Dogon Granary Door, Mali, African Tribal Creations, art, nommo, ancestor, Dogo
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Despite loads of beautiful sculpture. The Dogon people of Mali continue to be most famous for their elegantly carved doors, some of which can be truly spectacular in size and detail. The Dogon live in an arid region near the Niger river, backed by huge cliffs, a spot chosen for defensive reasons due to the regional tension created by their refusal to convert to Islam. Due to this relative isolation, they have been able to maintain their artistic traditions over the years despite the pressures of encroaching Islamic culture. At nearly half a million people, the Dogon were once primarily hunters, but have taken up agriculture over time to support their growing numbers. Millet and other crops are painstakingly raised on their arid fields and stored ... morein granaries generally connected to or very proximal to their homes. An incredibly artistic people, many functional objects around their homes are embellished in fantastic fashion, the most famous of which, are their incredible doors. There are two common door types used by the Dogon. That for their home itself, and that for their granary, the grain storage structure wherein their food stores are kept. The symbolic figures adorning it can be ancestors, supernatural beings, even breasts(a symbol of fertility) and are generally intended to keep the entrance sealed from intruders, thieves, and animal pests. This granary sized door is beautifully carved to feature numerous protective ancestral figures, as well as several dimensional geometric shapes. As is commonly the case, it is heavy for its size and sturdily constructed. The piece is in good overall condition, having only minor age-related cracking, and markings, which should be considered normal. It is otherwise free from serious breaks or repairs. The hinges seem to have minimal wear due to the fact that glass bottles are often cemented into the wall construction and used as a point of articulation for the door hinges. Th

RARE Old AFRICAN DOGON Granary Carved DOOR with Alligators non mask
You are bidding on a very nice and rare African Dogon Granary Carved Door. I haven't ran across many of these this nice. We have been collecting masks and items for many years. And have purchased most of them from two different people. One has a well known gallery and sells on ebay, the other one is a couple who went to Africa every year and brought thousands of dollars in African Art home with them and gave us first option at them in most cases. You will see with the different masks we list that they really stand out and not ordinary masks. Beautiful pieces that will look nice in your home. We did not plan on having to downsize and sell most our art, so we DON'T have much INFO if any on these. I will list them as where I BELIEVE they came from but IT IS ONLY MY OPINION. Again, they are very nice pieces. This one we believe came from ... moreD R Congo. Please bid on them for the beauty in the art and how well it is carved! It Measures approximately 28" long x 16" wide x 1.5" deep. Good Luck and Happy Biddings! PAYPAL and USA ONLY!
Wooden Dogon Granary Door from Mali-Intact Lock w Latch
I am slowly downsizing a large collection of artifacts acquired through many years of travel and a fascination with tribal cultures. Have decided that I can't keep going to auctions( which I love to do) unless I first pass on a few items to someone else! This delightful Dogon door has been recently taken off the wall to make way for a new piece of art. Have owned it since 1974 but cannot determine its exact age. I would conservatively say'mid 20th century' but it could very well be older. Constructed of 3 carved hardwood panels held together by strips of the same wood at the top and bottom and very large staple like flat iron nails. Measures 27" 69 cm. x 19" 48 cm. The latch-a significant feature of Dogon granary doors- is intact. Has a very appealing dark reddish patina. Bears all the stylistic markings of Dogon doors ... morethat some say were traditionally made by fathers to accompany their daughters as they moved from puberty into adulthood. Hence. The female'breasts' represented along the right hand side. Others have told me that they had a less ritualistic function and were simply carved to protect the window like opening into each family's grain storage. Primordial beings, ancestor figures, sun lizards and scenes of daily life symbolically serving to protect the entrance. For example, t he zig zag elements along the vertical sides are said to represent the Dogon serpent ancestor. Whatever their anthropological origins. Dogon granary doors are an excellent example of why traditional African artifacts are as interesting to artists as they are to collectors and students of history. There is an inherent modernism to them that is stylistically appealing. I know, because I had this one on my wall for many years and it generated many, many comments. Please note that this door is not light. Hence the shipping charge of $22.00 which applies to Continental North America only! I will ship worldwide but if bidding from overseas and you are concerned about prohibitive shipping costs please mes

Mali: Rare nice old Tribal used African Dogon Granary Door.
Mali: Rare and old Tribal used African Dogon Door. Height: 30 cm x 25 cm. The Dogon inhabit the large austere Bandiagara plateau. With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. At first hunters, they now cultivate their staple diet millet. And also sorghum, and wheat on the cliff tops, which they have had to convert due to the scarcity of water sources. The Dogon are among African cultures that have remained closest to their ancestral traditions. One such tradition is building granaries and houses for grain storage. Doors of these granaries are often adorned with impressive carvings of animals or people which serve as invocations of deities or spirits. Or as symbols of status. The stored grain is considered"safe" when it is guarded by the ancestors whose images are depicted on granary doors.

