Antique French Rural Chic Fire Fender ~ Black with Brass ~ Cast Iron Foxes !
An unusual and very charming antique French fire fender. Dating from the early 1900s. with a black metal front topped with a brass rail and with hollow cast iron ends. each featuring a fox atop a decorative stand with swirly brass ornament. Although at first glance it seems the foxes are from the same mould. They are in fact different sculptures. with different body shapes and stances and on different backgrounds. A delightful detail. So as to fit a variety of fireplace widths. The fender extends by means of two bars and turn screws on the back and measures 70cm when closed and 87cm when at full width. It stands 11.5 cm high to the fox’s back. The brass knobs can also be moved towards the ends of the brass rail by unscrewing two tiny bolts at the back and rescrewing through two more holes in the base. I have done this to see which looks the ... morebetter. and I think it looks best with the rail extending a little as in the photos. A old piece. This is in nice vintage and functional condition although it does show signs of its history as is to be expected.The brass rail is very slightly bent upwards with a one or two dents and scratches in places.and the seam at the back is not fully closed all the way along. although this cannot be seen when in use. DETAILS* These are a Lovely pair of Cahill Ironworks cast iron andirons with bronze and brass finish. They are is hand hammered. They are marked Cahill in diamond pattern and also have the number 82 on the back. I ... morebelieve the ANDIRONS are circa 1900, super Mission or Art& Crafts design, beautiful. Iron Cross like pattern decorates the base and moveable decorative handle of each piece. Cahills Architectural Brass and Iron Works was an ironwork's company out of Chattanooga, Tn. which was in operation from 1875 to 1922. They are 18 1/2 tall and 9.50" wide. Total depth is 19" with log holders. The top point and handles are brass finished, they contrast nicely against the bronze finish of the body, beautiful. The log holders are attached with bolt, will remove for packing. They will need to be reattached when you receive them. Easy to do. Finish shows light wear considering their age would consider condition very good, no rust on decorative piece's. Log holders do have light rust from use. There is a crack in the bamboo on the bottom right that is 4 3/4" long& the glass is broken on the edge of the left bottom, there may be some missing small bamboo pieces on the glass edge, making the glass a little loose. You are bidding on an Antique Black& Bronze Color Victorian Tin? Ornate Fireplace Cover or Wall Hanging Decorated with a silhouette. Leaves and bows. The Cover measures about 20 1/2" wide and 15" tall. It has a small knob about 2" in on both sides that measures about 3/4" in diameter. Overall condition is very good. I do not see any breaks. Cracks or chips. It has some age appropriate wear. The back is black and has a wire in place for hanging. This an old piece and it is not perfect but it is very pretty.
