Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ and 3 inches in size. This specimen is over 3 inches tall! It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted. Engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. The typical blemishes of hand production(warts and dimples, zits and pits) DETAIL: A complete. Unrepaired medium sized impressed earthenware pot/jar in the style of the third or fourth century B.C. Warring States Period. The style of pot, the intricate impressing, and the grey clay color suggest it might be of Chou origin. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. In more ancient times, more often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. Later more sophisticated techniques such as this vessel saw wood blocks used to impress the design into the vessel. If you look closely at this vessel, you can see that indeed a wood block was used to impress the same design over and over again into the wet clay. You can see in many instance where the alignment of one block was not quite square with the next, some overlapping, others with a clear boundary between the impression blocks. It is a fairly large-sized piece. The size of a very large honeydew melon. Entirely intact except for a the normal potting blemishes associated with crude hand production; and assorted minor bumps and bruises consistent with wear due to ancient usage and then burial. DETAIL: A splendid. Magnificent, and rare smaller-sized painted earthenware bowl. Completely intact, the worst blemishes are a few chips in the paint– hardly unexpected of a bowl of this age which spent a significant portion of its life buried! Apparently attributable to pre-dynastic China, these bowls are generally not recovered intact, typically they are found shattered into fragments(shards) However this particular specimen was found intact. It’s about the size of a large grapefruit, and as you can see, the painted design is mostly intact. What’s really remarkable is that it is that despite its age it is nonetheless entirely intact, with no damage aside from the normal little bumps and bruises one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then buried. As well there are the normal blemishes(bumps, warts and acne pits) one expects with earthenware crudely fashioned by hand. There is very little of the crackling/crazing of the glaze which so oftentimes afflicts antique porcelain and ceramic finishes. There is of course a little minor wear– we’re not saying it is as when new. But this is as good as one can reasonably expect of a porcelain snuff bottle somewhere around 150 or 200 years old. SIZE: Approximately eleven faience tube beads range between 20 and 40 millimeters(3/4 to 1 ½ inches) in length. About 3 millimeters(1/8th inch) in diameter. About twelve disc beads about 4 millimeters in diameter. About 2 millimeters in thickness. 14kt gold fill memory wire, beads, findings. Total length about eight inches. CONDITION: Excellent. Unbroken beads relatively intact. Faience turquoise color well preserved. DETAIL: A bracelet of about eight inches length composed of sequentially-strung. A nice pair of heavy duty iron brackets. Each one weighs about 3.5 pounds. The wall side is about 11.25 inches long and 1 3/8 inch wide. The other leg is about 10.5 inches and 3/4 inch wide. These are old timers and do have some surface rust but that would buff off if the new owner so desires. There are no cracks. Breaks, nor anything else structurally wrong with these brackets. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. Antiques Primitive Miniature Child's Doll Sideboard Cupboard -Original Condition
This"one-of-a- kind" hand-made child's/doll miniature sideboard has it all. Decorated with milk paint in a warm blue hue and accented on four sides with hand-painted red and green flowers. It is a charming memento of early Americana. The step-back cupboard/ sideboard features a mirrored back flanked by two raised display shelves. Each shelf is held by two turned spindles. The top of the back splash is decorated with two simple. But colorful finials, pained in a deep maroon, which matches the maroon accents on the spindles. Each of the doors of the bottom piece swing wide open on sturdy. Intact hinges and facilitated by two tiny, original knobs. The doors feature hand-scored accents and simple hand-painted red and green flowers. Similar flowers decorate each side of the cupboard. The cupboard measures about 13& 1/2 inches ... morehigh from the bottom to the tip of the finials. It is about 11 inches wide and 6& 1/2 inches deep. This miniature cabinet is in great condition. Nothing is missing and everything is sound and sturdy. There is some wear along the edges and the paint shows"alligatoring" of the finish. However. These items are unique and some rare. They are all in great shape and the tie pin is a whale hand carved. The earrings are flowers. the necklace is a heart and the ring is also a heart and a size 7. This is not a business. We are just 2 people with full time jobs who enjoy a hobby selling items we have picked up at rummage sales, estate sales, etc. I enjoy finding vintage items but don't have room for collections, so I love to pass these items on to homes where they will be treasured.
