Won these Victorian era andirons and fender at an upscale Antique Auction here in Upstate. NY. I am not particularly good when it comes to identifying metals. I think they are either brass or bronze but not sure. I do know they are large(oversized) and heavy. As shown in photos. Feel free to ask questions. Antique Arts and Crafts Andirons w/Fender, Hand-Hammered Brass over Iron
This is an early 20th C. pair of andirons with matching fender in the Arts& Crafts style. They are made of hand-hammered brass over iron with shield and crest motifs. I have only seen a few sets of similar andirons and they were either for sale in London or had an English attribution. I have not been able to decipher the maker's marks which appear to be a stylized"D" Please see the pictures and perhaps you can provide some insight. Despite their mysterious attribution. They are very well made and required a significant amount of skilled hand work. Each andiron weighs 14.4 lbs and they measure 18.25"H. 10.5"W, 21"D. Their matching fender is 42"W, 12"D, and 7.5"H. I replaced the two fasteners on the fender, and t here are small spots of surface corrosion here and there(please see the pictures) ... moreAdditionally. The right andiron's spit holder spins freely but will remain in place when positioned. The left andirons spit holder was refastened some time ago with a patinated brass screw. This fender has Victorian style garland shapes and roses across the front. No maker's marks except a large"10" on one side and an“11” on the other. Not sure of the age. But I believe it dates from the early 1900’s. The fender with base stands 5" tall and measures approximately 30" wide and 13 1/4" deep at the deepest point and 9 ½” deep on the sides. Metal has scratches and wear consistent with age. Chrome fender pipes are pitted, andirons as well with scratches especially on the bases. Copper or brass is tarnished. Rust to metal legs.
