An outstanding feature is that it was made in 1785 and is approximately 228 years old! The English silversmith hallmarks along the bottom edge spell out its unique history. Maker's Mark: Bold initials"RH" in an oval escutcheon. Granted in 1783 to the maker, Robert Hennell Silver Mark: Lion Passant- sterling silver content.925 Date Letter: Small letter"k" in a shield-like escutcheon. Equals 1785 date of assay in London City Mark: crowned leopard's head" means London was place of manufacture Duty Mark: left facing profile of George III" from Dec 1784 to May 1786 indicated duty was paid The piece stands about 2 inches high on 4 ball and claw feet. It is 3 1/4 inches long by 2 1/4 inches wide. The entire salt cellar weighs approximately 6 ounces. With the silver frame at 2 ounces and the glass insert at 4 ounces. The silver frame has beautiful lattice work along the upper perimeter. Topped off by an elegant edge trim. Along the sides, is the graceful engraving into the silver of a garland of roses, intertwined with a ribbon. Also, one side is engraved a capital letter"B" and the other side has a design resembling a clock face. There was no indication of any defects or scratches on the silver frame. The cobalt blue insert. Has an amazing color, especially when held up to sunlight or other bright light. At the bottom of the insert is an etching of an eight pointed star. This refracts the light passing through, enhancing its beauty. There is a 3/4 inch imperfection and a small chip on the bottom outside edge of the insert. However, it was acquired from an estate cleanout dealer here in New Jersey. It is old and looks to me like an Art Nouveau décor. No chips or cracks. There is a dimple(not sure what else call it) in the glass from when it was made. I took a close up photo so you can see what I mean. Also. I did my best to polish the silver overlay but I was not able to get all to shine up. There is still tarnish or some sort of dark discoloration over the silver overlay. I'm not sure if stronger polish will get it to come clean or not. Blue glass has some scratches and marks here and there. It is being sold"as is" as was found so please be sure you are ok with all before buying. I took photos from all sides so you can see exactly what you would receive as the winning bidder. Pair of cobalt blue crackle glass salt and pepper shakers with metal tops measure approximately 5" tall. Pinch waist with heavy crackle. The metal tops appear to have a brass finish and are topped with a small spike. Some finish loss to one. The other is tarnished. The glass is in mint condition- no damage or wear. NOTE: the glass is darker in person. It appears lighter because of a white background and flash.

Very unusual Lattice Work Silver Plate over Cobalt Blue Glass. Received decades ago as a gift. But have downsized and must purge my beloved possessions. Silver plate is in very good condition, unscratched, with a teeny dimple or two on one, but not noticeable at all. Bottom is stamped"UK PAT NO 20264" so I'm thinking these were probably made in the United Kingdom. Measures approximately 4 3/4" from base to top of filial. A rare pair of antique Gayner Glass Works of New Jersey cobalt blue vertical ribbed salt and pepper shakers with adjustable metal lids. Found at an estate sale. The excellent condition shakers date to the 1920s, and measure 1 3/4 inches across x 4 inch tall with lids. The glass shakers have heavy bottoms, and are signed with a"G" in a circle. The screw-on lids have a tiny raised lever that will slide to open and close the shaker holes. They have a burnished finish to them, so if they did have a chrome or silverplate finish in the past, it has worn off. No idea of age and origin, as they were found at an estate sale.
