This rare charm necklace is a part of History and Folk tradition in Brazil. It is said that Brazilian Slaves wore theirs as a combination of memories from the land they were so forcefully taken from and of religious images that brought them comfort. Nowadays. Pencas de balangandan are more similar to a charm necklace. Each charm tells a story or pays homage to a place, event, spiritual belief, a memento of our memories. Each element has a meaning to the wearer. Description: The charm holder has one bird seated at each side. The birds represent freedom. This is a heavy pendant. All the charms are silver/ metal. Vintage AG90 Silver Penca de Balangandan Brazilian 9 Charm Brooch 44g
The"Penca de Balangandan" is a religious object. Created by African slaves brought into Brazil. Each balangandan(charm) had a meaning of its own; each penca(pen) is a set of several charms, symbolizing good luck. Some say the penca was given by a slave master to his slave as a reward for good behavior. This penca features 9 charms. Mostly fruits. The pin i t self is about 2.5" X 1.5" One end of the pin is rive ted to act as a hinge and the other end ha s a small scr ew in it so more charms can be added. It is simply marked AG 90 on the back to denote 90% silver which i s a little less silver content than sterling(92.5% This was an estate piece and I have no i dea of the age. T his will be carefully packed to make sure it arrives safely to you. Most of the ch arms are hollow so this will be boxed to mail.

Very Fine Brazilian Penca de Balangandan 11 charms
Swank Vintage Presents Brazilian Penca de Balangandan I imagine if you are looking at this. You know better than I what this is. If you don't, a quick search will fill you in. This was one of a small collection I found in Rome. It is from Brazil I assume. But there are no markings. The metal is silver color. But again, no markings so I can't say what it is, but I am sure at the very least it is silver plate, if not sterling. Of the four in the collection. This was, in my opinion the finest. The charms are light and very intricate. grapes, gourds, pomegranate, a carved wood figa with little metal studs as nails, and a tambourine with working cymbals. The pin mount is also very well crafted. Figa Hand Charm on a Penca De Balangandan
This is a relisting to correct my first post. For sale is this p enca de balangandan. Thanks to another Ebayer who sent me information on this item. I now know what this is. This Brazilian item is to hang on a door for good luck, if I am understanding everything correctly. Some of these are smaller and can be worn as a brooch, but this is a large one. One of the significant parts of this p enca de balangandan is the large figa hand charm. This one is around 5" long. As can be seen in the pictures. All the fingernails are"painted" with brass. The other charms seem to be pots and various types of fruit and maybe vegetables. There are 9 charms on the hanger. Made of gold metal. Very often brass(possibly so in this case) this brooch is called a"penca de Balangandan" and is from Bahia, Brazil. It is typically worn by women, and displayed as a talisman in the home when not being worn. The tradition says that the two facing birds represent Africa and Brazil, and the charms added typically represent symbolic fruits, musical instruments such as drums and berimbau(mouth bow) gourd vessels or tools. The symbolic charms were given as rewards or gifts and were thought to ward off evil and now represents good luck. The origin of this pin is from the Bahia state in Brazil. These are still worn at a traditional yearly festival by the Bahians. This Penca holds a Figa charm, which is the wooden clenched good luck fist originating in Africa. It also holds various other fruit and/or vegetable charms that look like pomegranate, gourd, etc. This silver pin is more pure than sterling as is stamped on the front RA GASTENS 950 for 950 silver. We find ... moreno stamp on the charms. Very good pre-owned condition. The hinged charm holder measures approximately 2.5" long and each charm is approximately 1"1.5" long including the loop. This is a preowned RARE Antique BRAZILLIAN Penca de Balangandan Silver Pin with Symbolic Fortune Charms signed with what looks to me like RABASTENS 90? 1890? that is about 2 5/8" at widest x 2 7/8" at longest.it looks like it may have had some silver plating but not anymore(but not totally certain)I have researched other similar items and they are 900 silver.it has a hinge for opening and for putting in the charms.has 8 old charms.does not magnetize.everything about it screams old and unique.any info is welcomed.I had a nice ebayer let me know this was from Brazil.
