Antique Turkestan Glazed Terracotta Plate Green Floral 19th Century An antique Turkestan polychrome glazed terracotta small plate decorated with a green floral design. The edge of the plate is detailed with a superb pie-crest pattern. Such pieces would have formed part of a home's traditional Turkestan tableware; stylistic influence from the Orient. Notably China are very obvious in some pieces and this, as early as the 9th century. Shaped on a very basic potter's wheel. The wares are then glazed and fired in a traditional kiln. The firing is done on a tripod and as a result three visible marks where the glaze is absent are visible at the center of the plate. We are not certain of their origin but suspect that they might originate in Ceylon or India. By comparison to others we have seen. There are no marking to indicate origin. They wood is very dense. It could possibly be lignum vitae. The large elephant stands 9" tall and weighs 7 1/2" The three smaller ones stand 6" tall and weigh 2 1/4# each. The large one is missing both tusks. Antique Carved Dragon and bird Design Tribal Blow Pipe 100cm long
349 Stunning blow pipe made from heavily hand carved cow/Ox bone in the design of a dragon with a bird that hangs below for the darts to go in. Crude animal carvings on the side of the pipe. It is very similar to the one used in the Pitch Black Film(2000) and their description is The Blow-Dart Pipe is a hunting tool. From northern Papua New Guinea. They are extremely rare, as the tribe that created them is now extinct. It is made of some form of cow bone. Has an Iron ran through the inside to create a tube. It brakes down into two pieces, possibly may have had a mouth piece or another tube extension, as this is very old, could have been lost over the ages. Width: 16cm This gong or tawak-tawak is typical of brasswork from Sarawak or Brunei on the island of Borneo and was cast using the lost wax process. Elaborately decorated on the face with creatures. The particularly prominent central boss and wide rim are typical of Malay gongs compared with Thai and Burmese gongs that are flatter and more shallow. The elaborate decoration on this gong contrasts with Malay brassware which is far more utilitarian. Subdued and in keeping with Islamic prohibitions on figurative art. Somewhat uncommon silver denarius produced in the city of Rome itself sometime between 201 and 206 A.D. when the future Emperor Caracalla was still just a young man, designed heir apparent and ruling jointly as“junior emperor” alongside his father, the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus. It is in exceptional condition, evidencing only the slightest wear from circulation in ancient Rome. It was well struck both front and back the result a little oblong, as was ordinarily the case(again, ancient Roman coins were individually hand struck) Nonetheless however the planchet(blank coin) was of very generous size, and as a result the strike uncharacteristically caught the entirety of both the thematic depictions as well as the legends. The ring bears a very elaborate stamped pattern on the sides of the band wrapping all of the way around to the back of the band. It is quite substantial, and the design of the ring and the detailed metal work evidenced in the bezel and bands is very elaborate! There is moderate wear to the sides and the back of the band. As you can see, the bowl not only has a delightful hand-painted floral design on the outside surface of the bowl, the inside sports a gorgeous and thick green porcelain glaze. If you look closely at the pictures here, you will see that there are a few very small rim chips. One of them is very tiny and requires a lot of searching to find it– even if you know it is there. It is a very tiny chip on the outside of the rim. There is a somewhat larger, though still quite small rim chip on the inside of the rim. These fine little rim chips are not only common in ancient porcelain. They’re almost obligatory. A bowl five centuries old without any such blemishes would almost be suspect outside of a museum. Nepelase Ghurra/ Neti. Butter Churn Support. Tribal Item. Length- 8.5inches. Origin- Nepal. Condition- Well used condition. There is a chip to the centre section. Background- Th roug hout the middle hills area of Nepal there is found the butter churn support. Known in Nepali as a"ghurra" They are also often referred to in the vernacular as"neti" Ghurra act as sort of axis for the churning rod. One end of the ghurra is tied to rope or cord. And the rope is in turn tied to a post, or some other fixed object. The churn's stick passes through the hole in the ghurra, with the churning end inserted into the butter jar. There is another churning rope tied around the churn stick in such a way that the two ends of the rope are held(one each) in the butter maker's two hands. Alternately pulling one end of the rope and then ... morethe other towards themselves causes the churning stick to twist back and forth. Churning the liquid into butter. The ghurra or neti is a common item. And was traditionally found in nearly every household in all regions of Nepal. What could be a simple wooden ring, as mechanically speaking that would be all that is required for such an implement, has evolved into a great domestic art form.
