There they publicly perform the dances and songsthey have learned in the bush, and receive small presents from spectators. After a ritual bath that signals the end of their animal life, the new initiates become“Jo children. Initially the ntomo was a society for uncircumcised boys. Its imposing shape and its worn surface make this piece desirable! The Marka, living in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso are neighbors of the Bamana. Today they are heavily Islamised, however they often retain the use of masks and figures for ceremonies and rituals closely related to the Bamana. Stand is for illustration. AFRICAN ART BAMBARA MARCA 18" WOOD and METAL MASK from MALI AFRICA_Collectible!
Read more about the culture behind these masks by visiting the website Zyama(dot com) An excerpt from this site appears below. This seller is not affiliated with the operator of the Zyama site. The Bambara numbering 2.500.000 million form the largest ethnic group within Mali. The triangle of the Bambara region, divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The dry savanna permits no more than a subsistence economy, and the soil produces, with some difficulty, corn, millet, sorghum, rice, and beans. Their traditions include six male societies, each with its own type of mask. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with their symbolic death and their rebirth. Nearly every Bambara man had to pass through these societies in succession, until, upon reaching the highest ... morerank, he had acquired a comprehensive knowledge of ancestral traditions. The jo society has become a sort of framework for other initiation society. Until a few decades ago. Initiation was obligatory for every young man. Jo initiations take place every seven years, after candidates receive six years of special training. During this time, the young men go through a ritual death and live one week in the bush before returning to the village. There they publicly perform the dances and songsthey have learned in the bush, and receive small presents from spectators. After a ritual bath that signals the end of their animal life, the new initiates become“Jo children. Initially the ntomo was a society for uncircumcised boys. Today it closely resembles various Western associations in its bureaucratic structure and its administrative and membership fees. There are two main style groups of their masks. One is characterized by an oval face with four to ten horns in a row on top like a comb. Often covered with cowries or dried red berries. The other type has a ridged nose, a protruding mouth, a superstructure of vertical horns, in the middle of which or in front of which is a standing fi

The N'tomo society is one of six semi-secret societies in the culture of the Bambara ethnic group. It is associated with uncircumcised boys. And their initiation into Bambara society. Worn by village elders, the N'tomo masks generally have very small, narrow mouths, intended to encourage silence among the young initiates, as the primary role of the N'tomo is to instruct the young boys in the basics of Bambara society. It emphasizes ... morediscipline, an important virtue before graduating into the Koré and other societies. The masks generally display an ovoid and anthropomorphic face, with a broad row of horns across the top, with a figure occasionally extending from the mask's forehead. This N'tomo mask is a fine example. With a'forehead' embellishment of the Chi Wara, a mythological antelope-inspired creature for which the Bambara are known. It is a characteristic mask of the style, bearing a wide row of horns in front of which is the antelope effigy. The eye holes are prominent and circular, congruent with most masks produced by the Bambara, and its stylistic design, as with many in the genre, is intended to blend elements of mankind and other animal species together into one piece. This mask is finely detailed, and in quite good condition given its age. The piece does not appear to have undergone any notable breaks or repairs. The wood displays rub, scratch, and wear marks that indicate signs of age. This mask is light in weight despite and has a reasonably large superstructure. This is an interesting piece that will compliment any fine West African collection! Dimensions are 24&quo

AFRICAN BAMBARA CHI WARA TCHIWARA HEADDRESS MASK MALI WILMINGTON COLLECTION
Bambara Tchi Wara(or Tji-Wara. Chi Wara) Antelope Headdress- Mali Early-Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Metal, cloth, leather, cowrie shell, pigment, patina Length 60.9cm( 24in) Property from a Wilmington Collection in Delaware Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. In Africa. Animal imagery is used to teach moral and historical lessons. Distinctive physical or behavioral traits may be combined to create mythical creatures with greater powers. These Bamana crest masks combine the horns of the antelope, the body of the aardvark and the textured skin of the pangolin-all animals that dig in the earth. Despite regional stylistic differences, they all represent Chi Wara, the supernatural being who taught people to farm. Young men wear paired male and female masks in dances ... morethat praise and encourage good farmers. However, because of the introduction of the yoked plow, conversion to Islam and changes in patterns of employment and schooling, the performances have become increasingly more of a popular entertainment than an initiation society ceremony. This wonderful Chi Wara headdress was acquired from a Wilmington collector who amassed a large collection West African materials. Appropriate of age, origin and medium. Check out my store 10% of store profits go to aid victims of human trafficking If you have any questions ... moreplease ask Thanks for looking! Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece to get hollow wood cells. This is factual and not a guess. Even with Dogon. Jim's experience

African Bambara Wood & Metal Tribal Mask
This wood& copper mask is a one of a kind mask. Hand made by the artists of West Africa. This is a Bambara mask from Mali. The Bambara people are agrarian and regard the antelope as the ideal animal and the mythical being that taught men to farm. Therefore. Antelope horns such as these feature commonly on their masks. Also common in their masks are the dried red berries at the tips of the horns. On this masks such is represented by the red pigmentation on the tips of the three hair strands falling across the face. This particular mask falls in one of two classes of ntomo masks. The ntomo society was for uncircumcised boys and towards their training to become men in the society. There are expected to meditate on the virtues of ntomo masks. This kind of ntomo mask bears an oval face with a ridged nose and thin protruding mouth. The mouth ... moreis meant to teach the importance of silence and the virtue of restraint in speech. It is only after the discipline taught by this mask is learnt that boys are allowed to proceed to the next level where they are intimated with the secret knowledge of the tribe. I acquired this mask at an estate auction where there were many. Many authentic African masks and spears. Through my research, I found one almost identical to this one I have up for your consideration, and that is where I got the above information on the tribe and it's rituals. I can not guarantee anything, but you be the judge looking at my photos. It measures 10.5" X 4.5" Posted with

