have spiritual power, and are intended to protect the contents of the room and its owner. This stool features a great number of Nommo figures, protective figures representative of the earliest ancestors in Dogon mythology. They are said to have been bisexual water gods, created by the ultimate god Amma, and sent to Earth in an ark, where they then founded the Dogon family lineages and introduced various activities, such as smithing, farming, etc. The stool is in good condition, displaying the normal age and wear-related rub marks, scratches, etc. It's upper surface is decorated with a finely hand hammered sheet of metal. Among the Asante an elaborate stool like this serves multiple purposes in addition to providing a well-designed seat to sit upon. Asante stools take their name Dwa from the wood out of which they are carved. When a daughter reaches the age of puberty her father is expected to give her stool that becomes not only her property but also identification with her soul and being. So that often stools will be seen with their upper corners worn from being leaned up against the wall or laid down on their sides. All to prevent some one else from sitting on it or worse a malevolent spirit could take charge of the stool and the owner's spirit. Stools are also identified with the various royal states as each state will have it s own design as will their king and queen mother. The teeth are shown filed, a procedure designed to enhance the erotic beauty of women. This is a genuine phemba figure probably around 35- 50 years old. It has been regularly rubbed with palm- oil and has a characteristic of oxidized oil. There is damage to the base and cracks in the body have been filled with tree resin. Used for tribal repairs. 2 African Senofu style stool carved from one piece of wood
I really don't know anything about these 2 stools. I have seen similar ones called Senofu stools. I do believe that they are African and they are carved from a single piece of wood. They are quite heavy for their size. The larger one measures about 14 1/2" by 8" by 7" You can see that the large one has one leg that was broken and reglued. It does seem solid and I have pictured that for you. The small on measures about 11" by 6" by 5" and has some decoration on the legs. They both are carved on the top with somewhat of a bowl shape. I suppose that makes them more comfortable to sit on. These may have been made for children because of there smaller size. For sale is an West African grasslands wood stool from the Baumun Tribe in the country of Cameroon. The age is from the early to mid 20th century and it has great patina. It is 13" W X 9" D X 10 3/4" H and in very good condition for its age with 2 minor stable age cracks along the top: The cracks do not go through the seat as shown in the photos. ANTIQUE VINTAGE AFRICAN ASHANTI WOODEN STOOL EARLY 20TH C. HAND CARVED WOOD RARE! This listings offer is this fine and stylish antique/vintage African Ashanti carved wooden stool believed to date from the early to mid 20th century and originating from Ghana. These stools were fiercely reserved for only the chief and those of high rank an extreme wisdom. The stool has a bowed seat raised to either end and an 5 columned carved support with a solid carved central column. The seat has an ornate carving around the edges of the support and of the center column. And sits on a double layered foot, with a solid direct central center column with carved notches, and the 4 outter columns are slender with pointed carved accents. The wood certainly has some wear and character flaws, color and minimal splits, from extensive genuine tribal use, and has a ... morewonderful age patina. A wonderful period example for any serious collector, who is aware that these pieces was almost never signed, and nor is this one. This piece should have an estimated value around $2,200 or more, not sure because research varies, but any perspective buyer is welcome to do online or other forms of research. This is solid wood and looks to have been hand carved. Unfortunately I don't know anything about the origin of this stool. I suspect it is a hand carved reproduction but I do not know for sure. There are no markings or labels on it anywhere. Regardless it's in excellent shape and very sturdy.
