Possibly older example of the famous"Gunyege" or"Zakpei" racing masks of the Dan. It is possible that the bells and fabric below the mouth are a fairly recent addition. These so-called"racing" masks were historically used in a serious game of chase, where the runner being chased, the mask-wearer, would be beaten if caught. The roles would then be reversed, and the captor would don the mask and, in turn, be chased. These games continue today, but are now forms of entertainment, and actual violence is rare. The Dan have produced an enormous pantheon of masks. Many of them of very high quality, much to the delight of collectors around the world. Considering their sheer quantity, the number of masterpieces is astounding. The Dan. Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative ... moreof spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated from the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. A common form of mask among the Dan people. The"passport" mask, as it is referred to by western cultures, was often carried by those traveling away from their village, and they were said to offer protection during such times. The masks could also be used to bear as a witness during an initiation ceremony. Often carried on the small of the back, these masks rarely exceeded ten inches in length. This passport mask is a very common form, featuring the typical bulged forehead, narrowed eyes, pursed lips, and dark patina. Its exterior displays very few tooling marks, and the interior is, as is usually the case, more roughly rendered. It s

African Dan, We, Kran (Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire) Koagle,Monkey,Chimpanzee Mask
Koagle(Monkey. Chimpanzee) mask from the We or Kran people of the Dan region of Liberia or the Cote d' Ivoire. 6" H. Carved in traditional simple style with prominent forehead, sunken eyes, and protruding, open mouth. Masks of this type were once used to incite agressive behavior in men about to go into battle. They were later used. And are used today to to teach good behaviour as the animalistic behaviour of the dancers wearing these mask parallels the unpredictble actions of the ape while they dance and act wildly, chaotically, and irresponsibly. Mask appears to have some age and patina to it. And the African trader I bought it from said it was a slightly older, maybe a mid-late 20th century piece. gsrx_vers_474(GS 6.4.2(474)

Entertainer or instructor, messenger etc. It could be associated with warfare as a war stopper. Masks like this are referred to as spirits and could have danced at sacrifice to ancestral spirits. Today. Like most masks still being produced in this territory, Dan masks are used primarily for the entertainment of both villagers and tourists. see"Masks in Dan Villages”. African Arts, II. No. 2, 1978. pp. 16-23, 94. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukis

Who are also known by the name Yacouba, live in the western part of the Cote I'voire and into Liberia where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. They make their living from farming cocoa, rice and manioc. Before unifying secret societies were set up at the turn of the century, each Dan village was an autonomous socio-political unit governed by a chief elected on the base of his wealth and social position. Today, the leopard society acts as a major regulator of Dan life and initiates young men during ... moretheir isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. Dan people have achieved notoriety in the area for their entertainment festivals, which were historically village ceremonies, but today are performed largely for tourists. During these festivals, masked performers dance on stilts.

Masks are owned by families and used by individual lineage members in contexts of social control. Boy’s circumcision camps, and entertainment. Most We masks were created to frighten with the gaping jaws and tubular eyes. The style of these forest living people differ from the sophisticated, gentle and often refined art of the neighboring savanna-dwellers. We people produce a variety of masks often characterized by enlarged triangular nose, an open mouth and tubular eyes. Modern ethnology puts the Wobe and Guere together under the name We. Despite the fact that the people ... morethemselves use the old names. The We population is estimated at 100,000. Rice, yams, taro, manioc, maize, and bananas are the primary crops grown. African tribal Dan passport mask Cote d'Ivoire ethnographic art, home decor 15
The Dan tribe of the Ivory Coast called the miniature masks passport masks because of their size and variety of uses. They are masks of initiated adult men that would be carried with them or kept on personal shrines in their home. They mark the passage as an initiate into the men's secret society and his attaining a higher rank. At the suggestion of diviners small masks would be given to children to wear to ward off evil or cure illness. Men carried small“passport” masks in leather pouches when they traveled as a form of identification. This mask is thought to be around 50 years old and measures 5” X 2+”

Large African Dan Tribal Mask with Cowrie Shells 18 iches high
Please bear with me as I know little about African Tribal Masks but have been commissioned to sell this and many other items that belonged to my Father inlaw. From what I have learned this is of Dan Tribe origin with Cowrie Shells. This mask is 18" high. 11" wide and 10" deep. It is put together with some copper wire and woven string and rope. It appears that it was meant to hang from the ceiling or pole. Possibly a wall but it is almost a complete head rather than a mask. The black decorations at the end of the braids appear to be seed pods broken in half. The face is wood and the back is some sort of burlap. If you can school me on the specifics of this piece, please do. I really do not know what the value is. Thank you.
AFRICAN ART CARVED WOOD DAN BEAK MASK
Masks of the Dan and neighboring peoples of Liberia and Ivory Coast served many purposes in both sacred and non- sacred contexts in village life. Many masks were made to use in the Poro initiatory society in Liberia. The basic function of the institution being the initiation of youths into manhood, and to utilize masks to frighten the uninitiated. Very good and excellent condition. A nice piece to add in your african collections. The measurement is 15 inches high x 6 1/2 inches wide. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp*a4%601gc%3E-13ef3b7f875-0xf5-

Michaela GREBO"Grebo" means"leaping monkey people. a reference to their flight from a former homeland near the Sahara. Their major economic activity is producing palm oil and palm kernels for export. The culture of the Grebo. A little-known ethnic group inhabiting the coastal region of eastern Liberia and the bordering forestlands, was shaped in a considerable degree by their neighbors to the north, the Kran and Dan. Unlike the other people living in Liberia, and Cote D'Ivoire the Grebo are not structured by the Poro society. They are ruled by a chief known as bodio who lives in near total isolation and also assumed the function of grand priest. The Grebo sculpt several types of masks. The masks appeared during rituals reserved for initiates and at the time of festive occasions. When the whole population was able to see them. The war masks designed primarily to terrify, appeared during battles, in the dances beforehand, and at the funerals of warriors. Figures are rare. Their style is closely related to Dan. We and other neighboring tribes.
