An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their ... morecopious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing it holds sacred. This mask originates from the Gelede cult, which focuses its attention on the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities helmet masks such as these are worn on or over the head with a raffia costume, and danced in reverence and celebration. On the'cheeks' of the face are large identifying scarification marks. It still has most of its original pigment, including white(kaolin) green, etc. Color of the pigment is faded in some areas, but still represented strongly for the most part, and the piece stands well on its own without support. Wear and age marks are in evidence as is common, including minor age cracking, rub marks, etc. but the piece does not appear to have undergone any serious breaks or repairs. This is a beautiful, prominent, eye catching standalone piece, and a highly coveted artform from the Yoruba culture! This piece measures in at 10.5" x 10.5" x 11" With a weight of three and a half pounds. MEDIUM: Wood. Pigment NOTHING we sell at African Tribal Creations is made in China. Taiwan, Thailand, or wherever. All items are 100% guaranteed AFRICAN ART. Made in Africa BY the indigenous peoples of Africa. We have 100% positive f

Few African artisans achieved as highly as the people of the now extinct Benin kingdom. The Benin people were denizens of Nigeria, and they brought the art of bronze(actually mostly brass) casting to a height that has likely not yet been exceeded on the continent of Africa. Upon the arrival of European missionaries and invaders, the discovery of Benin art led them to the belief that this art was stolen from the Jews or Egyptians, and could not have been produced by these people who were at that point considered ... moresubhuman. Extraordinary masks and figures had been produced using the simple lost-wax casting method, in addition to the now famous life-sized brass leopard figures, exclusively associated with the oba. Lot 2, Exquiste Igbo Mmwo Spirit Maiden Mask /Yoruba / Nigeria
The Igbo use thousands of masks. Which incarnate unspecified spirits of the dead, forming a vast community of souls. The outstanding characteristic of the many Igbo masks is that they are painted chalk white, the color of the spirit. Masked dancers wore extremely elaborate costumes(sometimes ornamented with mirrors) and often their feet and hands were covered. With their masks, the Igbo oppose beauty to bestiality, the feminine to the masculine, black to white. The masks, of wood or fabric, are employed in a variety of dramas: social satires, sacred rituals(for ancestors and invocation of the gods) initiation, second burials, and public festivals, which now include Christmas and Independence Day. Some masks appear at only one festival, but the majority appear at many or all. Best known are those of the Northern Ibo mmo society. Which represent ... morethe spirits of deceased maidens and their mothers with masks symbolizing beauty. Among the Southern Ibo, the ekpe society. Introduced from the Cross River area. Uses contrasting masks to represent the maiden spirit and the elephant spirit, the latter representing ugliness and aggression and the former representing beauty and peacefulness. A similar contrast is found in their okorosia masks. Which correspond to the mmo of the Northern Ibo. The Eastern Ibo are best known for masquerades associated with the harvest festival. In which the forms of the masks are determined by tradition, though the content of the play varies from year to year. Stock characters include Mbeke. The European; Mkpi. The he-goat; and Mba. Which appear in pairs, one representing a boy dressed as a girl mimicking the behavior of a girl, the other representing the girl being satirized. Measurements: 17" at length by 8" at width by 13" at depth.

