Integrity entirely intact. No significant chips or cracks. Minor surface crazing. Professionally conserved. Can be sealed upon request. DETAIL: This is a very beautiful. Intricately detailed gray clay tile from the Liao Dynasty of ancient China. These clay tiles were used to decorate the inside walls of Buddhist shrines. The depiction is somewhat reminiscent of a Hindu depiction. Of course Buddhism came to China from Hindu India, and there exist of course many parallels between the Chinese and Indian variants of Buddhism. The depiction is of eight bodhisattvas of various sizes. There is a little surface crazing and a few minute chips; but no cracks or major chips. It is constructed of very strong sintered clay produced using a very special technique often employed to produce strengthened steel. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other ceramic artwork was quite popular in Victorian Europe. Carrying Chinese porcelain from China to Europe was an industry for the seafaring mariners of the 16th. 17th, and 18th centuries. Entire fleets of sailing ships plied the trade, especially the Dutch and English. However in addition to porcelain, ancient Chinese ceramics were also extremely popular in Vi

It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. You'll note the engraved concentric circle on the center of the applique. This concentric circle was intended to provide the wearer a charm providing protection against the effects of"an evil eye" There was an ancient belief that some evil sorcerers or witches had the ability to transmit evil with ju

W. Ceram. Translated from the German by Richard and Clara Winston. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 279 pages. Publisher: Knopf; 1956) ISBN: 0880295937. The Secret of the Hittites" returns to the startling panorama of the author's first book. Gods, Graves, and Scholars" in the continued examination of the most ancient world known to man. Since the publication of C. W. Ceram's famous first work, a new discovery of enormous significance transformed the perception of ancient history. The darkest archaeological riddle of the Orient is on the verge of an ultimate and improbable resolution. And this with dramatic suddenness in the space of a few momentous years. The mysterious ruins discovered in central Turkey in 1834 were perplexing. Yet no one was willing to ascribe them to the Hittites, a people given scant acknowledgement in the Bible and dismissed as a minor Syrian tribe. It was not until 1880 that a hero of archaeology advanced the dynamic theory that there had once been a mighty Hittite Empire stretching from the Black Sea to Damascus. By 1910, only archaeologists and historians had begun to gain a faint and fragile knowledge of its lost history. Furthermore. Only in the years since 1946 has there been any hope of reading the fantastic Hittite hieroglyphic inscriptions, and only recently has anyone actually done so. Finally, almost twenty centuries after Christ, we know that twenty centuries before Christ the Indo-European Hittites descended into Asia Minor. We may now establish a third great empire beside the Babylon of Hammurabi and the Egypt of Ramses II read the first fragments of a profound unknown literature, of which Mr. Ceram provides stirring excerpts. The truth about Kadesh as one of the few battles that truly shaped world history is now known to us. The first great political treaty. Betwee

Not flawless, but certainly in a better than average state of preservation– and unrepaired! Stands on its own. DETAIL: A nicely preserved clay statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Sui-Tang Dynasty statuary. The statuette depicts a man performing a martial arts move. Something akin to contemporary“mushu” The roots of mushu martial arts extends back at least 4,000 years, and this statuette reflects that heritage. Once painted, it appears that the body was perhaps painted all white or principally white, as it seems that there remains some residual paint beneath the soil deposition layer. However most of the paint this statuette originally possessed has oxidized/decomposed. It does stand on its own, but precariously, you would want to give it some support or something to lean on, as otherwise it does topple easily. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Production of both painted and sancai glazed figurines dominated the pottery scene, and their production continued well into the Ming era which advanced the art with more intense colors and finer porcelain clay. Petite(four-cup, or two mug) hand painted“famille rose” style porcelain teapot so wonderfully characteristic of the very popular export Qing Dynasty porcelain china. The particular style was extremely popular both in England as well as the USA during the 1800’s. This is a wonderful example of this very famous produce. The glaze is entirely intact, a very colorful park setting quite characteristic of Ming and Qing Dynasty porcelain. The depiction consists of six different people(including what appears to be one child) seemingly involved in leisure activities in a setting which includes shrubs, a fence, etc. Again, a quite typical depiction of an idyllic park setting. The condition of the pot is very good. There is an old repair(we did not made the repair) to a rim chip at the top rim. You can see it in the photographs. Notwithstanding the repaired chip, the porcelain glaze is otherwise in very good condition, still brightly colored, not oxidized or crackled. There are of course a few minor scuffs, marks, dings, etc. as well as a few of the ordinary potting blemishes(warts, dimples, pimples and pits) again really not noticeable, and quite typical of hand-crafted porcelain of the late Ming/ea

Antique 19th C. 1800s Native, First Nations, Canadian beaded leather belt
This is an antique Native American(or to be more specific. Native Canadian/Aboriginal/First Nations) beaded leather belt. This was an estate piece from a local collector. I was not able to find out a whole lot about it, but did bring it to a local First Nations museum and store was told by the proprietor that the beadwork, style, and materials placed it in the late 1800s to early 1900s, and that was a woman's belt. It was entirely hand-sewn and hand beaded, no evidence or modern equipment or loom use, other than some"newer" metal hook-and-eye closures were added later in the itme's history to make the belt a couple inches shorter if necessary, probably in the 1930s to 1940s from their style. The proprietor could not be sure, but thought it was likely Plains Indian. I am selling this AS-IS, hopefully an expert will know more ... moreabout it. It measures approximately 34" long, by approximately. 2.5" wide. The inner liner is leather. The top is some kind of rough textured fabric with the bead patterns sewn on. It has a 3-button closure and the buttons look to be made of bone. Has a couple small holes and some areas of minor damage and wear. Please see pics. The leather is still fairly supple. I have a couple other pieces of antique First Nations items of around the same era, from the same estate I will be listing soon also. Please examine the pictures carefully, and ask any questions. Native art of this kind is not my area of expertise but I will answer to the best of my ability.
