But this item is an exception. As a young woman in 1973, I went to New York for the first time and visited Tiffany's. The New York store was the only store at that time. My boyfriend had been in the Navy and I decided to buy this whistle because of him. When I brought it home, he admired it and played a few calls on it. I put it on a chain and wore it once or twice. But I broke up with him a year later and this whistle has sat in my jewelry box ever since. It is in excellent condition. No nicks or dents or major scratches. I cleaned it gently before this listing. It is marked Sterling Tiffany& Co. measure 3 1/2" in length and comes with the Tiffany ... morepouch. I no longer have the box. This is a vintage Boatswain's Call or whistle. It is 5 inches long and the chain is 30 inches long. The whistle is made of brass and the chain is just a plain gold metal. There is a pamphlet that explains the history. Use and respect the whistle is used for. The booklet is 4 pages(2 front and back) It comes in its original box. The whistle shows some use and wear but overall in very good condition. There are no rips or tears to the booklet. The box has two areas where the top layer of paper has been removed, like when you peel tape off of a box. The box is intact though, but there is wear overall. The whistle measures approximately 4-1/2 inches in length. The chain measures 36 inches in length and it can be worn around the neck. Boatswain's calls were used in the navy as a signal or mark of respect when captains or high ranking persons came aboard ships. This call is very well made, but I can not see any makers or manufacturer's mark on it. The parts or sections of the boatswains whistle have nautical names with references to parts of a ship or nautical things.such as the keel, buoy, hole, and gun. I purchased this Great Collectable at an Estate Sale sold as is as seen in the pictures it is in Great(Pre-Owned) condition showing slight surface wear from handling/use. I myself did test the Whistle as being prior Navy man/Sailor and the whistle blast a Nice HIGH Pitch tune bringing me back to those Navy days lol anyway the whistle tested out fine. It was once the only method other than the human voice of passing orders to men on board ship. I do not know its exact age. But it was in the home of a WWII Navy Veteran. Very Good Vintage Condition. Vintage Wartime/Maritime Bosun (Boatswain) Naval Silver Whistle w/CHAIN
This is an antique Bosun whistle with the original chain measuring 24" The whistle itself is approx. 5 1/2" long and is Silver in nature with a tarnish. I couldn't find any marks. So let's call it silver plate to be safe. On the flat part of the frame. There is a small"M" inscribed, probably to show ownership from the original user. The whistle is certainly operational and shows no abuse such as repairs, breaks, dents, etc. just the tarnish. Examining the piece. It looks old probably at least from WW2. Although, I found one the same in dimensions and look as this one sold on Ebay and there's was listed as Civil War era. For reference, The item# was 381030232445 and it went for over $100. Greetings ebayers! This auction is for a vintage bosun's/ boatswain's whistle and hand woven lanyard. The whistle is marked"Sterling A.E. Co Utica. NY" the American Emblem Co) The whistle measures 5 1/2"l and the lanyard measures 17 1/2" from the top to the loop. The whistle does have dents and does not make a sound anymore- presumably from being well used! Through a brief google search I have found varying information as to when this might have been made- some say late 1800's other say early 1900's, so your guess is as good as mine(unless you know for sure) Still an interesting bit of history!
