Persian Coal Box 1857 antique brass white glass handle scuttle hod bucket pail
This auction is for a very attractive antique brass coal scuttle. It's a nice size and has a nice patina. It would be great for re-use as a coal scuttle. Tinder box, or planter. It carries a 1 1/2" diameter round plate on the base embossed with"The Persian Coal Box Registered" A bit of poking about on the internet shows The Persian Coal Box has a British patent from 1857. The coal box stands about 15 3/4" in overall height. It's somewhere around 19" in overall length. The main cylinder is about 10 1/4" in diameter. The base is about 8 1/4" in diameter. It has the original white glass handle. It has a visible crack(see photo) But looks unrepaired and solid. It appears that this pail originally had a cover that would have been hinged at the bottom of the cylinder. A remnant of the hinge remains(see ... morephoto) Inside is a small"shelf" for a scoop. This piece shows expected dents. Dings, and blemishes from a century and a half of use. It does not have any major bends, creases, or signs of repair. This antique brass coal hod is a large 16" wide x 16" high with the handle upright. It is in excellent condition and I had a floral arrangement made to put in it and display on my fireplace hearth. Victorian Coal Hod This 19th Century coal hod is made of mellow wood with a nice grain and has handsome brass or bronze fittings. They have a nice patina which I was unwilling to remove just to find out which metal alloy was used. The unusual strap hinges bear an image of a face and above this is a registration number: Rd. 231388. The handle on top is marked Pat. 11065. Measuring 16 inches by 12 inches by 10 inches high(not including handle) This coal hod has a bracket on the back to hold a scoop. The piece is in very good condition overall, but there is minor wear to the edges of the wood, as can be seen in the photographs. The metal liner is intact and in good condition. This coal hod likely dates to the 1870's or thereabouts. Although it is a utilitarian item. It is also decorative and has great appeal. The difference between a"slipper Box" and a coal hod is the slipper box were"lined" with a felt type material. Now you have heard just about every thing. The beveled glass mirror and all the gold gilt accents this antique English stand looks like a small ... morecabinet. Actually, it is not a stand, but a very fancy English Coal Hod or Scuttle. Instead of opening the door, you pull down, revealing a metal-lined compartment. From the top of the small gallery to the original casters, this late 19th century coal hod measures 38 ¾ inches tall. The measurement across the front is 14 ½ inches and from front to back measures 13 ¾ inches deep. As you look at all of the photographs, you’ll see that the two columns, the railing around the top, the lion head handles on the sides and the rest of the ormolu hardware are original and gold gilded. All of the finely inlaid figured mahogany is perfect and there have never been any restorations. There is a tight shrinkage crack underneath the bottom board and the left side of the draw was altered to allow the pull down draw to open. Over the years the framing around the door moved through shrinkage. There also is an old strong repair to the side of the top right hand corner, of the mirror frame. What a gorgeous fireplace piece. Old tin with tole painted roses coal scuttle could be used for cleaning ashes from your fireplace. This piece measures approx 14.5" high x 11x15" Not including the extra for the shovel/scoop. Nice brass and wood shovel scoop is placed in pocket in back. Door opens on scuttle. The inner tray removes to clean using the 2 side handles. There is some paint loss as shown as expected from this early victorian piece. But it is an overall nice art painting of roses. Some dings too. The scoop is in excellent condition as shown. It appears that it is handmade as you can see uneveness in the edges of the brass. Nice heavy brass handles to carry on the scuttle. Vintage Brass Coal Hod Scuttle - Maritime Look
Vintage Brass Coal Scuttle I purchased this item at a farm sale and know nothing about this type of item so will not pretend to name it English or American.etc. I will tell you it measures about 19" long. 12” tall, and 12" wide. The finish is heavily tarnished. I was concerned that the material was not brass so cleaned a couple of the worst spots on the scuttle. As heavily tarnished as the two spots were, they both cleaned to show shiny brass. See photos. I did not see any deep dents but could be some scratches and small dents under all the tarnish. It is a nice size and to me a kind of maritime look. I have no idea of its age.

An antique. Solid copper Helmet coal scuttle. Beautifully dovetailed with a nice patina. The handles are fashioned from white china with delicate blue flowers. The handle is fastened with detailed brass lion heads. This solid copper coal hod is obviously handmade.The dovetailing goes all the way around the bucket and up the side. There are quite a few ripples. Creases and dents and the scuttle appears to have been repaired with brass a couple of times. When you hold the piece to the light you can see a faint line and a faint dot worn through, quite o bviously a utilitarian piece. Please study the pictures carefully for condition and details. What an incredible piece of handcrafted brassware! Gorgeous older hand hammered brass. Copper and Delft coal hod, coal scuttle or coal bucket(depends on what part of the country you're from) is sure to make a tremndous impact on your decor, or be a great help if you actually use it for coal. An antique reproduction, this has a handmade Delft pottery handle, a hand formed brass handle, cast brass lion's heads for the handle mounts, as well as 4 cast brass lion's paws for feet. All are hand riveted with copper rivets. Has an old partial sticker from an auction, as well as an old label that reads: Made in the Republic of Ireland, superimposed over a shamrock, and: Any dents or discoloration which appear on this item, are part of the antiquing process, as this item is a replica of an antique, made of solid brass and copper. Vintage Black Metal Coal Scuttle/Hod and Ash Scoop or Shovel Coal Hod Old Coal or Ash Bucket is black painted galvanized metal. Probably zinc, in a traditional ribbed design with a wide spout and swiveling bail handle with a small tipping handle welded to the back tapered side. Part of the original paper label is still on the bucket. The manufacturer was Martiniti and the line appears to have been called Martin Ware. The Scuttle is 17 inches to the spout. 12 inches high and 12 inches across at the bale handle. The shovel is 14.25 inches long and 4.25 inches across the scoop end. The condition is fair. Given obvious hard use. The raised edge on the base of the hod is split in several places, the base of the interior of the scuttle is rusted. This auction is for the antique Victorian Aesthetic metal toleware painted coal scuttle/ hod you see here. It measures about 25 1/2" tall X 11 1/2" DEEP x 12 1/4" WIDE. It has beautiful images painted on it with Japanese influences. As you can see. Decorations include flowers, fans, and ribbons.
