John Bryan Fineart One Of A Kind Hand-carved White Pine Fireplace Mantel
This mantelpiece was created in 1990 from old growth White pine and features hand-carved Atlantic salmon swirling over a colorful redd. Trout lilies and classic featherwing salmon flies. The carvings are hand painted with Grumbacher's artist oil paints. The mantel was originally painted white and used in art shows and exhibitions. The trends at the time were considerably focused on natural woods(cherry and walnut primarily) and for that reason it never found a home, but spawned a number of commissioned pieces in natural woods. It is one of a pair of fly-fishing mantels Bryan created on speculation to use as examples at art shows to demonstrate the possibilities for commissioned pieces. The mantel has been exhibited periodically for various events. But has spent most of the past 25 years stored in a crate in the artist's studio. Bryan ... morestripped the white paint off the mantel recently to create the effect of an old mantel, once painted and now stripped down to the beautiful pumpkin pine. The painted centerpiece, trout lilies and salmon flies were left painted. The result is a wonderfully folky mantelpiece with classic proportions looking for a home after all these years. It has never been installed in a home and thus is offered as'new' It represents a'break out' moment for the artist as one of his unique blends of sporting art and classic architecture. It was featured in a number of publications such as Yankee Magazine. Sports Illustrated, Fly Rod& Reel, and more in the early 90's. Copies of them and it's provenance come with the purchase. Bryan's mantels stand on their own like a piece of furniture. The frieze. Pilasters and entablature are attached to a mortice and tenon framework to allow it to shrink and swell seasonally without cracking.
