As found in a local estate and believed to be an ancient piece from Western Mexico, approximately ... moretwo thousand years old. The dog is fat- or pregnant- with a hollow body in aggressive stance with tail that forms a spout. The dog's eyes and mouth are incised into the clay. Dog effigies such as this were buried in tombs in the belief that dogs were an important guide into the afterlife of the deceased. Both of the dog's ears are chipped; one with minor loss. The other more significantly. Two legs have been re-glued; the repairs are rough and amateur, and the break lines appear to have had some loss and are not well-aligned. The burnished reddish brown exterior is mottled and veined. And the interior is encrusted with mineral sediment. The dog came to me without information on its history or provenance. But shows many indications of its age. It's a fascinating piece that is sure to complement any collection. Two legs repaired somewhat roughly. One ear is broken. The other is chipped. The metal holders at the bottom move like scissors to mimic sex(see sequence of pictures) I don’t know what kind of metal this is. The metal holders are brown. There is some red on the front and back of this item. I’m selling this“as is” since I do not know much about it beyond my description and the gallery inventory card has no information. TWO ANTIQUE WOODEN CARVED BIRDS, HORNBILLS?, AFRICAN? PACIFIC? INDONESIAN?
I have on offer here a pair of intriguing hand carved birds. I believe they may be hornbills but I am unsure of this. I really have little knowledge of this kind of antique. They could be African or Pacific and they could possibly be ironwood. But again I don't know. They certainly have some age to them. They are just over 12 inches in height and as you can see they are hand carved and so are slightly different. Please look at the photos which are an accurate representation of them. Condition wise they are pretty good I would say. There is some whitening in some of the carving which could be old wax. There are some wormholes though not many which indicate age and are quite surprising really as it feels quite hard wood. And the smaller based one has been damaged and glued back on but is barely visible. Again please refer to the photos. ... moreIt may be that these are very early tourist pieces. I just don't know, but they feel early 1900's to me although that is just a guess. They could be older or later. Any information on these would be appreciated. Vintage Swiss Framed Fabric Flag
Neat framed vintage fabric piece that belonged to my Swiss grandfather who was born in 1911. I am not sure exactly what it is. But it appears to be a warrior maiden with a shield bearing the Swiss flag. In some places the red has run into the surrounding areas but other than that, it appears to be in good vintage shape. Family of Hand Carved Elephants Here we have for auction a delightful little family of hand carved elephants. In either ebony, or a similar dark wood, with tusks and eyes made of ox bone and with the largest elephant's toe nails also of ox bone. They are a lovely family set. And although we are not sure of their precise age, these sorts of ebony and ebonized carved figures were popular in the 1930s and 1940s, with travellers visiting India. They have been very well hand carved- the largest piece has the most intricate carving- its trunk, legs and back are carved and its ears are beautifully detailed. The other smaller elephants are not so intricately detailed, though all have their bone eyes intact and their tusks, although the very ends of some have been slightly chipped and the rear left toe of the 2nd largest also has a small chip. ... moreOne of the baby elephants has had one tusk re-glued, which will need some attention, as the glue has yellowed(see pics) The largest piece stands 9cm tall and 10cm long. Rare beyop discs from Arunachal Pradesh - NO India
You are bidding on two beyop discs from the Minyong. An Adi tribe in Arunachal Pradesh, Northeast India. The diameter oft he bigger one is about 5.5 cm and that oft he smaller one about 4.5 cm. Both are cast of a metal alloy and have a circular motif and a cross on the front side. The circles appear also on the backside of the smaller one whereas the backside of the bigger one is plain. On top of both pieces a second disc. Bent to form atube, is fixed which allows the beyops to be worn on a girdle or a rope. Beyop discs are worn by young women until they give birth to the first child.They were hairlooms and passed on over generations. Especially the small disc is worn extremely thin from long use. Great design! Stylized Aso dogs that form a really knarly and interesting pattern. Typical of Dayak art. There are at least 200 trade beads attached to it for decoration and 4 flat disc shell buttons on each side of the beadwork. The back is mid-century old cotton trade fabric. Remember that they were still Headhunters in the sixties! This is a used. Authentic baby carrier. The beadwork in 70 to 80 years old and difficult to find now days, and comparable examples are expensive in Indonesia. The Dayak will sell the beadwork separately because believe that to be the most valuable part of the artifact. The whole artifact is really more valuable. 12 3/4" x 15" x 7 1/2" Great piece for any tribal art collector. Hope it finds a good home. He is the king of the spirits, leader of the hosts of good, and enemy of Rangda, the demon queen and mother of all spirit guarders in the mythological traditions of Bali. The battle between Barong and Rangda is featured in Barong dance to represent the eternal battle between good and evil. This mask or carving is carved on the back in a manner to allow for a person to look through the mouth so I guess it could be used as a mask but it is very heavy. It is well carved.
