At first note,appears to be a perfume vial, however,this is known as a tear catcher" lachrymatory" which was a very popular mourning custom for the many brides who lost soldiers in the war. Made to catch tears, and then sprinkle them on the loved one's grave, just a great piece of history. Heavy lead crystal. With gilded design,as shown,measuring 6 3/4" long with stopper on. and amazingly enough,has original ground end stopper which fits snugly into vial. No chips,cracks,no repair, the mouth of the vial shows some rough edges which looks original to ground. the gild is very good.most of wear is located on one side. Offered for auction is an old Victorian glass vial with its original stopper. These are called lachrymatories or tear catchers. From what I've researched there are several stories to go along with these. The most common one is during the Victorian era. At a more upscale funeral these vials were handed out to save the tears you've shed for the deceased. When the tears are collected in the vial, the stopper would be put in. Once the tears completely evaporated meant the end of the mourning period. This vial is found in great condition with no chips or cracks. It measures 7" with the stopper. 6 3/4" without. Some of the gold guild is gone, and some faded. The stopper is original to this vial. It looks like the end of it is a bit rough, it may have a small piece broken off. Two sides of this vial have x's that are etched ... morein and trimmed in gold. Also on those same sides in-between the x's are indentions for your fingers. 6.5" long tear catcher vial. Has one very small chip in the lip. Has some dirt on inside of vial. Bottom crudely ground but polished. Main body features four divets on two of the sides for better thumb and forefinger grip. The two sides with grips also have three Xs per that are gilded. A lot of the gold has rubbed off. The stopper area looks like the inside was ground but not polished in two areas. The only reason I can think this was done was to add better grip for the cork. Victorian blown glass lachrymatory mourning tear catcher W/DAUBER! EXC COND!
Up for auction is a stunning gorgeous Victorian-era tear catcher. Also called a lachrymatory. From Wikipedia: A lacrymatory[lachrymatory is] a small vessel of terracotta or glass found in Roman and late Greek tombs. Thought to have been used to collect the tears of mourners at funerals. This tear catcher is in fabulous condition. The dauber or stopper is in perfect original condition. The vial was hand blown and twisted. Flat spots were ground into the surface to accommodate the decorations. It was then adorned with thin stringers of melted glass to make decorative dots on the surface in orange. Yellow, white and blue. The bottom was ground to smooth the spot where the vial was initially connected to a long glass rod during the lampworking process. There is slight damage as follows: The gold paint shows minor wear. There are two small chips ... moreon the top surface of the neck that are in such strange spots that I wonder if the spots were intentionally ground by the craftsperson. Ostensibly to help the tears flow into the vial. One of the spots is 1/16" in diameter, the other is 2mm. The stopper/dauber is 2 3/4" long. The blue color is nothing short of awesome looking. Many people collect tear catchers. Which aren't that plentiful because being made of glass, many of them have broken. Their history from the Civil War era is steeped in romanticism. When a soldier left to go to war. He would give his wife or girlfriend a tear catcher, which she would fill with her tears to show how much she missed him upon his safe return. 19th c. Ottoman Beykoz Glass LACHRYMATORY TEAR CATCHER OR SCENT BOTTLE/Stopper
This is a rare Turkish Ottoman Beykoz Glass Scent Bottle or Tear Catcher/Lachrymatory Lachrymosa. A tear catcher was common to use in Victorian times to capture the tears someone mourning the loss of a loved one. After the mourning time passed the tears collected would be sprinkled on the loved ones grave as a remembrance. I am not certain if the bottle was originally made as a perfume bottle and used for tears or vice versa. Either way these bottles are quite rare to find today and especially in this good condition with the original stopper as they are usually lost or broken. The cut glass bottle is four sided with gold gilding on all four sides as well as on the stopper with thumb indents on two of the sides. The other two flat sides are painted with a leaf vine design. Bottle measures 7" tall including the stopper. 5/8" wide ... moreacross. The gilding is surprisingly intact for an item of this age. Beykoz glassware began to be produced at glass workshops in Beykoz during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Selim III(1789-1807) This glassware. Made of both opaline and transparent glass, is characterized by both cut and painted designs in either polychrome or gold. Since it was first produced Beykoz ware has been sought after and antique examples can today be seen in museum and private collections.

These little vials are said to have been used as perfume bottles or as tear catchers during a time of mourning in the Civil War era. It measures 5-1/4” long overall(including the stopper) x 11/16” across at the widest point. The condition is very good with no chips, nicks, cracks, breaks, touch-ups or repairs. Early 1800's French hand blown glass perfume vial with ground glass stopper. Measures 8" with the stopper. The glass is thick& heavy which is consistent with that time period. The gold gilt has worn off in spots which is also consistent with age& use. I could find no chips. Cracks or other flaws. Please review the photos for a more complete description. 1880 Victorian Gold Gilt Glass Mourning Lachrymatory Tear-Catcher Perfume Bottle
Up for your consideration is a wonderful 1887 Victorian Era Gold Gilt Glass Lachrymatory/Tear-Catcher/Perfume Bottle. Tears for a loved one could be collected for a period of time. Then sprinkled over the grave site or allowed to evaporate. After this period of time, grieving could be considered complete. This little treasure is in very good antique condition. There is one chip 1mm deep and 1cm long on the base. Some of the gold guiding has worn off. It measures 6 inches long by about a half inch wide. Please see pictures and email with any questions!

The lip has what looks like a natural chip from when the blowpipe was snapped from the lip. The chip was refired/smoothed and top surface around the lip was highlighted with gold enamel.
