ANTIQUE Copper Insert Coal Shuttle Bin Ice Box Cast Iron Lid Train Porter's Cart
Copper Bin Up for auction is a wonderful old copper bin with a heavy cast iron lid. The lid has a hook on the back that some utencil would have hung from and the discussions that have been had about what on earth this originally went to have been plentiful. Suggestions range from a coal shuttle where the hook would have held a hand broom. An ice insert from an old oak ice box where the hook would have been for a copper ice scoop. It was originally sold to me as an insert from a porters cart on a train where the table or crumb brush would have hung from the back and the cart would be pushed along the tables in the dining cart and the debris from the tables swept into the porters cart. Whatever it is, it is AWESOME! It measures 14" tall, 14" across and 13" deep.all measurements include the cast iron lip which is about 3/8's ... moreof an inch. I just love this piece! Obviously, some dents, rust on the cast iron, etc. I gave it a quick clean up with the old salt, flour and vinegar trick but you can polish to the degree of shine you desire! This was a interesting piece I found. Not sure of the age or if it could be a reproduction? Its a metal box with a slope front that opens. It has the nice eagle on the front of the cover. It has a metal handle on top for carrying. It has the metal feet. Where I purchased it they thought it had something to do with coal? Again no idea. It measures 10" across the front cover. Its 15 1/2 deep and is 11 1/4 high. If anyone has any ideas as to its use please let me know and I will pass that along. Thank you for looking.

Instead of opening the door, you pull down, revealing a metal-lined compartment. From the top of the small gallery to the original casters, this late 19th century coal hod measures 38 ¾ inches tall. The measurement across the front is 14 ½ inches and from front to back measures 13 ¾ inches deep. As you look at all of the photographs, you’ll see that the two columns, the railing around the top, the lion head handles on the sides and the rest of the ormolu hardware are original and gold gilded. All of the finely inlaid figured mahogany is perfect and there have never been any restorations. There is a tight shrinkage crack underneath the bottom board and the left side of the draw was altered to allow the pull down draw to open. Over the years the framing around the door moved through shrinkage. There also is an old strong repair to the side of the top right hand corner, of the mirror frame. For sale is a beautiful Antique 19th Century English Coal Scuttle Box made of wood with Brass hardware and a Metal Liner. It is 23 inches deep by 13 inches wide by 14 inches high. It is in overall very nice condition with a few minor flaws. The top section of wood where the handle is mounted appears to have been repaired at one time and there is a crack. There are two brass tacks or nails missing from one of the decorative front door corner pieces. I am not certain. But the bottom wood panel may have been replaced some time in the scuttle’s life. This treasure was found in an old New England farmhouse. It is a nice antique coal bin made of wood and brass and/or copper hardware and is in good condition. It has ornate hinges and handle with pull-ring hardware to open the door. It is an old piece and has had much use in its years so there are a few things to point out: one of the bottom brackets has eroded. There is a crack in the bottom board, one of the top hinges is bent but the door swings open and closed with no problems, the wood has some stains and has discolored with age and so has the hardware. I have taken photos of all these areas. The wood has no bad odors. Other then these age problems, the bin is in pretty solid condition. I believe the straight handle on the back of the box was used to hold the coal/ ash scoop. Tools are heavy duty with large square decorative handles with vase and flowers made of metal with bronze or brass color. Has extra hook on each side most likely for fire resistant gloves to hang. Bin has excellent scene(painting) of turkeys nesting in the brush or some sort of bird on upper section. Lower section has pink bird with long neck and legs.
