BACKGROUND Seventy-eight different types of mask have been identified by the French scholar Marcel Griaule. All of them have large geometric eyes and stylized features. Dogon masks evoke the form of animals associated with their mythology. Yet their significance is only understood by the highest ranking cult members whose role is to explain the meaning of each mask to a captivated audience. In the West, the most famous of these masks is certainly the Kanaga mask. Its stylized face is set beneath two pairs of geometric arms directed towards the sky and the earth. The crocodile mask, carved with a long jaw, is thought to protect the Dogon from the Nyagma or vital fluids which emanate from a slain crocodile. Bird masks, known as Dyodyomini, evoke the captured bird in Dogon mythology. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Sri Lankan masks could be divided in two categories– Kolam masks and Thovil and Sanni Masks. Dance-Drama masks or the Kolam theatrical masks are used in folk-plays and dramas. In the early 16 th century Europeans introduced. Sri Lanka to a form of mask dancing knows as Kolam from South India. These masks were used for theatrical purposes and usually had a king’s name to honor it. The performances of these masked dancers were mainly for the royalty and the masks were craved by the carpenters specially retained by the king. These exquisitely made and conversed masks. Vintage Chinese New Year's Dancing Dragon Ceremonial Head Piece is absolutely amazing and Fantastic. This very old head piece was made in Hong Kong and decorated with Yak or Sheep's wool and horse hair. Ornate hand painted designs. And some light wear to the paper mache but very minimal and in very good condition. The eyes are electrically housed and light up, running on a 6 volt battery. The eyes and ears are controlled by the pull cord inside. This piece has hooks on top of the head for hanging. The mask measures 21 1/2" inches tall and approximately 81" inches in circumference.
