These Tongs are in amazing condition for the age. The tongs are hinged. And only one side moves. There is a hand hammered pin in the cast top piece that holds the hinge together. You can also see the hammer marks on the bends just beside the hinge. The tongs measure 23 inches tall and they're 3 inches wide at the hinge. The tongs were painted at some point and there is significant paint loss. No Rust though. Excellent Rare example here. Each tile measures 6 1/4" X 6 1/4" The overall measurements are 37 1/4" wide X 37 1/4" High. The inside measurements for the opening are 23" wide X 29" high. The tiles are embossed with flowers and a leaf pattern. The colors are a bluish green. Browns and creme. I will ship these tile boxed up without the frame. This beautiful fireplace summer cover. Once used to close of a fireplace not in use, keeping out the unpleasant chimney smell and small animals, is more of an art work today.The heavily black enameled front of the door is embossed with the Roman Goddess Diana the Huntress. with bow and arrow, and wearing a short tunic, inside a decorative oval. Near Diana's' feet a deer rises from the foliage.On the back side it is signed DESIGN COPYRIGHTED BY W. L. SHARP& SON and dated 1895, with a mold number 523. There is surface rust on the back side that faced the chimney. These old covers are very rare and were often donated to scrap drives during WWII. This fireplace cover is reported to have come from the Widmann estate, Water Street, Lock Haven, Pa. The first Widmann owner being Rudolph Widmann who was the owner of the brewery in Lockport ... morethat closed before prohibition, and than his son Lester Widmann who had a chain of about 40 drugstores in the Pennsylvania area.This cover measures 22 by 25 inches, and is almost 2 inches thick at the thickest part of the figural embossing. I weighs over 30 pounds. There are predrilled bolt holes top and bottom for sealing the cover. This was pulled from a house converted to an antique store that dated to the 1930's. So it is at least that old but I believe it is older when you look at the aging on the wood and the fact that the previous owners had it mounted in the store using angles as shown. There are classical greek design elements including two very prominent Greek Ionic style columns on the front. This is a solid piece that needs very little work with the exception of the bowing on the top piece. Total measurements are 60" at the mantle with a height of 48" and 12" depth. Victorian Cast Iron Fire Place Tongs Double Heart Design
Here is a beautiful cast iron Victorian fire place tong. It has a double heart stamped out in the tong hands and has a rake end. There is minimal rust and one spot at the top of the arms where the cast iron broke. It appears that the mold was thin there. Like a bubble burst. The only damage to the tongs is the finial has been broken off. It must have happened a while ago as the broken face of it is worn just as much as the rest of its body. Each and every piece of wood is at least 100 years old. Most of the barns and houses were built from 1860- 1920's. The oldest pieces are typically what is called"hand hewn" This is where they used ax to cut the bark off the timbers and square up the logs. The other type are"saw cut" These pieces were either out of a newer building(1920's) or the owner was rich and had access to a saw mill. These pieces are distinguised by the swirl/ saw blade marks on the wood. On a number of pieces we will cut the top off. Sand, stain and varnish them. This gives a nice flat uniform finished piece. Only the cut areas are stained to match the original front and bottom. The color on the hand hewn section is from time and weathering. We try to leave as much original as we can while keeping it's integrity sound. Each piece is cleaned. Sanded, and kiln dried(if req'd) to 160 °-170° at the core temperture for 12 hours. Antique Cast Iron Fireplace Mantle From Victorian Estate. Red.
This item was purchased at the estate auction of a run down victorian era town home in Newton NC. The home itself was built in 1889 and this fireplace mantle may be one of the original ones that were placed inside. I measured this one and the other one I got with it but I have their heights confused as one is shorter than the other so i'll double check that and post the accurate measurements asap! The red one I believe is about 4-5 feet tall. Due to the size and weight of these guys i'm not sure if i'll be able to ship them through my post office. If not you will be fully refunded. But if you want to pay for freight shipping I suppose we can work with that though i'm not sure how to do it. It has no damage that I can see though it is quite dirty and could use a good cleaning.

Here is a pre-owned(Split Oak I think) slat-wood weave Vintage firewood/gathering basket. Probably dates from the 1970's. It does have some wear and is old. Tapped nails that hold slat-woven basket are rusted and gold frame piece is scuffed and minor dents. Please see all pictures for all the flaws. This slat-woven fireplace hearth basket measures approx 18 inches tall and about 15 inches deep. More than 17 inches long, and a bit more than 14 inches wide. This is one of those wonderful old English fireplace tool sets dating from the 1860s. We have owned it since 1974 and have used it for display only. Appropriate for a vintage set such as this. Of course there is nothing preventing daily use. It consissts of a wonderful serpantine poker, a horsehair brush, coal tongs, and a well made scoop/shovel, plus the original holding rack. Nice Pr. Vintage Or Antique Heavy Cannon Ball Type Andirons; Each 11 Lb.
This is a nice pair of vintage or antique cannon ball style andirons. The andirons each are 21" in total length and 18 1/4" in height. The top ball on these is 3" in diameter. I'm not really good at telling iron from steel but the upright fronts showing the nice hammered effect or workmanship look more like steel to me. The long horizontal extensions for holding logs appear to be iron. The andirons have some surface rust on them as you can see in the photos. Generally I take surface rust off iron or steel with kerosene or oil on a rag but didn't do this so they can be used right away in a fireplace without any fumes. The underside of the extensions had some letters and numbers incised on each one. One extension on the underside is marked AR 2 and the other one AL 2. Also both andirons have a'WC' marking on the ... moreinside of each leg. Perhaps this is a maker's identifying mark. Have tried to photograph these for the viewer. The last photo shows some black finish on the ball of one andiron. These pieces may well have been allover black at one time or at least the fancy fronts. I have looked both andirons over carefully and find no cracks. Chips, bruises, scrapes, or repairs from them being carelessly moved about over the years. Also, other than some surface rust or stain there were no places found where the metal has flaked or deteriorated. The metal is quite solid. Some discoloration and roughness can be seen where the extensions held the logs in the fire for many years. Still this area is solid and does not show surface metal breakup. See the last few photos. One can see two original long vertical casting lines on each side of both fancy upright front pieces. There is some crude casting as one vertical line may be not quite flush against the line coming down from the other side on these front pieces. There is also a little other rough casting that is typical of work done years ago. On the flat extension pieces one can see a few inches of very fine parallel surface lines done in the
