Boatswain Bo’ swain Sterling Whistle Cord Lanyard USS Kennedy CV67 Named Vet
This sale is for a sterling silver boatswain whistle from the estate of a vet who served aboard the USS Kennedy CV67 during his career. USS Kennedy memorabilia is highly sought after and a named boatswain’s whistle is right up on top for desirability. First a little research. This sterling silver whistle is marked“sterling” and has the TTC Logo for The Thomae Company of Attleboro. Mass and founded in 1920, who produced silver whistles for a number of years. Although they had produced whistles previously, around WWII, the Thomae Company received a large US Navy contract order for whistles in the 1970s, making them official US Navy items. This whistle is personalized with the marks. W. Johnson BM3” on one side and“U.S.S. J.F.K CV67” on the other. A little research turned up a Willie Johnson who served aboard in 1975-1976 as a boatswain. There ... moreis also a reference to an Andrew William Johnson Jr. BM3, a Vietnam era vet who may also be the same person, who is indicated to have been crew 1975-1977, who passed away in 2008. Condition: the sides of the pipe are dimpled. See photos and the sterling dark. Has original, hand plaited boatswain’s navy neck cord, made of navy nylon. The cord has some fading, pulling and a loose cord. I have not done any attempts to repair, clean or restore this item. It is original, dark and salty from use aboard the USS Kennedy. It is difficult to find named boatswain’s pipes, especially connected with a vessel and original cord. Sterling boatswains whistles are scarce enough. But to find one that had a navy contract associated with it is great. Then on top of that it is named and the ship identified; to make it even better is a local, ship-made lanyard for the whistle. You really can’t get more detail than that, outside of a photo of the guy wearing the whistle(which I don’t have) I am starting this off at $185 for the whistle and the lanyard together for the same price. But this item is an exception. As a young woman in 1973, I went to New York for the first time and visited Tiffany's. The New York store was the only store at that time. My boyfriend had been in the Navy and I decided to buy this whistle because of him. When I brought it home, he admired it and played a few calls on it. I put it on a chain and wore it once or twice. But I broke up with him a year later and this whistle has sat in my jewelry box ever since. It is in excellent condition. No nicks or dents or major scratches. This is a vintage Boatswain's Call or whistle. It is 5 inches long and the chain is 30 inches long. The whistle is made of brass and the chain is just a plain gold metal. There is a pamphlet that explains the history. Use and respect the whistle is used for. The booklet is 4 pages(2 front and back) It comes in its original box. The whistle shows some use and wear but overall in very good condition. There are no rips or tears to the booklet. Antique Chinese Boatswain's Bosuns whistle
800's- Early 1900's Silver plated Chinese Naval Boatswain or Bosuns Whistle. I don't know a lot about it. Although It has been in my grandparents possession for my entire 42 years and My father said he remembered it when he was a little kid, 73 years ago. I do know that friends of my grandparents were missionaries to China and brought back a lot of artifacts and things. There are no dents or damage to the whistle that i can find. It DOES appear to be silver plate over copper or bronze. It has a Dragon on both sides. There IS a makers mark on the front bottom on the rail that runs around the front of the ball. ANTIQUE SILVER BOATSWAIN BOSONS WHISTLE Marked Silver. Which I think means Sterling Silver. I took it to an antique dealer and he said its probably from 1890 or earlier, at least 100 years old. It is Marked Silver from before they had the sterling or.925 standard, Tarnished surface. There is also a mark at the end of the gun close to the mouthpiece, it looks like an A or a tooth I am unsure, I took close up pics so you can see all the marks that I found. Looks to be in pretty good condition. Scratches on one side and tarnished,as shown in pictures. Estate find. Measures 2-1/2" long. This whistle works and is very old. You are looking at a Great Collectable Vintage Boatswain Sailors Whistle Marked on the oneside Sterling and in side the Triangle Logo its Marked A.E. CO. UTICA N.Y. I purchased this Great Collectable at an Estate Sale sold as is as seen in the pictures it is in Great(Pre-Owned) condition showing slight surface wear from handling/use. I myself did test the Whistle as being prior Navy man/Sailor and the whistle blast a Nice HIGH Pitch tune bringing me back to those Navy days lol anyway the whistle tested out fine. It measures approx. 5 1/2" Long. As mentioned earlier its Marked Sterling/A.E.CO. UTICA N.Y. its hard to see in the picture but I guarantee its there. Great Collectable.
