A small pharmacy was opened in New York city and sold perfumes, cosmetics and assorted toiletries. Richard Hudnut, the son of the proprietor of the shop, became the first American selling luxury perfume presentations, though some of these were created in France) in an elegant shop which was directly influenced by the French and European perfumeries. In 1916. The company was sold to Henry& Gustavus Adolphus Pfeiffer and Richard Hudnut was no longer involved in the business. ... moreAs a result of this, Gustavus Adolphus became the president of the Richard Hudnut Company. In the 1920s, the company had expanded into Europe, and acquired the French style. The company proudced several luxurious presentations during the 1920s but the quality of designs declined gradually starting in the 1930s and right on thru to the 1950s. When Richard Hudnut opened a new shopat 20 rue de la Paix. Paris in 1927, he introduced four new blends of perfumes called Le Debut. Each perfume was of the same Art Deco octagonal shape, but had it's own color to suggest four different moods. Original boxes are rare to find, but if you are lucky enough you might find that Le Debut Vert came in a green box, Le Debut Blanc came in a white box, Le Debute Noir came in a red box and Le Debut Bleu came in a blue box. This beautiful Art Deco clear and ribbed rectangular glass bottle is circa 1929. The name of the perfume is written, in script, on the front of the distinctive bottle in white colored paint/enamel. The original, ball shaped, gold tone metal, screw top cap is on the bottle. There is a back label that reads: 1/4 oz SDA CT. 466. The bottle holds 1/4 ounce. I personally have never seen anything quite like it. And I do know many perfume bottle! Metal is heavy and the glass is held inside the cup by metal wrapped string. Ribbon and label on the purple ribbon are all original. Metal cap comes off as it should. There is still some perfume residue inside the glass. No chips. Cracks, dings, dents, or repairs. Here we have an antique 8oz Lander glass perfume bottle in Sweet Pea. It has a paper label that reads. Sweet Pea, Toilet Water, Lander, Fifth Avenue, New York" and measures approximately 6-1/2" tall and has a base of 2-3/4" wide. This bottle is not common, as we were not able to find much on the internet. However, we were able to find that Lander was established in 1920 by entrepreneur Charles Oestrich, who wanted to make beauty products affordable to women everywhere. At this time, the company specialized in perfumes and cosmetics and by the 1930's, Lander was a household brand that you could find at any local"5& 10" dime stores across the country. It was during this time that these glass perfume bottles were most often found. This beautiful Lander bottle still has its original paper label and glass stopper. ... moreAfter all of these years. The bottle still holds the scent it used to hold! The label shows its age, and the stopper has a small chip, as pictured. The cork seems to have degraded and stuck in the neck of the bottle, and there are bits of cork debris inside the bottle as well.
