The cauldron known as a fire starter or smudge pot was used to store kerosene in or to start fires with by soaking the pumice stone wand in lighter fuel. It's a unique piece that is seldom seen and can still be used today. The cauldron stands 8" tall and has an iron handle that extends another 2 1/2" tall. It measures 8" wide and is made of cast iron. The lid of the cauldron and the top trim of the wand are made of brass. There is some over all vintage ware but nothing that distracts from it original form or beauty. Antique Cast Iron And Brass Kerosene Fire Starter Pot
Up for consideration is an Antique Cast Iron& Brass Three Footed Fire Starter Pot or Crock with a Pumice Stone Wand. The process for the fire starter is done by keeping Kerosene in the cast iron pot. And the pumice stone on the wand soaks in the Kerosene. When you are ready to build a fire you light the stone and place it under the logs. The other method is to mix Kerosene in the pot with sawdust and stir it into a paste, then use the wand to rub the paste onto the logs and start the fire. The pot is cast iron and the lid and the handle are brass. The wand is brass and the stone is a fired pumice stone. The wand is missing the end decorative handle/knob piece, which looked like the handle on the lid. The piece has a copper riveted handle and the hinged lid has a brass finial. The piece sits flat. The lid seats very tight. A great patina to the brass as shown. The pumice wand is hand forged brass with a very distinct rat tail loop unlike mass produced wands. The pumice stone is clearly used but mostly intact and includes a twisted wire bail. This is an excellent early version. This is an old brass cauldron fire starter w/ pumice wand designed to be able to fill the pot with kerosene and soaking the pumice wand and then lighting it in order to start a fire for things like a fireplace. Old Cast Iron Kerosene Fire Starter Pot Brass Lid with Pumice Wand Three Legged
This is one heavy little pot. It weighs almost 8# without the box to pack it in. It will probably be cheaper to ship FedEx so if you would like a FedEx quote just email your zip code. It measures about 5 1/4" high. The black cast iron part only, and about 4 3/8" across the opening on the inside. From handle to handle is about 7 1/4" The cast iron pot is three legged and has some white spots on it that look like paint. I didn't try and clean them off with anything but my fingernail and it seems to come off. Just don't have enough finger nail to finish the job! The pumice stone looks absolutely brand new. I have had one of these handles in the past but it had a longer handle. This one is only 5" long and about 8" including the stone. This nice. Heavy kerosene/ oil holder is made of cast iron painted green with a brass cover, handle and dipper. These containers are used to start fires by dipping the pourous pumice stone end of the dipper into the kerosene or lamp oil and placing that part under the kindling in the fireplace with the handle sticking out. It is then lit and the kerosene fuels the fire to start the wood burning. When kerosene is used up, the dipper is then removed and placed in fireproof location for cooling. Up for your consideration is a very old antique/ vintage solid brass CAPE COD SHOP ROSTAND fire starter/ smudge pot with original wand! Piece is in very good condition with excellent aged patina! There is a slight minor dent on the side(please refer to photos) Pitcher itself measures 6 Inches X 4 3/4 Inches and weighs 12 OZ. Wand measures 12 1/2 Inches X 3/4 Inch and weighs 6 ounces. This container was a vital part of survival in the early 1900's making it extremely easy and convenient to start a contained fire. The smudge pot worked by pouring kerosine into the pitcher and letting the rock attached to the wand absorb the liquid. Then they would stick the wand under a piece of wood/ kitling and light it. This vintage fire starter measures approx. 7-1/4" tall(not including handle) x 6" wide x 5" deep. It has a 4-1/2" top diameter and the handle has a 4-1/2" drop. It is black cast iron in the shape of a honey pot with a golf ball divot pattern between raised horizontal bands. There are 3 cast iron feet descending from the pot. It has an aluminum lid with hole in the side to accommodate the wand. The lid at one time had a light brass colored finish which can only now be seen on the inside. The wand measures approx. 7" long with a worn brass colored finish. There is some rust on the handle. The stone measures approx. 2-1/4" in diameter x 2" tall. Up for bid is a VINTAGE COPPER& BRASS FIRE STARTER w/ WAND ON THREE LEGS. It measures 8 3/4 inches tall with the handle. 8 inches tall with the cover by 7 inches wide. The wand is 12 inches by 2 1/4 inches. There is a small indent on the brass cover, which might be able to be pushed out. The bottom is in super shape! I have only washed this up a bit. Someone has cleaned this once and was unable to clean between the side handles and the pot. IT once looked all like that, which copper tends to do over time if not kept up. This would look perfect by a fireplace or wood stove.

