Testrite compasses were made in both Germany and France but this particular one is marked"Made in France" on the dial. It was most likely manufactured in the 1930's or 1940's. The dial is silver plated metal unlike many which have a paper dial. The case is brass and measures 1-7/8" 47mm) in diameter x 3/8" 10mm) thick. It has a heavy, beveled edge, glass crystal. There is a ring loop(bail or bow) attached to the case at the South(S" marker on the dial. Fully functional and accurate with no liquid inside. It has a transit lock damper controlled by a lever on the side to prevent movement of the needle when you have fixed the position of the compass or when you are carrying it. The silver metal dial has indications/markers for the Cardinal and Half-Cardinal points. The needle is tinted dark blue for the North indication. The compass is in very nice condition. The bail or bow is secure. The crystal isn't chipped, cracked, flaked, or chiggered, the case is free of dents and dings, and the needle is sensitive and accurate. MARK This item is a real nice tapered shaker(probably meant for powdered sugar or a spice) With a nicely etched floral& leaf pattern. The top is a brass screw-on with an unusual(Cool! circle and star pattern. The holes are larger than would be for salt or pepper. The piece measures 5 3/4 tall x 2 3/4" wide at bottom x 1 7/8" at top. The top polished up very nicely, and can be a great display item. The bottom edge is marked E. J. B. for the E& J Bass Co. of NYC. I am not certain about the metal that the top is made from. The inside looks silverish in color, so I don't think it is solid brass. 4 Sets Antique Salt & Pepper Shakers/Sugar/Talc//Spice Jars with Brass Lids
I purchased these 43 years ago at an antique auction near Buffalo. NY. I am guessing they are from a fancy motel. However I have never been able to find any information on them other than them being pre 1910. I used them as spice jars. I have four sets plus one extra( nine total) and a couple of extra brass tops(the two extra lids in the photos are the ones that are somewhat polished) As shown in the pictures the shaker glass jars are marked with a L& F- some the marks are clearer than others. One is marked with a five point starburst in a circle but no letters. Some of the shakers show air bubbles which I tried to show in the photos. The brass lids show normal wear considering their age as do the tops with the perforations for salt and pepper. I found it perplexing that the glass shakers are marked with L& F on the bottom and it ... moreappears that the Art Nouveau monogram on the brass lids appear to be L& F as well. I do not know what would cause the defects on the top that I show in photos the top is not cracked. it is not sharp light little chips but you can feel them. not greatly visible when item on shelf for use at all It functions fine. marked on bottom brass made in France. I show with tape measure so you can see size. it does come apart for cleaning. there is some wear on the finish(like a clear coat finish applied to the brass years back to prevent tarnish. brass polish removes the finish and can polish the brass if desired but it is fine the way it is. emai lany questions.
