I found these old cast iron dachshund andiron/ firedogs at an estate sale in the far back corner buried in a garage. Great pieces that you won't see too often. They do have some rust and corrosion as you can see in the pictures. One of the dogs has a broken tail. Which is a bummer, but it you wanted to use these that is the end that would be in the fire so you wouldn't notice it. These pieces are very heavy for their size weighing a combined weight of 57lbs. This fantastic display of 19th century German wood work was brought over from Germany by my father in law in the 1920's, one of many items he brought from his home in Germany that are to me one of a kind. This specific mantle trim has gorgeous 19th century floral patterns throughout surrounded with a grand touch of curvaceous trim patterns and spectacular top trim pattern that flows along the upward 2 mountain like points of the top. 1800's STONE FIREPLACE MANTLE HEARTH RUSTIC CABIN LODGE PRIMITIVE ROCK FIRE
Old 1800’s Stone Mantle Hearth This amazing stone mantle(or could be used as a hearth) came out of our 150 year old Kentucky cabin. The hand laid stone fireplace and chimney were a piece of art and I just can’t imagine how they were able to lay the heavy stone to the roof. Much of the stone used in the fireplace was massive as is this beautiful mantle. We’ve used it as a bench for a while but it seems like a waste for it to be used this way. You don’t find old stone mantles like this anymore. Somewhat like the hand hewn beams in the cabin. It also looks like this 1800’s mantle was also hand hewn/carved. The stone is a beautiful white/gray color with a little bit of a rust and darker gray in a few places. You can see on one side of the mantle old soot from years ago. It will likely clean off but I’ve kept it original. I’ve tried to capture ... morethe color in my pictures. Approximate measurements for the mantle are: 56” long. 14” wide on one end. 14.5” wide in the center and 8” wide on the other end. It is very heavy and a handful for two strong men to move. Weighing this beast for shipment is the hard part but the men that moved it estimated 600-700 pounds. We will use that weight when getting a freight estimate. The mantle will be carefully crated and shipped to the buyer in the safest and most economical manner. Please call if you’d like us to check on shipment to your location. The original hand hewn oak beam was reclaimed from an old Kentucky barn and has been cut in half to be used as a mantle or bench top. What is a hand-hewn timber? It’s any long piece of building material that has been transformed from round log to square timber using only hand-held tools. These timbers can then be sawed to different lengths and used as beams. Joists, trusses, posts or fireplace mantles. According to a Penn State University study on historic building techniques, in the American colonial period, most buildings were created with timber frames. Giant solid beams called“girts” ... morewere connected with mortise-and-tenon joints. Nails were a rare and expensive commodity, so they were held together with wooden pegs. Water-powered sawmills were a common feature of colonial life long before America declared independence from England. Fireplace grates were a big advancement on andirons, While andirons could hold large logs and chunks of firewood, a fireplace grate could contain the entire fire, kindling, charcoal, fuel-wood and all, and keep it off the floor of the fireplace, improving airflow! These grates are usually made of iron which was forge-welded together. They varied in size, from smaller, coal-burning grates, to much larger wood-burning grates, which could be several feet wide and several inches deep! This neat. Retrieved from an 1850's Farmhouse that was taken down for new buildings. This auction is for one set of Cast Iron Firedog Andirons- now part of an estate sale. The measurements of the Andirons are 16" height, 19.5" wide outside foot to inside end. They are considered Handcrafted Iron Art from many years ago. These Andirons are heavy and weigh about 28 pounds each. Fireplace décor for colonial home, not just for looks but for keeping the logs off the ground in the fireplace! 1800S FIREPLACE PRIMITIVE BLACKSMITH-FORGED IRON HUGE COOKS TRAMMEL & SWAY CRANE
19TH CENTURY 1800s AMERICAN ANTIQUE FOLK ART PRIMITIVE NEW ENGLAND FIREPLACE/HEARTH BLACKSMITH HAND-FORGED IRON HUGE COOKING(KETTLE-STEWPOT) 4-HOOK TRAMMEL& IRON SWAY-CRANE. This iron cooking trammel has 4 large hooks. It is extremely large being approx. 19.5" tall x 11" wide(at widest measurement) this extra large and thick iron hand-made by Blacksmith iron trammel was either used as a cooking implement hung on the sway crane(fits on end of crane-please see pics) and would have been hung on crane in fireplace with pots for cooking hung on one or more hooks-would have required a large fireplace for this huge sway crane& equally huge iron trammel. This 4-hook iron tool could also have been used to hang& suspend pots& cooking kettles from in the pantry and could be used as a decorative element to do the same-giving ... morethe kitchen a very authentic and primitive rustic architectural element to any kitchen, could also be used to hang herbs today(see pics for original intent given the size and shape of trammel using your own judgement and recognizing size and form of piece) The antique iron trammel is 19th century. It has 4 large hooks, the iron trammel is hand-forged by a Blacksmith as is evidenced by the lovely hand-hammered curved hanging hook at top with its hand pounded letter shaped"S" with a rounded hammered finial at its end(see close-up pic provided)quite lovely and primitive-very folk art New England piece, also the iron shaft where the 4 hooks converge show that it was hammered together and shaped by hand of a New England Blacksmith craftsman-please see the close-up pic provided for your inspection of the shaft& the convergence of the four hooks hand shaped in this crude fashion by the irregular and hand formed method. It is in very good original condition-beautiful original condition with no repairs, no cracks or chips, lightly oiled to feed the iron with an organic natural oil(same oil used on sway crane) The antique Sway Crane is large& heavy and measures approx. 2
