While leaning on a draped pedestal. Believed to have been made around the time of the centennial of the United States. These have excellent casting and appear to have original log holders. As you can see. They were originally painted an ecru or off white, and the paint has worn from age and use. The painted wear/ flaking is exactly as it should be from andirons that have been used. The paint on George’s head is much more worn, which is which is where you would expect it to be from the fire’s flames. There is also some surface rust/corrosion indicative of age and use. I see no structural damage, chips, cracks or repairs and I believe they could easily be restored to their former glory if you so desire. Approx. measurements are 21 3/4" tall. 9 1/4" wide and 15" deep. I see no marks as to maker or foundry. Really a wonderful set of antique cast iron andirons. Vintage items are a piece of history and always in style. Offering styles and construction that cannot be duplicated today. Buying vintage is a wonderful way to contribute to"going green" by recycling pieces from the past. ~Please note~ Most of my pictures are taken with a magnifying lens giving me clear. Close up photos. Wonderful cast metal andirons. With pierced brass rosette tops. The scrolling brass tops feature an urn with flowers and thistle detail. They are raised, and sit on a slender gooseneck stem which emerges from a wonderfully textured, hand wrought leg. The base has an light arch and pad foot. Each is marked on the reverse with the number 238. They are attributed to a Sheffield. NY maker, C. 1900. The andirons stand 22" in height, and have a length of 18" The pierced ornament at the top has a diameter of 6" We have recently acquired the pair form a local New England estate, and they are in good condition. We have not cleaned them, so as to preserve the lovely patina that has started to develop on the top. The rear supports are clearly charred, as can be expected. True Bradley& Hubbard. American originals manufactured in Connecticut, 1886-1900, dolphin shaped cast iron andirons with scrolled tails. Marked"B&H" on back in raised letters(see next-to-last photo) Dog irons/log carriers attached with a dove-tailed joint, still moveable. Original matched pair with dolphins facing each other. Each andiron weights approximately 9 pounds. Approximately 14"H x 7"W x 16.5" D. B&H dolphin andirons like these have been featured by the Smithsonian Museum: www.si.edu/ahhp/firetoolsandandirons A difference I see with the ones shown by the Smithsonian is that I do not find the"9512 Patd Appld For" mark described. Mine do have the B&H mark. Also. The attached dog irons are slightly shorter than the ones cataloged by the Smithsonian. The metal is magnetic, yet it has a brass color to it. The back part is a cast that has a lot of rusting and wear as seen in photo. The front andirons are a cannon ball style and they are numbered 3685 on the bottom. There is a very old partial part of a sticker that is left on one, I was scraping some off with my finger nail, but I'll leave to buyer as to not do any damage to the item.
