Taught Mathematics at Pennsylvania College the precursor of U Penn, served as Chief Engineer of several railroads and tunnels of importance. During the Civil War he created the dept for coordinating the Railroads as a Volunteer Colonel, was promoted to Brigadier General in 1862. His assistance in keeping trains of supplies and equipment to McClellans army at Antietam and Meade's army at Gettsyburg was deemed critical to their success's in those battles. He jumped on one of the trains with the wounded to Washington and was the first man to arrive in the Capitol with news of the defeat of Lee's army at Gettysburg on July 3rd! The drill he created and shown here was given the top prize at the Royal Polytecnic Society in England! CIVIL WAR ERA DOUBLE PERFUME BOTTLES IN ORIGINAL BLUE VELVET & GLASS BOX, LOOK!
This is a really beautiful pair of floral etched perfume bottles with ground glass stoppers in a original blue velvet. Satin lined carrying box with heavy BRASS handle, clasp, handle, around the entire bevelled glass front. The box is 6" high x 4" across. The bottles sit in a gathered satin interior, mirror on back wall of box. This was a really quality vanity gift and I believe this is PRE-CIVIL WAR. probably 1850 making this set around 170 yrs old! the bottles themselves The bottles are over 3" The blue velvet as seen in the pics is very worn and there is a horizontal crack inn the beveled glass. The perfume bottles are in wonderful shape. NO CRACKS, NO ChIPS. I don't think they have ever been used, no perfume residue. This set could be even much older than I think. 12.95 sh&ins. thanks.

Antique Glass Victorian Tear Vial Bottle Mourning lachrymatory Square sided Glass Victorian tear bottle with Gold detailing. Lachrymatory Bottles have been found in ancient tombs and were for collecting tears at funerals. Often seen in a perfume collection as well. But was not the original purpose. It measures 5 ½ inches long. Wear commensurate with age. Other items in the last photo are available this week in my other auctions and not included in this listing. Antique CIVIL WAR ERA Gold Gilt Cut Glass LACHRAMATORY BOTTLE OR SCENT FLASK
Item Description While starting bids may vary I ALWAYS POST WITH NO RESERVE! Up for auction is a heavy. Hand made glass Lachrymatory bottle or Scent flask. Most of these were from the Civil War era(1861- 1865) but also popular during the Victorian Era in Europe(1831- 1901) which encompassed our Civil War Era. While we were shedding tears in ours waiting for loved ones to come home from the war ~ the English were also filling similar style bottles with tears during mourning and once the tears evaporated the mourning period was over. The true Lachrymatories were started by the Greeks and Romans who also shed tears into them during the mourning procession. Reference to these bottles were even made in the Old Testament. Most are"rugged" and by no means perfectly made ~ but they were handmade ~ and that is what gives them such character. ... moreMuch later, similar style bottles were also used to home perfume. This one is heavily pained in gold design and much of it remains. No chips to the glass but you will see what looks like deep scratches- these are not cracks but are usually the results of crudely fashioning the hot glass making"folds" in it. This one does not have a stopper, which is not unusual to have lost these tiny things over the years. The bottle is 6 3/4 inches long/tall and 1/2 inch wide. Antique Gilded Glass 7 in Lachrymatory Civil War Victorian Era Tear Catcher
Listed here is an Antique 7" Long Civil War Victorian Era Glass Lachrymatory Tear Catcher Bottle with a Beautiful Floral& Gold Trimmed Surface! This is in excellent condition for it's age with no cracks or dings. Just slightly dirty on the inside and the cork cap can not be removed because the top half is broken off. About Tear Catchers. Tear bottles were fairly common in Roman times. Around the time of Christ, when mourners filled small glass bottles or cups with tears and placed them in burial tombs as symbols of respect. Sometimes women were even paid to cry into these vessels, as they walked along the mourning procession. Those crying the loudest and producing the most tears received the most compensation, or so the legend goes. The more anguish and tears produced, the more important and valued the deceased person was perceived ... moreto be. Tear bottles reappeared during the Victorian period. When those mourning the loss of loved ones would collect their tears in bottles with special stoppers that allowed the tears to evaporate. When the tears had evaporated.
