ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE FOLK ART TERRA COTTA ROOSTER ROOF FINIAL MOUNTED RIDGE TILE
The item for bid is a One-Piece Unmarked Original Antique Architectural Terra Cotta Roof Ridge Line Tile with a Very Realistic& Detailed Hollow Rooster Finial that is molded onto the rounded tile. I do not know the maker of this wonderful piece. But I do believe it dates to the Mid-1800's. The rooster has several manufacturing holes. Including two nickel-size holes, one in the middle of the back and one under the tail, along with a small hole below the right wing and a small one on each side of the leg stand, that allowed heat to escape during the kiln firing process, and to allow rain water to pass thru and drain when mounted on a roof. The border of the tile has a molded pie-crust decoration around all but one end. Which is smooth, to allow it to fit under the next tile creating a water-tight closure. The rooster's feet are ... moremolded into the exterior surface of the roof tile. Are the wings are trimmed with random chips of white stone embedded into the terra cotta, as are the eyes. I purchased this several years ago at a local estate auction where it was advertised as having been found in the New England area of the USA. I took it to the Antiques Roadshow in Chattanooga. Tenn. a few years ago and it was appraised at $800- $1,200 at that time. THIS IS A VERY ICONIC PIECE OF FOLK ART THAT WOULD BE THE FOCAL POINT OF ANY PRIMITIVE COLLECTION! The piece has excellent detail with no visible defects. The piece measures 18-3/4" tall from the bottom of the tile to the top of the rooster comb. The rooster itself measures 14-1/2" tall from the top of the roof tile. 17" long from tip of the beak to the end of the tail, and 5" wide across the wings. The tile measures 5" tall to the top of the pie-crust trim, 15" long, and 12-1/2" wide. The piece weighs seventeen(17) pounds. Each measures 6" inches long by 3" inches wide and varies in thickness from 3/16" to 1/2" and have two(2) holes where they attached to whatever it was that they came from. Lovely solid copper winged fairy finial or finding. Which appears to date from the late 19th/early 20th Century. Would make a wonderful addition to anything it could be attached to. Shows some wear and aging, commensurate with its age, but is largely in good condition, with a worn gilt finish. A really beautiful component that deserves a good home. Group of Antique Brass Ball Finials& Separators Up for your consideration is this group of antique brass ball finials. I am unsure if these pieces go together but probably came from the same piece.There are four ball finials(hollow) Four shapely separators which consist of two pieces put together(hallow) and a group of 13 small brass balls. All the larger balls and separators have dents but there are no cracks and all the small balls have white paint on them. Offered without reserve is a fancy old brass finial that I suspect once adorned a clock. It stands approx. 4" tall and it is about 2 1/2" wide. It feels like a hollow piece and it is rather light in weight. It has fancy look, the bulbous section is encircled with a fancy ring or band. The center finial point terminated into a wood screw at the bottom so it would be easy to mount this to any wood surface. As you can see in the pictures the bulb section has some small denting. It is semi-hollow with a neck and base having 4 prongs suggesting embedding in concrete. Don't know. Height 7" Width 4.5" Weight 4 Lbs. Someone was digging a hole about 25 foot deep in Lower Manhattan. New York City, near the World Trade Center off Fulton Street. I found this in the dirt dug up near the bottom of the hole.
