These Tongs are in amazing condition for the age. The tongs are hinged. And only one side moves. There is a hand hammered pin in the cast top piece that holds the hinge together. You can also see the hammer marks on the bends just beside the hinge. The tongs measure 23 inches tall and they're 3 inches wide at the hinge. The tongs were painted at some point and there is significant paint loss. No Rust though. Excellent Rare example here. Antique 18th C Wrought Iron Scissor Pipe Ember Tongs Hearth Coal Tool Fireplace
11 7/8" Long x 3 3/8" Wide A fine example of a pair of mid to late 18th century wrought iron utility tongs. New England in origin and dating circa 1740-1790. Tongs such as these used a variety of purposes at the hands of a hearth attendee or estate worker. The scissor action of the piece allowed for the procurement of a small burning ember. Taken from the open hearth fireplace and then used to transfer said coal to start another fire, or to ignite the bowl of a long stemmed tobacco pipe. The blacksmith who made the piece formed in great finger loops. The construction of the piece is overall a superb representation of period domestic utilitarian tools. An almost identical example to this set can be seen referenced in"Early American Antique Country Furnishings" by George Nuemann. See fig 748 on page 170. Dating back to the mid-Nineteenth Century. This single pair of Wrought Iron Fireplace Tongs is an actual Hand-Wrought item made by a Blacksmith or iron worker. Measuring over 17 inches in length(with a maximum spread of 8 inches) these primitive Tongs feature precision fitted joint, and other signs of quality workmanship. The unrestored surfaces show light to moderate rust, but can be easily cleaned and repainted to suit one’s taste. Vintage Antique Fireplace Blacksmith Ember Tongs Hand Forged Decorated
This is an absolutely beautiful set of antique ember tongs. Because there is so much hand detailed decorating on this set I'm sure that the blacksmith made it for use in the home. Where it would be displayed rather than in the blacksmith shop. I've tried to show some of the detail in the pictures which is difficult. But you can see the details on the finial, and the tongs are decorated with flattened hash marks up and down both sides of the tongs. In addition, the curves at the top of the tongs are only for decoration, and the design had to take extra time. Most ember tongs are just straight. The ember holder still fits together very tightly. One of the tongs moves the other stays stationary. It has all orginal paint, some has come off and there is some minor rust marks. There is no signature or marks of any kind, that I could find, ... morebut that is not unusual for this type of item from that time period. Made from heavy wrought iron metal in the 1800's. An early 1800's era Fireplace log Tongs from an estate. These would date back into the Colonial/ Federal era. Early 1800's. The handle is brass and matches some andirons form the Federal era. The tong sections hinge to open or close smoothly, the iron rods were hand forged or wrought iron and remain in very good condition. These are part of the museum quality collection of early american iron I'm selling this week. These Tongs are in amazing condition for the age. The tongs are hinged. And only one side moves. There is a hand hammered pin in the cast top piece that holds the hinge together. You can also see the hammer marks on the bends just beside the hinge. The tongs measure 23 inches tall and they're 3 inches wide at the hinge. The tongs were painted at some point and there is significant paint loss. No Rust though. Excellent Rare example here. c.1730's antique Colonial Fireplace Shovel & Tongs for Bedwarmer & Footwarmer
This fine matched set of fireplace tools are all hand forged and include a 27" shovel and a 23" tong. Rarely seen. This style fireplace shovel has pierced holes to sift out the ashes leaving just the embers for placement in either a bedwarmer or a footwarmer. Made by a Blacksmith, the handle is attached to the shovel using three iron rivets peened to the underside. Also of interest. The Blacksmith forged nice facets on the finials of both handles. Delightfully detailed. Finely finished c1920, cast iron Knight with fireplace tongs tucked out of sight behind him and he is holding a removable halberd, spear, spike, axe. Made by Nestor Foundry in Birmingham. England Size approximately: Knight 27” x 10" wide(70cm x 28.5cm) Knight with spear is 3' high(91cm high) 7" deep. 18cm deep) Approx. Weight: 20lbs(9 Kg) He has an extremely heavy cast iron body and platform from head to toe. The knight and tools. As you can see from the photos, are in very good condition. We personally never used them for any of our fireplaces but kept him at the ready on the hearth as a sentinel guarding all within his purview.
