This axe has a lovely thick forged axe head with forge rolled upper and lower edges, nice crisp beveled cutting edge and geometric designs and piercings to the main portion of the blade. The entire shaft is covered in Waran(monitor lizard) skin that remains in excellent condition with a few small losses an tearing where the skin used to be stiched toghether- due to the natural shrinking(see the pics) These axes are both a symbol of prestige and also used as currency. Antique North African Tribal Arm Dagger I would guess late 1800s early 1900s. Hard to tell since I'm not an expert. My estimation is based simply on other items from the same estate which I am able to accurately date. Blade has some very interesting tribal markings. Leather and wire wrapped grip. Overall. Nice old antique South African axe which shows a lot of age and character. The handle is wood. With a lovely glossy patina that has some hard use. There are some chips and splits to the wood and the wood has broken away where the axe handle goes into the head. This happened a long time ago as the wood revealed from the break shows some patina. This causes the head to not remain in the head of the shaft. The steel axe head has a wonderful dark patina. A nice African axe being offered at a very low opening price. The swords case is in excellent condition with many animal hairs including monkey and many skins and bones(please see pictures) The hilt is made from Antler horn and the verdabrea is aligator. Out of an old family estate. This is a rare 1800s Zulu spear. It was made for a prince around 10 yrs old. The head is hand hammered and still has some edge to it. Antique African Sword and Axe Interesting African weapons/tools. The sword is made from iron with a wood handle wrapped with metal. I'm thinking copper. The handle of the axe is nicely carved. Although I'm not sure what it's made from. The sword measures 21.5 inches by 3.25 inches. The axe measures 15 inches by 7.5 inches. I bought both at an auction recently. An outstanding and very rare find. Circa 1700-1800 antique cast bronze sword attributed to west Africa. Possibly of Tuareg origins. Outstanding craftsmanship and detail and excellent patina. See a very similar example at the following site: The sword is in excellent condition. With only very minimal patina/oxidation. The scabbard has additional green patina. In a couple of small places the oxidation has gone all the way through some of the ornaments(pay particular attention to the shadow cast by the scabbard) but frankly we think this just adds to the great character of the piece. It is rock solid and the blade fits snugly into the scabbard. The entire piece is an impressive 29 inches long. The sword is 25 inches and the scabbard is 17 inches. Antique African Executioner Sword
Hi. This is a wonderful and rare piece! I acquired this sword through a private auction that had several african rarities, but this one was by far the most unique and rare! It measures 27" from top to bottom. This Ngulu sword is estimated to have been made in the 1800's and was used for ceremonial executions. These are extremely rare especially with an ivory/bone handle, indicating greater importance. It's most unique aspect is it's handle. The handle was hand carved and is supposedly made of ivory, but I can only guarantee that it's bone or ivory. It depicts a tiki-like figure, most likely an African god. The blade part of it is also quite cool. It has several etchings on it that are described in the photos. Interestingly the blade shows no rust and is only a little dull.
