A rather small ethnic group located in Cote d'Ivoire(Ivory Coast) Between the Baule and Guro people, the Yohure are heavily influenced religously, culturally, and artistically by their much larger neighbors. Despite these influences, however, the Yohure have a strong sense of cultural identity, and have developed an exquisite artistic style that is most prominently featured in their breathtaking masks. Generally human in appearance, often with elements of animals incorporated, the masks are generally associated with their use in funerary ceremonies, and are intended both to guide the spirits of the deceased into the afterlife, as well as to help restore social order in the event that a death greatly upsets the community. Considered spiritual emblems, the masks are said to be quite dangerous, as the yu spirits they represent are known to be capable of harming humans. As such. They must be handled with the utmost care. Because of this association with death, women are not only not allowed to participate in dances with these masks, but are not generally allowed to view them at all. The Yohure believe that this proximity to death can cause a woman to lose her fertility, an unthinkable prospect in many African cultures. This gorgeous Yohure mask displays many of the common traits that make them so lauded and desirable. The coiffure is elegantly rendered. Featuring an animal motif, in this case a crocodile(some would say lizard) The Baule influences can easily be seen in the facial details, and like many masks of West Africa, identifying scarification marks are represented on the piece. The eyelids are pigmented as well, and the mask be

Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative of spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated from the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. A common form of mask among the Dan people. The"passport" mask, as it is referred to by western cultures, was often carried by those traveling away from their village, and they were said to offer protection during such times. The masks could also be used to bear as a witness during an initiation ceremony. Often carried on the small of the back, these masks rarely exceeded ten inches in length. This passport mask is a very common form, featuring the typical bulged forehead, narrowed eyes, pursed lips, and dark patina. Its exterior displays very few tooling marks, and the interior is, as is usually the case, more roughly rendered. It s

The People’s Republic of the Congo and into Gabon. Teke artistic activities are directed primarily to the carving of figures intended to have magical substances. Known as Bonga, attached to them. Often called ‘fetishes’ in the West these powerful figures have different titles according to their purpose and who owns them. For example figures known as Matomba prevent and cure illnesses and other figures identified as nkira ntswo, represent ancestors and were used during a ritual to propitiate nature spirits. Figures are not considered complete or powerful until given energy through the application of the magical substances into the stomach cavity, or placed as a ball around the figure. Teke figures are magically'switched on’ by the ngaa, the local ritual specialist after which they will be addressed and given offerings that through time add to the power that the figure contains. The facial scarification of vertical lines known as mabina are used by a number of the smaller subgroups such as the Mfinu or the Yanzi who share similar sculptural styles with the Teke. This figure male figure does not have magical materials attached to it’s body, but it has been covered with the red powder which has also magical attributes.
