Somewhere in the dim mists of ancient Chinese mythology. The dragon came to represent male virtues; and the female counterpart, the“dragon’s bride” came to be the phoenix bird. This theme of dragon and dragon’s bride, or phoenix bird, became an extremely popular motif during the Ming Dynasty(14th-17th century) especially in decorative arts such as porcelain vases, bowls, etc. This very large wall plaque continues this theme, with a very handsome and clear depiction of the a classic mythological ancient Chinese dragon. The dragon symbolizes the Chinese people and the people from Chinese origin considered themselves. With a certain amount of pride, descendants from the dragon" According to legend, this ancestral dragon was a creature with a deer's antlers, a camel's head, the eyes of a hare, the neck of a serpent, the teeth of a crocodile, claws of an eagle, paws like a tiger, and the ears of a buffalo. The first use of cowries, the shell of a mollusc that was widely available in the shallow waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, was in China around 1,200 B.C. Historically, many societies have used cowries as money, and even as recently as the middle of the last(20th) century, cowrie shells were still used in some parts of Africa. As such the cowrie shell was the most widely and longest used currency in history. So important a role did the cowrie play as money in ancient China that its pictograph was adopted in their written language for'money' During the Zhou Dynasty four different forms of money developed in ancient China. Aside from the traditional cowrie shells. Iron, copper, and wooden forms of money

The origins of bronze-working in China are mysterious and deeply rooted in ancient Chinese myths. Metallurgy in all its forms seemed miraculous to the ordinary man. And every object, sword or vessel, was thought to possess a spirit of its own. Those who worked with metals seemed to be wizards with supernatural powers, all the more so because the melting operation was preceded, accompanied, and followed by religious ceremonies, exorcism, and magic rites. Mario Bussagli describes the background to the production of Chinese bronzes in fascinating detail. And explains the significance of the different types of ritual vessel and the symbolism of the stylized decoration. The fine illustrations include objects from the Shang, Chou, Han and T'ang periods, and each is described fully in the accompanying notes. CONDITION: LIKE NEW. Integrity entirely intact. No significant chips or cracks. Minor surface crazing. Professionally conserved. Can be sealed upon request. DETAIL: This is a very beautiful. Intricately detailed gray clay tile from the Liao Dynasty of ancient China. These clay tiles were used to decorate the inside walls of Buddhist shrines. The depiction is somewhat reminiscent of a Hindu depiction. Of course Buddhism came to China from Hindu India, and there exist of course many parallels between the Chinese and Indian variants of Buddhism. The depiction is of eight bodhisattvas of various sizes. There is a little surface crazing and a few minute chips; but no cracks or major chips. It is constructed of very strong sintered clay produced using a very special technique often employed to produce strengthened steel. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other ceramic artwork was quite popular in Victorian Europe. Carrying Chinese porcelain from China to Europe was an industry for the seafaring mariners of the 16th. 17th, and 18th centuries. Entire fleets of sailing ships plied the trade, especially the Dutch and English. However in addition to porcelain, ancient Chinese ceramics were also extremely popular in Vi

Petite(four-cup, or two mug) hand painted“famille rose” style porcelain teapot so wonderfully characteristic of the very popular export Qing Dynasty porcelain china. The particular style was extremely popular both in England as well as the USA during the 1800’s. This is a wonderful example of this very famous produce. The glaze is entirely intact, a very colorful park setting quite characteristic of Ming and Qing Dynasty porcelain. The depiction consists of six different people(including what appears to be one child) seemingly involved in leisure activities in a setting which includes shrubs, a fence, etc. Again, a quite typical depiction of an idyllic park setting. The condition of the pot is very good. There is an old repair(we did not made the repair) to a rim chip at the top rim. You can see it in the photographs. Warring States Period. The style of pot, the intricate impressing, and the grey clay color suggest it might be of Chou origin. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. In more ancient times, more often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. Later more sophisticated techniques such as this vessel saw wood blocks used to impress the design into the vessel. If you look closely at this vessel, you can see that indeed a wood block was used to impress the same design over and over again into the wet clay. You can see in many instance where the alignment of one block was not quite square with the next, some overlapping, others with a clear boundary between the impression blocks. It is a fairly large-sized piece. The size of a very large honeydew melon. You can also see that two(non-functional) handles” were added to the vessel, likewise made from grey clay, and attached to the bowl while both were still wet. What

Especially in Europe, Mexico, Asia, New Zealand, and North Africa(including ancient Egypt) The best-known finds are from the lake dwellings of Switzerland, western France, and China. The source for Europe’s Neolithic jade remains undiscovered, but it was probably from a deposit in the Alps. Nephrite is very hard and was prized for keeping a sharp edge. In the Americas the Aztecs, Mayas, Olmecs, Toltecs, and other Pre-Columbian peoples of Mexico and Central America carved jadeite for use as ornaments, amulets, and badges of rank. Nearly all of these Meso-American jades are of various shades of green, with emerald green the most highly prized color among the Aztecs. The jade carvings range from plaques, figurines, small masks, pendants, to of course, tools and weapons. The widespread use of jade died out in Meso-America after the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Splendidly preserved traditional cobalt blue on celadon green porcelain snuff bottle so wonderfully characteristic of late Ming/early Qing Dynasty artwork. The“Celadon Green” underglaze is one of the most celebrated styles of ceramic/porcelain glaze in the history of ancient China, originating thousands of years ago. The idyllic depiction is that of a floral arrangement, a classic and traditional theme. The glaze is entirely intact, the celadon green underglaze as well as the vibrant cobalt blue, and the condition of the snuff bottle, including the porcelain stopper, is virtually perfect. There is very little of the crackling/crazing of the glaze which so oftentimes afflicts antique porcelain and ceramic finishes. There is of course a little minor wear– we’re not saying it is as when new. But this is as good as one can reasonably expect of a porcelain snuff bottle somewhere around 150 or 200 years old. It’s not perfect, but it is about as close to perfect as you will ordinarily find of an authentic 19th century porcelain snuff bottle like this, and there are no repairs. Of course realistically one would expect some blemishes after being used for several hundred years, and there are no surprises here except that there are so few blemishes. There are of course a few

Mario Bussagli describes the background to the production of Chinese bronzes in fascinating detail.
