There are simply the normal blemishes(bumps and dips) one expects with earthenware crudely fashioned by hand. Wooden Tribal Carving Of A Monkey, Dayak Culture Of Borneo - 19th Century.
A striking. Evocative and well provenanced wooden carving of a monkey, produced by the Dayak culture of Borneo, 19th century. This fascinating wooden carving has a sombre. Almost melancholic aura. Depicting a seated monkey grasping its face, this piece has been expertly carved. The abstracted features have an arresting and vivid appeal, the long muzzle and large ears are emphasized against the relatively slender limbs. The body itself has an almost human form, further stressing the unusual figure of the subject. Used as a guardian figure. This piece is a fantastic example of a fascinating and captivating culture. Known for their wood carving skills, the Dayak peoples erect human or animal figures near the entrances to their dwellings and along footpaths leading from their villages to the river. Known collectively as hampatong. The figures ... moreportray animals, ancestors and supernatural guardians who prevent dangerous spirits, particularly those bringing sickness, from entering community. Acquired during the 19th century. It is rare to find artefacts of this type on the private market with such firm provenance. A wonderful and fascinating piece. Condition: Very good. With stable crack running along right hand side of face and lower back(as shown) otherwise in excellent condition and unrestored. Height: 9 inches. Provenance: Formerly in the possession of Joseph Gerena. Mr. Gerena is a private gallery owner specializing in tribal art and artefacts. With over 35 years experience in his field. Amazing 19th century folding book made entirely from wood, African possibly?
A stunning folding book that appears to be entirely made of wood including the long extending pages. Folding up to 8 x 6 x 5 cm it extends to an amazing 250 cm. I don't have any idea what the language is. The wood for the covers at least are walnut I think and the patina is totally amazing. Clearly its been handled almost constantly as it has an amazing feel to it and has been shaped by being in hands or a pocket. I've had various people guess at it but thats all they have really been so if you have any information or idea as to what it is I'd love to hear from you. No damage of any kind. No splits, or repairs. Please examine all the close up pictures for exact condition. Please see my other items for more oriental art. Happy to combine postage. I am happy to ship well packed worldwide by insured airmail. The recent actions of ... morea few dishonest ebayers mean I need to set some ground rules. Please note that we ship within 5 working days after receiving payment. We are often away from home sourcing antiques midweek and simply cannot post next day. Our auctions end on a sunday and we ship thursday or friday as most buyers have paid by then although some take longer. We do however expect payment within 3 days where possible especially if we haven’t done business before. We ONLY ship by insured trackable airmail, please do not ask us to ship by any other cheaper method at your own risk, I’ve recently learnt that at your own risk means you will try and claim your money back after you’ve received your item unless I can prove delivery. We will usually try and combine shipping costs where possible for international post this means up to a limit of 2kg packed weight which is the limit for international parcels after which items go by courier which is far more expensive. We spend a lot of money every month on proper packing materials. We recover some of these costs through our postage charges as allowed by ebay however we pack and handle for free. Asian buyers please note that we no longer negotiate shipping price
