Rare Antique Inuit Kayak Model with Wood Doll/ Greenland Eskimo - Museum Quality
Fine Inuit Eskimo Kayak Model with Doll Circa 1890- 1910 Custom Made Stand ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ SIZE: Kayak Model ~ Length- 16.75" Height- 3.5" Width- 2" Base ~ Length- 9.5" Width- 2" DESCRIPTION: Very fine antique Inuit kayak model with attached original wood and cloth doll. On a painted metal custom stand. Circa 1890- 1910. This example is of museum quality and features an elegant. Thin, and proportionate, realistically made, miniature kayak with the Inuit hunter in place. The boat is made of sealskin, sewn with sinew over a wooden frame. The hunting implements and double paddle are made of wood with bone tips. The Eskimo doll is of carved wood and wearing a realistic hand-sewn linen cloth parka. The carved features of the dolls face are extremely well-done. Giving this piece a personality and ... morelife-like quality. CONDITION: Excellent ethnographic condition as shown in the photographs. Light overall wear and several small brown spots to the clothing. Overall aged patina to the sealskin and the wood surfaces. No restoration. Please see the close-up photos for condition. Kayak models were traditionally made by the Inuit to use as teaching aids and instruction of young male hunters in the art of using a kayak during maritime hunting trips. They were made to be accurate for this reason. This fine example was purchased from an old ethnographic collection in the San Francisco area and has been in my own collection for 25 years. It has become difficult to find good examples of kayak models with doll. This piece will be double-boxed and carefully packed for safe arrival to it's new owner. PLEASE NOTE: The low opening bid. 5 INUIT TRADE UTENSILS ENGRAVED, Circa 1900
Four Inuit bone spoons. Together with a small awl blade, with engravings on each handle. Various totems, and a depiction of an Eskimo whaling expedition on the reverse of the awl. The bone for these utensils likely came from Europe as trade items. These were then worked on by Eskimos, intended for sale. They carry the full spirit of Eskimo tradition and legend, and occupy an important place in the long history of Inuit art. This is a signed inuit carved figure. It is quite primative looking in style. And appears to be carved out of green hard stone or soapstone material. It has a signature on each foot which is quite difficult to read/capure on the camera. The accurate age is unknown to us unfortunately. We obtained it in a mixed lot of items at an auction so cannot ascertain its history. We believe it to be pre 1970s. Measures 6" x 3& 1/2" Ths is in good condition but does have a chip at the back of the head which can be seen in photographs. Up for auction is an original vintage(could be older) beautiful Inuit sculpture. It is signed on the bottom with an Inuit script signature and number. It also has a worn label. I believe the bird is that of a"Loon" and it's large and HEAVY. It weighs a little over 12 pounds and measures approximately 11" x 7. When viewing the pictures of the auction item. Size: Approximately 2 ¼” x 1 ¼” Condition: In our opinion this item is in nice condition for its age. There are the natural flaws and lines that appear in bone. Standing about 4 1/4" this little figure is in reasonably good order. Minor surface rubs but certainly nothing to detract from a charming piece, I have termed this as hard stone but possibly green soapstone, I am no expert.Nice item.