Dogon figurative granary "ta koguru" door lock figure Mali - no reserve
Very nice Dogon granary door lock(called to koguru) with a couple of nommo figures. These symbolize strong magical and spiritual forces. Carved from VERY hard and dense wood- in addition to the two figures is a criss cross design. The patina is aged and attractive. The transverse has been broken and glued on the underside of the right side facing. This is a great door lock with wonderful a patina. AFRICAN DOGON MALI CARVED WOOD GRANARY DOOR ANIMAL & HUMAN FIGURES A+ CONDITIO
I recently acquired a number of ethnographic items from a now deceased artist collector who purchased a variety from around the world. Mostly in the 50's-70's. This is the only granary door he had, and it is in fine condition and a good example of this type. It measures about 25" x 18" not including the extended swivel points. The push out latch is intact and functions well. The photos seem to represent it nicely.great condition, nice natural luster, no damage. As expected as the years pass the wood does dry across the grain so there is some separation between the separate pieces of wood. Check out my! Be sure to add me to your! This is an older Dogon people door. Mali, African that was acquired by an artist collector sometime between the mid 1950's and early 1990's. Dogon granary door, African tribal art depictions of Nommo and Kanaga masks
A vintage/antique DOGON Granary door. A traditional granary door from the central plateau of Mali. Some background. That after researching revealed some fascinating aspects behind this piece of important tribal art. The Dogon migrated into the depths of the Bandiagara escarpment escaping Islam and the slave traders that predated upon them. There exist about 500,000 individuals on the 100 mile long sandstone cliffs. They are known for extraordinary astrological knowledge. Which some have put forward could only come from extra-terrestrials. They celebrate the 60 year orbit of Sirius by'Sirius B' the problem being; is how could they know about a white dwarf that is invisible to the eye and only relatively recently discovered by modern astronomers. It seems that they have also predicted the presence of a Sirius C, which at the moment ... morehas not been definitively discovered but there is some evidence it may exist. There is a mass of further information and anthropological research available on this area. Including a BBC documentary by Griff Rhys Jones, on Dogon carvings. Significantly. My interpretation of the carvings on this door are: The two characters in the middle bottom half are the Nummo twins. The key spiritual figures linked with the origins of the Dogon and the sun lizards either side are one of the ways the Nummo can often be seen depicted. In the top half of the panel are twins with the Kanaga masks fused and on the right a single individual wearing a Kanaga mask. The mask with points aligned both vertical downwards and upwards represent man as the axis of the world with the points illustrating the earth and the sky respectively. On the right are two breasts. Or they could be the two Sirius stars. Dogon huts tended to be either owned by the Man- for granary use, the woman would have her own hut(with door) where she would keep her possesions. The central star shape could be Sirius. One of the focal points of Dogon culture. It has been hugely educative and rewarding learning about this door. The above i

ANTIQUE 19th C. AFRICAN DOGON TRIBE MALI GRANARY WOOD DOOR GALLERY QUALITY
For sale is an antique African granary door from the Dogon tribe of Mali. These doors protected the window like opening into each family`s grain storage building so a small amount of food could be taken out. These granaries are seen as symbols of abundance. Security and wealth, and are decorated with images that protect the food stored inside. Granaries dominated the domestic space of the courtyard and occupied an important place in the family compound. This particular door has a high relief carving of female fertility figures which are there to protect the contents. The door consists of two panels that are stapled together. It is 25 X 19 inches(depth approx 2 1/2" and in very good condition for it`s age. This is a very old door as is seen by the simpler design: It is also heavier than the new ones and does not have a latch, instead ... morethe doors were used as shutters. This look is seen in Dogon doors from the mid 19th c. The old doors are very hard to find and would make a great addition to any African art collection. Thank you for looking and please browse my store. PS some of the photos were taken when sunny which accounts for the light differences.
Mossi Figural Granary Door Burkina Faso African
Title, Mossi Figural Granary Door Burkina Faso African, Type of Object, Door, Country of Origin, Burkina Faso, People, Mossi, Materials, Wood. Metal, pigment, Approximate Age, second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 25.5 inches H. x 10 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, wear. Shallow cracks, Additional Information: Wooden door decorated with a figure standing on a liizard. A carved snake is placed above the standing figure. The Mossi are today the largest single group living in Burkina Faso. They originated from horsemen who made their way north from present day Ghana during the 1500's. The Mossi are renowned for their masquerades and the use of large superbly sculpted and brightly painted masks and colorful costumes. Mossi elders are honored with elaborate funerals and the appearance of masked dancers with masks representing ... moreancestors and various spirits and forces of Nature in dramatic and often vigorous dances. This carving was used as a door for granaries. As subsistence farmers they depend upon the food they produce to live. Storing it in granaries made of mud with thatched roofs and carved doors providing access to the foodstuffs held in the granary. Numerous granaries attest not only to the need to store food but equally reflect family structures as each wife will have her own granary where personal objects as well as family shrines are kept. Openings into the granary were sealed by carved doors or panels. Figures of humans. Animals or of symbolic motifs were carved in relief onto the surface of the door, and sometimes into the locks. Most Mossi carvings of humans refer to the primordial ancestors who brought humankind to earth and who were the first farmers and blacksmiths. Dogon Granary Door, Mali, African art, Dogo Burkina Faso wood Nommo Habbe kibisi
0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Despite loads of beautiful sculpture. An incredibly artistic people, many functional objects around their homes are embellished in this fantastic fashion. There are two common door types used by the Dogon. That for their home itself, and that for their granary, the grain storage structure wherein their food stores are kept. The symbolic figures adorning it can be ancestors, supernatural beings(Nommos) even breasts(a symbol of fertility) and are generally intended to keep ... morethe entrance sealed from intruders. This door was produced from two separate pieces, fused in the center by metal fasteners, and is slightly folded as a result. The latch is in excellent shape and still fully functional(these are often broken in many of these doors that make it stateside) as are both hinge points, which are often placed into the earthen walls utilizing bottlenecks to provide a smooth hinge action. Some insect damage exists on the backside, which has been long-since arrested, and two mounting screws have been placed and a wire attached for hanging the piece. This is a nice Dogon door that appears to have relatively extensive age on it. A really nice piece already prepared for display. The mask's dimensions are 17.5" x 12" x 1" Medium: Wood. Metal(fasteners) We cannot offer a 100% guarantee of any mask's traditional use unless stated in the auction. This piece displays strong signs. And we do know for a fact that it originated in West Africa, but we don't have an exact provenance on the piece. STAND NOT INCLUDED IN SALE.
