This region is an area rich in a number of mask types serving major masking associations with a number of masks yet unclear as to their specific significance. The Igbo have produced a few known gourd masks. a famous example at The Metropolitan Museum. New York) This mask also shares some stylistic elements with the Ekpe or Ojuku group. The mask could also come from the Yoruba. Neighbors of the Igbo for the symbolin the back of this mask recall some egungun or Gelede masks. No example has been found in books. The face is characterized by a long nose, two circular openings in place of eyes, a cowrie snail as mouth. The mask itself is made from calabash and cowrie shells are glued into the suface and onto plaited raffia fibers. Beades strands in the form of veils, ending with cowries, are attached around the mask, This mask is in good condition and was well preserved despite the fragility of the calabas

And oftentimes the spiritual and stylistic forms intermingle between regions, making it difficult to trace this mask to one particular location. However. Masking traditions throughout the various Igbo regions share underlying themes and similar spirits. And so the purpose of this maiden mask can be at least somewhat clarified. Of the two ... moremost important mask types among the Igbo- those idealizing the qualities of young women. And those representing the powers of men, the maiden mask embodies the former. When the mask is worn. Always by a man, the maiden spirit a dancer personifies represents the ideals of youthful feminine grace and beauty, albeit exaggerated both in the masks and the performance of them. Maiden mask artists favored red. Orange, yellow, and black pigments to highlight their carvings, along with other colors, and these can be seen on the entirety of the mask. As in a number of the more elaborate masks. Which can have anywhere from one to three hair crests. Maiden masks are used mostly during agricultural festivals(usually the dry season) and the second funerals of prominent society members. On latter occasions maiden spirits are invoked alongside other spirits as appropriate escorts of the highly respected dead into the spirit world. During agricultural or other ceremonies. However, maiden spirits appear to aid in watching over the living and to promote abundant harvests, fertility, and general prosperity. Maiden spirits are light-hearted in contrast to more menacing spirits of the Igbo world. W

Igbo aghogho Maiden spirit Mask, African Tribal Creations, art, Nigeria, mmo Ibo
An African Tribal Creations gallery Igbo'aghogho' Maiden Spirit Mask A massive ethnic group numbering between eight and ten million strong. In the southeastern portion of Nigeria, the Igbo are as artistically prolific as any on the African continent. Though mainly merchants and farmers today, supplementary and interspersed hunting and fishing does provide for many families. The lack of centralized unification among Igbo people has led to an incredibly diverse series of artistic styles, many of which are based upon a series of fundamental ideals. Though known in the art world primarily for their'Maiden masks' and their beautifully detailed and realistically proportioned figures, the Igbo have a large variety of masks, not all of whose purposes are understood, though many are accepted to represent unspecified spirits of the ... moredead. Most Igbo art is pigmented chalk white, generally with kaolin, as this is the color of ancestors and the deceased. Regional differences in culture and in secret societies are somewhat well defined among the Igbo, and their artforms vary accordingly. Generally danced at funeral ceremonies in bright patchwork clothing. The Maiden mask is believed to be an incarnate spirit of the deceased. They are also utilized during seasonal fertility ceremonies, and are said to embody the ideals of femininity, fertility, and grace. Elaborate hairstyling is common, and is finely detailed in this mask. Scarification marks are ubiquitous among Igbo art, and are clearly present on this piece. This mask is a beautiful example, demonstrating the chalk white color that is traditional for these masks, as well as several other pigments on the coiffure. The coiffure is exquisite, tall and elegant, pigmented as is commonly the case on its nodular terminations. From the ears hang fine Afric

African Igbo / Ibo "Edjo" Warrior Shrine Figure 5' 7" Tall
African Igbo/ Ibo"Edjo" Warrior Shrine Figure 5' 7" Tall African Igbo/Ibo Warrior Shrine Figure Igbo(Ibo) Shrine Figure Nigeria Carved wood. 20th century 66.5 inches tall and 10 inches wide The IBO are one of the largest ethnic groups in southeastern Nigeria. Shrine figures like this are called alusi or edjo and represent tutelary deities and ancestors. The triple line/box design down the chest of this figure tells us the ancestor being worshipped was a high-ranking military male or warrior. Death and afterlife play a large role in the customs& traditions of the Ibo. They believe all living things have two souls(the eternal ego or“maw” and the life force that dies with the body( Nkpuruk-obi) Both entities are karma. Both souls leave with the last breath, the“maw” takes on the form of a ghost, shadow or reflection, therefore ... moreno one wants to walk on a shadow. Some Ibo carry mirrors so that evil spirits will strike it and not their bodies. After death, a ferryman ghost( Asasabu) brings good souls across the river of death to be reincarnated into trees, animals and other living things. Because they believe in and respect the worship of spirits. Funeral ceremonies can take years with feasts, music, plays and pilgrimages. The Ibo believe their ancestors always watch them, and in order to pray to them and have them respond well, they throw food on the ground to feed and appease them. The“Fene Bene” or chief sets out drink and food for ancestors every eight days. It is against tribal law to speak ill of ancestors( Nduen Forbara) The Ibo were receptive to Christianity and education under British colonization and missionary influence. They played a major role in securing Nigerian independence from Britain in 1960. But many Ibo fled to the east, seceded from Nigeria in 1967 and called their government the Republic of Biafra. In 1970, civil war defeated Biafra. See: Herbert M.Cole. Igbo Art: Community and Cosmos, UCLA, 1984 Due to the size of this piece anyone outside the UK could you please contact us

Since they are mostly Muslim, their vessels almost always feature lovely incised decoration, without human images.
