Nicely Preserved Genuine 15th or 16th Century Ming Dynasty Chinese Green Glazed“Sancai” Statuette of a Man(Probably Originally Holding a Banner. Sun Shade or Canopy) CLASSIFICATION: Sancai Glazed Ceramic Statuette. ATTRIBUTION: Ancient China. Ming Dynasty, 15th or 16th Century. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 200 millimeters(8 inches) Breadth: 61 millimeters(2 3/8 inches) Thickness: 49 millimeters(2 inches) Base: 51 x 49 millimeters(approximately 2 inches square) CONDITION: Exceptionally good! No major blemishes. Breakage, or repairs; however quite a number of modest chips. A little wear consistent with any funerary item which is over five(perhaps close to six) centuries in age including the customary little blemishes characteristic of handcrafted ancient porcelain. A little glaze crazing/crackling as is common with ancient porcelain. Not flawless, ... morebut certainly in a better than average state of preservation. DETAIL: A nicely preserved sancai glazed statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Ming Dynasty artwork. Sancai. Or three-color glazes principally in yellow, green and brown was a development of the Tang Dynasty(618-907 AD) Sancai(three-colored" wares were first made for burial, using lead-based glazes that produced mottled and streaky effects in green, amber-brown, and cream, with an occasional addition of blue or black. The production of such exquisite porcelain items required multiple firings of fine white clay at temperatures near 1000c(1800f) degrees. A wide variety of statuettes were commonly produced such as musicians, chamberlains(butlers) maids, cooks, even animals; all designed to serve their deceased master. In early Tang dynasty. On a painted metal custom stand. Circa 1890- 1910. This example is of museum quality and features an elegant. Thin, and proportionate, realistically made, miniature kayak with the Inuit hunter in place. The boat is made of sealskin, sewn with sinew over a wooden frame. The hunting implements and double paddle are made of wood with bone tips. The Eskimo doll is of carved wood and wearing a realistic hand-sewn linen cloth parka. The carved features of the dolls face are extremely well-done. Giving this piece a personality and ... morelife-like quality. CONDITION: Excellent ethnographic condition as shown in the photographs. Light overall wear and several small brown spots to the clothing. Overall aged patina to the sealskin and the wood surfaces. No restoration. Please see the close-up photos for condition. Kayak models were traditionally made by the Inuit to use as teaching aids and instruction of young male hunters in the art of using a kayak during maritime hunting trips. Two vintage 1950's pottery Turkish mugs beautifully decorated with Iznik design. Beautiful pieces getting harder to find, the tallest stands at almost 5 1/2" by 5 1/4 from the body to edge of handle. The other is 5" by 4 3/4" same places. The condition is very good, no chips or cracks except some crazing to the glaze due to age. Almost never seen intact. I got this in central Bulgaria near Veliko Turnovo, a rare treat as a great example of 19th C primitive folk art in the Balkan hill regions, similar in many ways to American Indian clay art of the same period. Almost 11" tall. The brown base may have been touched up as there is a glossy sheen to part and a roughness(shown in the frontal view) but not a crack or fissure. Very rare indeed. Afghanistan Gourd Powder Flask with Niello Silver Top
This is an unusual powder flask from Afghanistan. With wonderful niello work and Islamic writing that says"Praises Be To God" on the silver. Niello is the art of removing sections of the silver, and replacing it with silver oxide, that creates a black background. It was used extensively by Russian and Turkish silversmiths, as well as by the French. Some fine niello work also comes from Thailand. Afghanistan is an unusual location for this type of fine silver work. The stopper is decorated with niello, as is the collar of the gourd. There is a strand of red and clear glass beads wrapped around the neck. The flask measures 5 inches long. And has the beaded cord on the stopper. The gourd is a mellowed golden brown color. ANTIQUE FIRED GLASS AND ENAMELED CZECH TEAPOT
This is a very rare piece. It is a beautiful. Antique teapot from Czechoslovakia, circa 1920. It is enameled and then they anneal glass on top of the enamel and swirl it. The top of the teapot is in good condition, though there are a few small spots where it feels like the enamel or glass didn't fully cover the surface. It is unseen by the human eye, but can be felt. There is a spot or two on the rim and a small spot on the spout, again which can't be seen, but can be felt. On the bottom. There is a fingernail size where the enamel has come off. The rest of the darkness seen on the perimeter is dirt from age. The teapot needs to be cleaned, but I'm not so sure it should have more than a swipe with a damp cloth. You do not want to remove any natural patina that is on the teapot. The teapot itself is one piece. And top another. ... moreIn the picture it looks like the bottom is two pieces welded together, but it is one solid piece. It is marked"Elite" And has laurel with a book in between the laurel. Underneath is says"Czechoslovakia" REG'D, and the number 18801. I was offered $100 by a dealer, but passed as another told me it was worth between $200- $250.00, but made no offer.
