Background- Th roug hout the middle hills area of Nepal there is found the butter churn support. Known in Nepali as a"ghurra" They are also often referred to in the vernacular as"neti" Ghurra act as sort of axis for the churning rod. One end of the ghurra is tied to rope or cord. And the rope is in turn tied to a post, or some other fixed object. The churn's stick passes through the hole in the ghurra, with the churning end inserted into the butter jar. There is another churning rope tied around the churn stick in such a way that the two ends of the rope are held(one each) in the butter maker's two hands. Alternately pulling one end of the rope and then ... morethe other towards themselves causes the churning stick to twist back and forth. Churning the liquid into butter. The ghurra or neti is a common item. And was traditionally found in nearly every household in all regions of Nepal. What could be a simple wooden ring, as mechanically speaking that would be all that is required for such an implement, has evolved into a great domestic art form.

Tribal cooking pot with lid. My parents purchased this whilst teaching in Popondetta. PNG between 1970 and 1973/4. These were handmade by the villagers and then sold. The pot itself is approx 4" high and with the lid it reaches 6" It is approximately 3.5" across. It is not symmetrical and the base is not totally smooth as they would be rested on sticks within the fire rather than stand it on a base. There is no damage to it. I be lieve it to have been a family piece that was added to by each generation. Which would expl ain why some areas appear more"finished" than others. Beautifull y intricate piece comprising st rips of coloured cotton f abric q uilted to a d ark blue heavy woven backing. Each col oured strip has then been meticulously e mbroidered with complex and very brightly coloured geometric patterns. Embell ished with a pp lied seed borders to some areas as show n- perhaps indi cating the different eras of under taking. An interesting old wood mask. I have no idea of its origins, the old lady I bought it from at a garage sale said her husband got it from East Africa, but then again she said it may have been Tibet. I'm no expert! nor am I a dealer I just like old and interesting things. the wood is very light. There are traces of a black" resin" that at one time was on the front of the mask, there are splits to the wood on the front only, they do not go through, the back has dust dirty marks and staining, chip to the left side as seen. And to the right side where string has been tied. 26 cms x 12 or 10ins x 6ins appx if you can tell me where this comes from I will be delighted.
