Up for grabs is a old brass. Or bronze, Tugboat Ship Air Horn. I found it digging in a guys basement at an estate sale. Their basement was full of other old boating and shipping pieces. Living in the Seattle Puget Sound area you tend to come across this kind of stuff time and time again. These were typically used on Tugboats or other smaller commercial type of vessels that made numerous trips through Puget Sound and the Ocean. The previous owner was knowledgeable and told me that it should still work fine, and that it is very loud. Please note that I have not actually tested it though. This piece looks to have been painted a few times throughout its life. Imagine the stories it could probably tell! But some quick research indicates that this is most likely made by The Siebe Gorman& Co in the mid 1800's as a FOG HORN for maritime sailors and fishermen to sound out to approaching ships that they were near, or a ships FIRE HORN to alert sailors of onboard dangers. I have included a photo that shows what the unit would like if it came complete with the the bellows. This listing is just for a brass horn. There is no longer a bellows with this item. Only a horn is included! There are some indentations and some staining on the horn as can be seen in the photos. It appears that that the front portion of the horn might have once been ... moresoldered to the bottom section. But now the front portion can be removed. The horn includes the screw on collar that would attach the horn to the bellows. When I run my finger tips across the bottom, I can hear the horn amplify the sound! Own a piece of Catalina Island history. This fog horn was on the S.S. Catalina and still works! WELL! When you crank it up it is very loud. While living in Catalina my mother came upon this from a salvage guy there about 10 years ago. Who acquired many pieces from the ship. I am also throwing in a nice matted black& white photo of the S.S. Catalina in a black frame. The box is wood with original red painted finish and the words FOG HORN in white, which are faded. The horn itself is made from a"King" tuba by HN White Company Cleveland Ohio. The fog horn measurements are 46" tall 26" wide. The box alone is 22" tall and 14 1/2" wide. Antique TELE-CALL Electric Brass Horn with Oval Bell. Fog Horn? Description: Thanks for looking at this unique Tele-Call horn by the Mead Electric Signal Company of Cleveland Ohio. I came across this in my travels here in Northern Michigan. I could not find another like it on Ebay or doing a Google search so I assume it is a rare piece. It is all brass; a magnet does not stick to it anywhere. The bell opening measures 8 ¼ inches by 6 3/8 inches. The horn has some dents. Mostly on the elbow and three screws are missing on the motor. Total length is 12 inches. The Brass makers tag is on the end of the motor. It reads: TELE-CALL, THE MEAD ELECTRIC SIGNAL COMPANY, CLEVELAND OHIO, PATS. Vtg ANTIQUE Asian SIGNED JAPANESE Brass FOG or HUNTING HORN Nautical Ship Boat
For sale is an antique brass Japanese fog or hunting horn. I cannot be exactly sure. As I researched the piece, and the few others I have found describe this piece as both. Regardless, it is a pretty unique interesting piece. There is a makers mark, or signature, in Japanese(pictured) This piece does work when you blow through it. Horn measures 8" long. 2.5" wide, and 1.5" deep. There is a little wear as you can see in the photos. You can see some patina in places. Someone wrote something on masking tape a long time ago, and it is stuck on there. I currently don't have any cleaning materials to remove it, but it is removable I would think. And there is a little dent which you can see in the 5th picture, located by the finger loop. Please ask questions before buying and thanks for looking! I think this is off a boat. It works well and sounds like a fog horn. Horn is made by the American Strombos Co. of Philadelphia. Serial#5539 Patented Oct. 15. 1918.
