Vintage metal whistle – possibly Navy or military?
Here is a pre-owned metal whistle. It is a bit odd shaped but it actually works. It measures about 5 ½ inches long. The whistle is a white polished metal with some signs of wear on the plating or finish. There are no inscriptions or markings. It works- but I don't know its origin or purpose. This is a vintage Boatswain's Call or whistle. It is 5 inches long and the chain is 30 inches long. The whistle is made of brass and the chain is just a plain gold metal. There is a pamphlet that explains the history. Use and respect the whistle is used for. The booklet is 4 pages(2 front and back) It comes in its original box. The whistle shows some use and wear but overall in very good condition. There are no rips or tears to the booklet. The box has two areas where the top layer of paper has been removed, like when you peel tape off of a box. The box is intact though, but there is wear overall. This is a WWII era Boatswain Call or Pipe. It was used on a naval ship to whistle commands to the crew. It is brass and copper. The size is 4 3/4" long. It is in very good and functional condition. Historically the boatswain's call was used to pass commands to the crew when the voice could not be heard over the sounds of the sea. Because of its high pitch, it could be heard over the activities of the crew and bad weather. Whether sounding to haul anchor or simply calling the crew to mess, any and all commands could be passed down easily after the beautiful, haunting call of a well-played pipe. Up for sale is a nice maritime call whistle used on US Navy ships. And perhaps, Coast guard, too. The whistle type is known as Boatswain and is often referred to as"Bosun" It comes with its original lanyard made of a sturdy rope like material. It has some good age to it, perhaps, WWII but not much later than that. It is marked made in Germany. It's in great shape and the whistle and rope lanyard show age, but have no major defects. Yes, the whistle still produces the loud, ear piercing shrill, that is certainly hard to miss. This is a uncommonly nice piece of maritime, Navy, military history.