Chiwaras Mali et female, African Bambara du Mali tribal mask.
A Chiwara(also Chi wara. Ci Wara, or Tyi Wara; Bambara: ciwara; French: tchiwara) is a ritual object representing an antelope, used by the Bambara ethnic group in Mali. The Chiwara initiation society uses Chiwara masks, as well as dances and rituals associated primarily with agriculture, to teach young Bamana men social values as well as agricultural techniques.Chiwara masks are categorized in three ways: horizontal, vertical, or abstract. In addition, Chiwara can be either male or female. Female Chiwara masks are denoted by the presence of a baby antelope and straight horns. Male Chiwara masks have bent horns and a phallus. The sex of a Chiwara mask is much clearer on horizontal and vertical masks while abstract masks tend to be difficult to classify. The designs of the Chiwara vary by region and time produced. The Chiwara is one of the icons ... moreof what Europeans call primitive art.Picasso, Braque, and Les Fauves became fascinated with African sculpture and masks in general and the Chiwara figures in particular. This Chiwara is not wood. It was cast in resin. It is a beautiful reproduction and very sturdy. At first sight it is difficult to tell that it is not wood, other than the dark gray color. Dimension: it stand tall little over 2 feet(27.8 inch) wide 6inch, weight:1.5 lb

Exquiste Bambara Ntomo Ceremonial Mask With Aluminum Sheeting, Mali
French researchers in the 20th century were fascinated by the complexity of Ntomo. Under this mask boys in training re-enacted the creation of the world. The figures and the number of horns are intended to“reveal the inner life of the human being” and symbolized important principles; four referred to femininity, three was a male number and seven was the number of the couple. The female figure was also described as a reference to sacred history, primordial man in his androgynous state and a reminder to boys of the training they had received concerning the opposite sex. Ntomo gathers pre-pubescent boys, separates them from their families, organizes them into age grades, and conducts training that culminates with their ritual circumcision. This outstanding mask measures 25" in length by 9 1/2" at width. Materials: wood. Aluminum sheeting ... more3c0.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Feog4d71f%2B%3E3c0-1421d0195cd-0xfb-

The Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. Over seventy anthropomorphic and zoomorphic mask types have been recorded among the Dogon. The masks evoke the form of animals associated with their mythology. Yet their significance in many cases is understood only by the highest ranking cult members whose role is to explain the meaning of each mask. Very Rare Bambara N'tomo Ceremonial Mid Century Mask
Authentic Bambara N'tomo Ceremonial Mid Century Mask. Circa 1950 Background: The Bambara are a large Mande racial group located mostly in the country of Mali. They are the largest and most dominant group in that country. Across the border in Mauritania. There are about 1000 Bambara living near the town of Timbedra. The Bambara live in the middle valley of the Niger River. Even though most Bambara claim to be Muslim. Many people still follow their traditional beliefs in ancestor worship. The Bambara trust that the ancestral spirits may take on the forms of animals or even vegetables. In extraordinary ceremonies, the spirits are worshipped and presented with offerings of flour and water. The oldest member of a lineage act as the"mediator" between the living and the dead. quoted from africaguide.com) The Mask: as per randafricanart.com) ... moreThis Bambara Ntomo mask and others were worn by boys as they passed through the early cycle of initiation into manhood. The masks reinforce the lessons the boys are taught as they are prepared by elder males in the society for circumcision. There are two main style groups of their masks. One is characterized by an oval face with four to ten horns in a row on top like a comb. Often covered with cowries or dried red berries. The other type has a ridged nose. A protruding mouth, a superstructure of vertical horns, in the middle of which or in front of which is a standing figure or an animal. The ntomo masks with thin mouths underscore the virtue of silence and the importance of controlling one’s speech. During their time in ntomo the boys learn to accept discipline. They do not yet have access to the secret knowledge related to korè and other initiation societies. Members wore a wooden face mask during the initiation festival at harvest time and when begging for rice. Some references state that the number of horns on such masks symbolize a human being's levels of increased knowledge based on the initiation stages. While other references state that Ntomo masks with

African Mask Mali Bambara Tribe Vintage Wood & Tin
For your consideration. This stunning vintage Bambara tribal mask from Mali, Africa. This is carved wood decorated with cut patterns of tin. T he little square mouth represents the virtue of silence and the benefit of controlled speech. This is 24.25" tall and 8" wide at the base of the horns. This would project 5.25" from the wall. This has overall scuffs and the two outer horns on the right side have cracks in them but they are very firm. See pics. I'm pretty sure this used to have some earrings, lost now. There are two holes on the back for wiring to hang, but the holes on the other side of the mask have worn through, but you could easily use an eye-hook to hang it up. I love this mask. It makes me think of a primitive robot! This is an older mask. Possibly antique, but to err on the side of caution I'll just say ... moreit's vintage. My guess is 1940's if not older. I offer combined and a lot of FREE shipping in my Ebay store Throngandpageant. So be sure to check it out for more masks, antiques, home décor and hundreds of other items! It is my goal to bring you the most positive shopping experience that can be had. Shop here with confidence! Additional information about anything in my store is always welcomed and MUCH appreciated.
