Handsome Antique Vtg Heavy Brass or Bronze Bell ~ Ship Train School ?
I was told this is an antique ship's bell. But it has no name on it, so please use your own expert judgment. I can tell you that it is beautiful, it has a nice look to it, it certainly looks like an antique casting, and it is substantial& heavy. It is 8" dia. at the bottom, and approx. 8.25" tall. I think the mounting piece was added later, but it too is nice& heavy-duty, and looks good with it(even though it is chrome on iron) The wood piece was how it was mounted to the wall in the estate I bought it from. The whole thing weighs about 11 1/2 lbs. so the bell alone is probably around 10 lbs. No clapper inside, you'll have to add something. Heavy Brass/Bronze Bell 1958 A.T. Cameron aka Arctic Discoverer
We are offering items recently recovered from the treasure hunting ship"Arctic Discoverer" Arctic Discoverer was originally named AT Cameron built in 1957 or 1958. Over the years the name changed several times and was eventually named the Arctic Discoverer. In 1989 Tommy Thompson and his crew of treasure hunters discovered the wreck of the SS Central America(aka the steamship George Law) A side-wheel steamer carrying nearly six hundred passengers returning from the California Gold Rush, that sank two hundred miles off the Carolina coast in September 1857. Over four hundred lives and twenty-one tons of California gold were lost in the wreck. There are several books written and documentries filmed about the discovery of the wreck all acknowledging the discovery by the Arctic Discoverer. The most well know book is"Ship of Gold ... morein the Deep Blue Sea. by author Gary Kinder. The Arctic Discoverer was seized by the US Marshal's and auctioned off to the highest bidder. So after sitting quietly untouched for eight years we were lucky enough to get her and now you can be part of her history as well. Heavy Antique Large Cast Brass BELL nice sound MUST SEE 8 inches & old chain
This item is an old. Heavy bell with a great loud sound. It is not a tinkle or something you'd get from many modern bells or a bell which is thin- it's the large sound that actually seems to me more like a very large bell. This one is approximately 8 inches in diameter at the base and about 8 inches also in height if sitting on a table. I cannot tell how thick the bell is but am estimating a quarter inch or so of solid metal, perhaps somewhat more. I am guessing the material is brass but again don't really know and am not making any representations here. It is obviously a heavy solid metal but I just don't know enough to say. I am also guessing it was a maritime bell of some sort but, again, that is just a guess. The bell is weathered and looks old but I have no information on how old it is beyond the fact that I have owned ... moreit for about 30 years and our understanding was that it was old when we bought it. My pictures show an area of the bell where I have used metal polish to remove weather corrosion in order to give a sense of what the bell could look like and perhaps a better guess as to material. The picture also shows where there is a bit of paint at the edge of the bell- I think it's the only such place and could easily be removed but am leaving the finish as is except for the one area so a buyer can do what seems most desirable for the buyer's purpose. I think the bell must be cast metal and there is a pattern around the base, which I hope my pictures show at least to some degree. The inside of the bell has areas that are somewhat green and the outside perhaps a little as well, which is part of why I think the material is brass.

bronze nautical engine room gong ship bell 18 " diameter! steam heavy gauge
This is the largest engine room gong made. According to old catalogs in my collection. It is pristine, with a lovely even patina, and is marked with the manufacturer's or perhaps the ship chandler's logo, Cory. This is probably the Charles Cory company in business selling ship's stores and maritime items in the northeast US from the mid 19th century. I purchased this years ago in the northeast. The gong itself is 18 inches in diameter, about a quarter inch thick, and is made of bronze. It is a double gong with hardwood inserts in the bronze hammers. It has a very long lasting and powerful ring, very melodious. The support frame is heavy iron, the springs are tempered bronze, and the overall dimensions are 28 inches tall by 25 inches wide. Weight is around 50 lbs. These were connected to the pilot house of a steamer by cable so ... morethe pilot could send certain signals to the engineer below. Such bells were used on inland water boats as well as ocean-going steamers. I'll be glad to answer questions. A real showpiece.

The bell was supposed to be mounted outside the Navigation Bridge to mark the change of watches. But was never used. It is 8" diameter at the base and the body is 5" tall. I cannot find any foundry or makers mark on the bell and there are none online to compare it to so I am not sure of its exact age but I believe it has some good age to it as seen in pictures, I took several close ups so bidders could get a good look, I had no way to research it to check for age, would be grateful for any information on this piece, it is engraved queen Elizabeth with a star in center, lettering is 1 in tall on the word queen, the star is 2 1/4 in across, letters in Elizabeth are 1/2 in tall, bell is 10 1/2 in tall 10 3/4 in across bottem, weights 12 lbs, no clanger inside bell, a bolt in top inside center as seen in picture, bell has been cleaned up some as when I purchased it was very dirty, great quality beautiful bell, buyer pays 22.00 shipping in cont.
