This is one exceptional long strand of scarce and truly authentic old Venetian glass beads coming direct via African trade. It has an amazing selection of millefiori. Fancy, and chevron beads and nearly all in very good condition. The central feature bead is one large five layer chevron bead. This is a red, black, and white bead and it does have a rather large chip out of one side which is very old and since smoothed over. This flanked by two lovely a speo beads. Some of the feature bead working our way up the first half of the strand include; a nice matched pair of tabular shaped millefiori crumb beads, a large pair of millefiori cylinders(one of which is very unique) Further on, there is a matched pair of king beads, a cute little tabular bead, and unique festooned bead and a pair of zen beads. Further on, there is a large matched pair of very unique millefiori elbows and further on a pair of tabular crumb beads with another pair of a speo beads just below. Continuing on there is another pair of zen beads, a unique streaked millefiori cylinder, a cute little raised floral fancy. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ and 3 inches in size. This specimen is over 3 inches tall! It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. ~ 19th Century Tibetan Gentleman's Hat ~ A charming pillbox hat is completely inaid with cowrie shells and dark red glass beads. T urquoise chips adorn the white metal(silver) wirework medallions- a large one in the centre and 4 on the rim. ~ Cowrie Shells In Tibet ~ Being land locked and far from the ocean. Cowrie shells in Tibet are a source of prestige. ~ Dimensions ~ The hat has a height of 3.3 inches and a diameter of 8 inches(20.25cm) It weighs 630g. ~ Condition ~ The hat is in very good condition. A quick glance show that only a coupe of beads from the many thoushands are missing. All the cowrie shells are there. There is one small area of lose around a turquoise piece on the top medallion.
