Similar to the Bobo in both their agrarian society. And in their style of mask production, the Bwa are a moderately sized group of people stretching through parts of Burkina Faso and Mali. They exist in something of a caste system, dilineated into three primary male professions; the farmers, the blacksmiths, and the artists. These masks are the products of the latter caste. The majority of Bwa masks are what are considere'plank ... moremasks' masks that are often rather large and flat, often extending laterally, or vertically, or taking a circular form. They are, for the most part, rendered in abstract. Each mask produced by the Bwa people is representative of a spirit of the wilderness encountered by a family elder. An effigy of this spirit is then produced in the form of a mask for the purpose of protection for that elder's family. This beautiful circular spirit mask features a common Bwa theme of alternating geometric patterning. Pigmented with traditional colors of red, black, and white. The spirits features are carved in a traditional form, abstract, but vaguely anthropomorphic. This simplistic round style is reasonably common, and well documented in the pantheon of Bwa masks. It is relatively small for a Bwa mask, but not necessarily small relative to other masks. On the rear facade is a tie-on area where the wearer's face would be secured to the mask via cordage. It displays normal age related markings, including minor dents, scratches, age cracking, etc, which should be considered normal. Sheets of aluminum have been intricately cut out and hand-punched with a circle pattern. Additional hand-incised details have been added. Cut out stars are the main motifs, and are inscribed in the large circles. Aluminum was collected from German and U.S. plane wrecks. The bush cow is a popular subject amongst the Bobo for the masks that they carve; birds often adorning these masks. Cast using the old technique of lost wax. With cut in ornaments and color pigments. Height: 48 cm. In the literature on African art they are often called the Bobo-Fing. But they call themselves Bobo. They number 130,000. They live in eastern Burkina Faso, and also in Mali. They are farmers. The major food crops are sorghum, millet, yams, and maize. They grow cotton and peanuts as cash crops. Their lives are regulated by a council of elders. The notion of having a chief is profoundly foreign to them and they consider it to be dangerous- as waging a severe attack on the order of things as established by the god. During and after WWII, the metal was melted and re-used in the same traditional way of brass and bronze casting. Created using the lost wax method that involves creating a model in beeswax. Tribal used Large Very Old and Rare African mask from the Bobo. Burkina Faso. This type of mask is used in initiation ceremonies. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With cut in ornaments and color pigments. Height: 43 cm. In the literature on African art they are often called the Bobo-Fing. But they call themselves Bobo. They number 130,000. They live in eastern Burkina Faso, and also in Mali. They are farmers. The major food crops are sorghum, millet, yams, and maize. They grow cotton and peanuts as cash crops. Their lives are regulated by a council of elders. The notion of having a chief is profoundly foreign to them and they consider it to be dangerous- as waging a severe attack on the order of things as established by the god. The Bobo god, creator of earth and animals, is Wuro, who formed the world from a ball of mud. The first ... moreman created was a blacksmith. Dwo, a son of the Wuro was responsible for helping humankind. The blacksmiths were the priests of Dwo worship. Spirits of the bush and ancestors received sacrifices. Dwo was the intermediary between humankind and the creator; masks are the mainstay of tradition and their meaning was revealed to young boys during their initiation period. Living in a region of dry savannas where harvests depend on rainfall. The Bobo instituted a series of purification rituals in order to reconcile themselves with nature. Since it is proper to make amends for the errors of humankind, masks have the essential function of erasing evil and reinstating the God-given balance between sun, earth, and rain. At the end of the dry season and before the work of cultivation begins, purification ceremonies take place, using masks of leaves, of fiber and wood, which may represent Dwo or protective spirits: warthog, male buffalo with flat horns, rooster with its crest standing perpendicular to its face. A appealing pair of tall. Approx. 17" African or African-style bookends acquired at an estate liquidation. Bookends are not identical(reverse or mirror images) and can be used or displayed individually. They do complement one another nicely. Though, and work perfectly, especially with XL and/or tall books that are often problematic in shelves or on desktops. The bottoms of these bookends have a cork underlayment to protect furniture surfaces and prevent slippage. They are lightweight. The pair totaling no more than 2.5 to 3 lbs. My guess is that the bookends are faux African rather than authentic African tribal pieces. But I am no expert on the subject and make no guarantees either way.