Antique / Vintage Cast Iron & Brass Kerosene Fire Starter with Pumice Wand
This is an Antique/ Vintage Cast Iron& Brass Kerosene Fire Starter with Pumice Wand. I have never used one of these fire starters but I did find some information online regarding their use. The pumice stone at the end of the wand is first saturated with Kerosene from the cast iron pot. To start the fire without paper or kinding. Place the saturated wand under the logs and light the kerosene saturated pumice stone with a match. The kerosene will burn long enough to ignite the logs directly. Once the logs are burning, remove the stone and let it cool on the hearth. Replace it in the pot when it is cool, to be ready for your next fire. The brass lid has a slot for the wand to stick out. The pot is 5 1/2" tall including the three feet. But including the finial on the lid. The lid diameter is 4 5/8" This is a very heavy piece and ... morethe total weight of the pot and wand is 5 pounds. It appears to me from where there is some paint loss that the lid and the wand handle are brass. They are painted black. I do not know if the black paint is original to the piece or not. Condition The entire unit is overall in excellent condition but there are a few minor condition issues to note: some light to moderate paint loss on the lid and wand handle. some minor black marks on the outer pumice stone ridges that I assume are from normal contact with the insides of the pot there are some stubborn remnants of what appears to be a very old. VINTAGE KEROSENE HOLDER & HAND FORGED IRON FIRE STARTER ROD, BRASS / IRON, VG.
This antique brass kerosene holder& rod tool was used to start the fireplace years ago. The container was filled with kerosene or oil and the rod. Which contained a porous pumice stone on the end, absorbed the kerosene. The rod end was then placed among the wood and lit. It burned for a while enabling the fire to catch onto the logs. The holder has a handle and hinged lid with a slot for the rod to fit with the lid closed. There is a hole/slot on the handle to hang the holder. The fire lighting rod tool handle is made of hand forged iron and has a large absorbent pumice stone on the end. 3 Leg Cast Iron Cauldron Fire Pot - Brass Lid / Starter Wand w/ Pumice Smudge 8"
Gorgeous solid cast iron and brass cauldron. Excellent condition and weighs a solid 10 1/2 lbs! 8 1/2 tall bottom to too of lid. 8 1/2 wide handle to handle. 12 1/2 inches long pumice stone wand with a brass handle. The heavy cast brass lid. 5 1/4" wide. This is how this wonderful antique but still useful piece works. The pumice stone on the wand is soaked in the fuel. When ready to light your fire. Place the saturated wand under the logs and light the pumice stone with a match. The stone burns about 10 minutes, long enough to ignite logs directly with little tinder or kindling required. Once the wood catches fire, remove the wand and let it cool on the hearth. Replace it in the cauldron pot when it is cool, to be ready for your next fire. Vintage Cast Iron Pot with Brass Lid Handle-Fire Starter with Pumice Stone Wand
Offered is this neat vintage fire starter for your hearth. About 8 1/2 inches tall and about 8 inches at widest point. It is cast iron and has a cast iron lid with a solid brass knob. The pumice stone wand is 11 1/4 inches long and has a ovoid pumice stone on one end and a brass knob(painted black) on the other end. The lid has a notch so you can close the lid to put out the wand when finished starting your fire. This one was clearly used, as the pot has soot on the inside, an odor of kerosene and the rod on the wand is bent from overheating. In very good condition the pot has no visible damage or cracks. But it does have some surface dirt and oxidation that needs a good cleaning. I wiped off years of surface dust but didn't delve deeper. The pumice stone on the wand has some cracks but doesn't seem to be in danger of coming apart. ... moreVery heavy but it should fit in a large fixed rate priority package. Old Cambodian solid brass "fire starter" with lid and handle. Heavy. Unique.
A dear friend of mine who recently passed away spent a number of years in his youth(in the 1950s) in Cambodia while his father worked as a road builder. They were all-mother. Father, and son-avid collectors and brought back many interesting items as memorabilia of their time in Cambodia. I've listed other items from this time as well. This is one of the nicer and really unique items among the lot. A solid brass lidded mortar and pestle with handle. This is a very HEAVY piece(almost 5 pounds) and is in excellent shape(aside from a few minor scruff marks that would probably polish way easily) The end of the pestle is made of some kind of hard ceramic-like material. It looks as if this has never been used. I don't know how old it is. The mortar stands on three feet and is about 5 inches high. The top of the handle, if put in a completely ... moreerect position makes the whole thing measure about 9 1/2 inches. The pestle is about 10 inches in length and the ceramic grinding part is about 3 x 2 inches. the lid measures about 4 1/2 inches in diameter. This is a rather unique item I think: I haven't seen many mortar and pestles with a lid like this one.or ones that are as large and heavy. I think my photos give a good sense of what this looks like. This would be a very nice decorative piece if polished nicely.
