Here is a winter robe/ overcoat which was made in the 19 c in Bulgaria. Bulgaria was back then under Otoman power(for the previous 5 centuries) so the kulture and traditions were very similar. It belonged to a woman. Wool with velvet at collar and some decoration at the end of the sleevs and coat hem. It is in quite poor condition, it has thinning, holes, etc.It can only be used as a source of historical/cultural information about textiles, fashion and traditions in t he region.I can say that the silouette of the coat has left from it mostly.I love it though, it has the energy of the old times in itself. Family of Hand Carved Elephants Here we have for auction a delightful little family of hand carved elephants. In either ebony, or a similar dark wood, with tusks and eyes made of ox bone and with the largest elephant's toe nails also of ox bone. They are a lovely family set. And although we are not sure of their precise age, these sorts of ebony and ebonized carved figures were popular in the 1930s and 1940s, with travellers visiting India. They have been very well hand carved- the largest piece has the most intricate carving- its trunk, legs and back are carved and its ears are beautifully detailed. The other smaller elephants are not so intricately detailed, though all have their bone eyes intact and their tusks, although the very ends of some have been slightly chipped and the rear left toe of the 2nd largest also has a small chip. ... moreOne of the baby elephants has had one tusk re-glued, which will need some attention, as the glue has yellowed(see pics) The largest piece stands 9cm tall and 10cm long. If you have not noticed. I'll point out right away, this has some damage. The left side is missing the end piece. A replacement probably can be carved, but of course, it will not be the same. Looked like it happen a very long time ago. The sides show dovetail jointing, all appears hand carved. Each row of beads has what I'm guessing is a Chinese symbol for numbers carved into the wood. This may have been made in the US, or brought here by Chinese immigrants. I live in an old mining area of California, and many Chinese folks were brought in during the gold rush. This beautifully hand-woven Market basket/bag(yesterday's answer to the tote bag) has been with me all of my 81 years. For the past 50 years it has been packed in a suitcase my grandmother took on a cruise in 1933 from San Francisco to New York. By way of the Panama Canal. It could have been purchased on that trip. But she also lived in San Diego off& on from 1916 to 1935, so I suppose it could have been an early item from Mexico. However, I now live in SD and have not seen anything like this from Mexico. The bag was no doubt done with vegetable dyes and the horizontal stripes are in natural. Red, terracotta, yellow ochre, olive green and another of grass green. You are buying an antique Philippine sword and scabbard. It measures approximately 40" long sheathed by 2& 1/4" diameter. The blade measures approximately 21" long by 1&3/8" wide with semi sharp blade and has maker or tribe markings at hilt and blade spine neat tip. The scabbard is ornately hand carved with foliage and floral designs on sides and scales on edges. The handle has unique geometric patterns. The cross guard and throat ring are brass. It has been painted with a gloss black enamel that is fade from age and has some scuff marks and white paint transference in spots. The pommel has a small hole at center and probably has a brass decoration piece attached to it originally. Judging from the design and ornate carving and blade edge. I would guestimate it is from the early 1900's era and was likely a dress ... moresword. Antique hand made Romanian traditional blouse /open work from Transylvania
Antique hand embroidered on homespun fabric Romanian traditional blouse from Transylvania/ West Plains of Transylvania. Hand embroidered with white cotton thread on flax/ cotton made at home fabric. It is closed around the neck with tie strings. Was restored by adding under armpits gussets in order to make it larger from the shoulder to under armpits. It is an antique blouse made probably at the beginning of the years 1900. All those antique blouses had a different cut compared with the actual women's sizes. The antique blouses from Transylvania are XS- S in actual women's size and in order to become wearable later. The under armpits gussets was replaced with larger ones. Age: 80- 100 years. Condition: nice vintage condition. A tinny stain on the back of the blouse, gussets replaced.
