If you have not noticed. I'll point out right away, this has some damage. The left side is missing the end piece. A replacement probably can be carved, but of course, it will not be the same. Looked like it happend a very long time ago. The sides show dovetail jointing, all appears hand carved. Each row of beads has what I'm guessing is a Chines symbol for numbers carved into the wood. This may have been made in the US, or brought here by Chinese immigrants. I live in an old mining area of California, and many Chinese folks were brought in during the gold rush. An interesting old wood mask. I have no idea of its origins, the old lady I bought it from at a garage sale said her husband got it from East Africa, but then again she said it may have been Tibet. I'm no expert! nor am I a dealer I just like old and interesting things. the wood is very light. There are traces of a black" resin" that at one time was on the front of the mask, there are splits to the wood on the front only, they do not go through, the back has dust dirty marks and staining, chip to the left side as seen. And to the right side where string has been tied. 26 cms x 12 or 10ins x 6ins appx if you can tell me where this comes from I will be delighted.

The picture on the cut wood with precious stones from South Ural
DETAIL: The region of the Southern Urals of(Siberia) Russia has been famous for centuries for its production of high quality emeralds. Sapphires, alexandrite, topaz, zircon, and other semi-precious gemstones. The gemstone are not only mined in the Southern Urals, they are oftentimes hand cut as well. This gorgeous landscape"painting" is composed of the tiny chips which are the by-product of cutting and faceting these gemstones. Following traditional methods generations old, artisans in the region of Siberia hand make these landscape paintings by applying crushed and chipped gemstones to a"canvas" of wood. Even the blues of the sky is ground lapis lazuli. UNUSUAL ETHNIC ANTIQUE SLIPWARE POTTERY JAR 11.5cm high x 11.5cm wide Made of buff coloured clay with applied reddish brown slip clay with incised decoration of four identical tribal figures. The incising is known as scraffito technique which reveals the different coloured clay underneath. The pot has been applied with a clear glaze to the interior and the rim. It is a bulky wedding bracelet- specific for the Bulgarian national jewelry between 1850-1900. It is called"Rogatka" Rogatka" solid bracelet with two curved top. Which in casting are left hollow. Only the maiden bracelets are placed inside additional small balls. With the movement of the wrist they jingle slightly and that was a scar that you are not married. This one has a beautiful patina and looks very original. T he metal coating is not brushed to preserve the authentic look. Even has a smell of an old subject. Uno de los pocos lugares donde aun perdura dicha técnica. La base está hecha con madera de Nogal, está forrada interiormente en terciopelo y la incrustaciones son de: Nacre- Palo de Rosal- Palo de Olivo- Palo de Limonero- Palo de Pino Tiene un acabado en barniz. Taracea es una técnica artesanal aplicada al revestimiento de pavimentos, paredes, muebles, esculturas y objetos artísticos. En la labor se utilizan piezas cortadas de distintos materiales(piedras, mármol, madera, metales. que se van encajando en un soporte hasta realizar el diseño decorativo. Es un trabajo de incrustación. Entre unas piezas y otras hay un efecto de contraste que ... moredepende del color y la característica del material empleado. En la taracea no se ve el lecho de base entre una pieza y otra incrustada, como ocurre con el mosaico. Se corta el material que va a ir incrustado con la forma del diseño, se coloca sobre la superficie o soporte y se dibuja el contorno. Una vez plasmado el dibujo en el soporte, se vacía ligeramente, dejando un hueco donde se incrustará la taracea; después se alisa y se allana el conjunto para que la superficie quede rasa. Se tiene noticia de trabajo de taracea de la época sumeria en Mesopotamia(3000 años adC) y de la dinastía Ming(1368-1644) en China. Se difundió por Asia Menor(actual Turquía) y más tarde los romanos la adoptaron cuando entraron en contacto con el mundo helenístico. Llamaron a este arte incrustatio o loricatito. Plinio el Viejo hace una extensa descripción de esta técnica en su obra Naturalis historia. Las piezas con que se hacían las incrustaciones, las llama crustae. Have you ever heard of the town of Fray Bentos? tinned pie fame) This family were part of a number of British families who moved to South America to cash in on the meat trade in the early 1900's. Bull fighting was banned in Uruguay in 1912 and these so i was told were picked up the great grandfather who moved over there in 1910. These seldom come to the market in this country. Spear tips are rusted in places Number of old holes and the paper wraps are torn in places Condition is good- some old wear& tear in places- some rusting of the tips. Here is a winter robe/ overcoat which was made in the 19 c in Bulgaria. Bulgaria was back then under Otoman power(for the previous 5 centuries) so the kulture and traditions were very similar. It belonged to a woman. Wool with velvet at collar and some decoration at the end of the sleevs and coat hem. It is in quite poor condition, it has thinning, holes, etc.It can only be used as a source of historical/cultural information about textiles, fashion and traditions in t he region.I can say that the silouette of the coat has left from it mostly.I love it though, it has the energy of the old times in itself.