ANTIQUE YORUBA DANCE MASK TRIBAL ART
This is a Yoruba headdress or mask for the Egungun ceremony. Yoruba religion is based in ancestor worship and the Egungun ceremony glorifies the ancestor. And communicates with them through the dancer who goes into a trance. The“masks” are worn on top of the head so that the ancestors who are in the heavens above may see them. This mask was purchased at auction in London on Sept. 29, 1988 at Phillips sale of Tribal art, lot 183. While most tribal art on the market is new and made for collectors, we purchased only at the London auctions to acquire genuine examples which were made for, and used by tribal peoples. The mask is about 9” high, carved from a single piece of wood and in condition as shown. It alternates male and female heads, representing a deceased ancestor couple, each twice for emphasis as well as aesthetic balance. Yoruba Ibeji Twin Figures, African Tribal Creations, art Yorba mask Nigeria wood
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their copious forms of artwork. Each identified by particular thing ... moreit holds sacred. These figures adhere to the sculptural tradition of the Ibeji cult, with Ibeji meaning'twins' as the Yoruba hold twins to be sacred, and remarkably, as a people, have one of the highest incidences of twin births in the world. It is believed that twins are a single soul harbored within two bodies, and whatever ill befalls one twin, befalls the spirit of both. In the event that one twin dies, a frequent occurrence due to the high infant mortality rate in much of Africa, the soul(or half of the soul) residing within the other twin will be considered out of balance, causing life difficulties, etc. The parents of this surviving twin would have a figure commissioned by a local diviner, which would then be treated as would the surviving twin, and would be believed to become a vessel for the other half of the soul. In this way, the soul could remain balanced for the surviving individual. In the event that both twins were to die, a commemorative set of figures would be commissioned. The figures are, stylistically, produced similarly to other figures in Yoruba culture, but the young are generally depicted as adults, in the artist's interpretation of features po
Fine African Art Congo Hemba Tribal Mask Masque dogon yoruba songye senofu lobi
Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey ... moremask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer. Exquiste Yoruba Gelede Mask, Nigeria / Santeria
Throughout Yorubaland. Human figures are represented in a fundamentally naturalistic way, except for bulging eyes; flat, protruding, and usually parallel lips; and stylized ears. Within the basic canon of Yoruba sculpture, many local styles can be distinguished, down to the hand of the individual artist. Today, Nigeria is structured by a number of cults. The Gelede cult pays homage to the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities. Helmet masks carved in the form of a human face are worn. On top of the head there is either an elaborate coiffure or a carved representation of a human activity. The masks of the Epa cult. Which is connected with both the ancestors and agriculture, vary enormously according to the town in which they appear. Old Shango / Chango, Shrine Figure on Epa Head Mask, Yoruba, Nigeria / Santeria
Shango known as a powerful warrior and the fourth legendary king of the Oyo kingdom. Shango was renowned for his fiery temper, which was often compared to the thunderous roar and flashing lightning of a storm. The many myths surrounding Shango emphasize his impulsive use of power and his ability to destroy. One myth mentions that Shango’s chiefs ended his tyrannical rule by dethroning him and expelling him from the capital. After Shango hangs himself, his friends learn charm-making and acquire the power to attract lightning to take vengeance on the houses of their(and the former king’s) enemies. A second story recounts how Shango, fascinated with magical powers, inadvertently kills several of his wives and children with a thunderstorm he conjured up. His sorrow leads him to abdicate the throne and hang himself; his enemies scorn his name. ... moreWhen thunderstorms destroy much of the capital, Shango’s followers say it is the former king himself punishing the slanderers. Carved from a solid block of wood. This old Shango figure sits on an Epa head mask surrounded by Ibeji figures. PLEASE NOTE: PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS OF PURCHASE. Antique/Vintage African Nigerian Yoruba Gelede Colonial Mask
Great. Fun vintage/antique Nigerian Yoruba Gelede society dance mask showing a colonial figure wearing his foreign hat. Gelede is one of the Yoruba's three major masking traditions. The masks are traditionally used in dances to honor the women of the community. Especially the powerful"Great Mothers" including both the elderly and the dead ancestors. The performances entertain, educate, and are also aimed at promoting peace and social harmony within a particular community. However, not all masks are positive, but some are made to ridicule negative groups. Images of Europeans were depicted as caricatures and their mannerisms exaggerated in dances. These dance masks were used during the colonial period as a way to criticise the policies imposed on the Africans. The outsiders' outlandish headwear is usually shown, as well as ... moredepicting their shallow complexions by using yellow paint- as this mask has on the lips. 12" L; very good condition with signs of use inside. And normal wear for its age. I leave masks for sale"as is" but I have used"Renaisance Wax" a wonderful product developed by the British Museum for their collection) on my own collection and I think a very light coat of the wax might bring out the colors or the face and hat better. gsrx_vers_526(GS 6.6.6(526)
