A Victorian period fireplace mantel and surround is carved of white marble, and includes a cast iron filigree insert with a golden bronze finish. The hearth. Mantel shelf and keystone are removable, the rest of the surround is mounted permanently to a wooden frame underneath, so this is decorative only, not usable for a fire. Please scroll down under this description for additional views.Late Victorian or Edwardian era decorative cast iron fireplace insert or"summer cover" as many people call them since they were used to cover the black hole of the fireplace opening during the warm months when it was not in use every day. These covers were just another element of pattern and design that helped to keep the room clean and perhaps keep the occasional bird out of the house. 1358" is the design number embossed on the back of this piece which measures 26 3/4" tall. 20" wide. The top center is slightly bowed and has a depth of 1 1/4" The background has a hammered texture and is decorated with swags of ribbon with trailing bellflowers on the ends. The oval cartouche in the center shows a Classically garbed woman playing a pair of twin pipes ... morewhile a cherub dances and another peers over her shoulder. Perhaps she is Euterpe the Greek muse of music. There is very good detail to the casting and it does remind me of a jasperware piece with the raised Classic design. The front has old gold metallic paint that is worn but is not so built up that it blurs the imagery. There is some surface rust on the back that can be wire brushed off. The bottom knob is missing, leaving a little hole where it was mounted. The inside grate is ornate cast iron. very nice condition for 129 years old. The cover is decorated with a crest or shield of some sort. I have not tried to clean in any way as some like that patina you cannot get back once cleaned, the Insert is 30-1/4" tall x 24-1/2 wide& there is a 2" Lip? around except on the bottom which is flush with the floor. the top would need 2" in the wall and bottom 4" If you look at the photo of the back of insert, you can see it is bent in some, very easy to pound out and does not show once installed The unit is 100% complete& original, no repairs I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Antique Victorian Copper-plated Ornate Cast Iron Fireplace Insert COMPLETE
This fireplace is a hard to find complete. Gorgeous, Victorian-era functional Antique- it'd be great for just appearance, installing the surround to seal a no-longer used fireplace, but even better to bring it up to date and put it back in use. Measured at the facing. It's 30 1/2 inches tall and 24 1/2 inches wide; it loses about an inch in height and width behind the facing, of course, in order to fit into the fireplace alcove, and is a foot deep. Echo Grate model#420, with patent assembly date of July 4th, 1898; it's been used as recently as this winter and works well. Looks really nice, especially with the cover on: it's heavy cast iron, copper plated(didn't realize til I started cleaning it- lost some patina, but it comes back in time) and has very ornate art& metal work: note the farm scene on the cover, it's ... morereally well done. As for mechanicals. It has a shaker-style ash basket- there's a handle in the front(see pics) that rotates parts of the grate back& forth, shaking ashes free of the fireplace for easy cleaning below- and two pull knobs that control the dampers for draft, plus sliding window-style air feed in the front of the grill facing. Unfortunately. The piece that runs along the bottom in front of the ash dump snapped in one spot(see pic) it's been repaired and isn't very noticeable, but would look better if properly brazed. Also needs two of the lower sliders repaired, and still has the original firebrick; altogether, just needs enough repair to make it much more affordable that it could be.
